The thing is, EB, that he literally has no place to go because there is a moratorium on new stricp clubs in the city of Montreal. So if, actually when, Cleo's closes, he will not be able to re-open his business in another location no matter what he is willing and ableto pay in rent or spend to purchase a building. A restaurant can re-locate, a regular bar can re-locate, a grocery store can re-locate, just about any business can re-locate but a strip club cannot.

When Cleo's closes, it closes for good. And if he is trying to hold up the city for whatever he can get out of it, whatever way he has to, well good for him. No one deserves to have their business that they have owned and run for over twenty years literally stolen out from under him by the government. Especially to put up an office tower for a government corporation when it can easily build it in many other areas of the city without evicting any businesses at all.

I do not understand what is the reason for this moratorium. I did a seach in google with these key words and could not find any information that would explain it. What is the reason behind this?

I have heard about this moratorium but how is it that the 281 club was able to move after UQAM pushed it out?
Isn't the Kingdom club the old Scandale bar under another name after UQAM pushed it out also?
Is this moratorium a new regulation? Does it apply to existing clubs that simply move?

I am not sure about that. All I do know is that Kingdom and Scandale have the same owner. Kingdom was opened I think maybe in 2005 and at the same time Scandale was still open. Then maybe a year after the building where Scandale was all gone. There was a big space there. Not sure wha happened to it whether it got burned or it was demolished. I am very curious as to what happened. Maybe the next time I go to Kingdom I will ask someone there maybe someone might know something. As for the Moratorium I did find something on the Internet that it applies to Ste-Catherine St along the downtown core.

But I think this (PLANS) is the problem... the city's plans should be to improve the already LACKING services (streets, infrastrure of highways, waterworks, snow removal)...NOT to expropriate (decide) the company or person that should remain in business based on what it deems appropriate...I think that is the role of the consumer/people as a whole ....

I think this is a good law case if it ever gets there? Any lawyers?

Oui, Martineau était bien au Cléo ce vendredi. Il a aussi interviewé des artistes qui performaient lors de la soirée fétiche ainsi que des membres de la Coalition pour sauver le Cléo qui lançait un court vidéo humoristique concernant la destruction du Red Light. Ce vidéo sera bientôt sur youtube, je posterai le lien. L'émission des Francs Tireurs sera diffusée dans trois semaines.

Yes, he was at the Cleo on Friday. Cleopatras is one of the dumpiest strip clubs I have ever been to. I do realize that moving an existing business to another location is risky, but you can not stop progress.

How to defines a "dump" then? I've been to "high class" clubs I could define as dump with my definition.

• Cléopatre is an old place, in need of renovation, that's a given. Why would the owner renovates anything if he risk getting shut-down? That doesn't make the place a dump.
• Strippers range from "How can you make a single penny as a stripper?" to "How come you're not a Playboy model?" That doesn't make the place a dump.
• In the 5 years I've been going to Cléopatre, I've never seen a single fight.
• There are no gangs running the place.
• There are no drugs, at least in the public spaces.
• The staff is friendly.
• The waitresses aren't pushy.
• The strippers aren't pushy.
• The strippers are well treated by the management.
• Drinks are set in a sensible way, not to gouge customers.
• The cover charge ends at the doorman, not after the coatcheck, the doorman, the guy showing you your seat...

In my opinion, this is enough to say the place isn't a dump!

What makes a place a dump, in my eyes? It have nothing to do with the bling and the shiny decor.

• There's are fights regularly, or at least muscled discussions.
• Strippers think they are so good they can't take no for an answer without making you feel like you're a moron.
• Everything is overpriced.
• By the time you sit-down, your're already almost $10 poorer, and you don't have a drink yet.
• That drink better be consumed fast enough for the waitress's liking and an empty glass won't be tolerated.
• Dark corners are occupied by guys who don't move and don't dance any girls but have a steady flow of girls and customers visiting them.

Cléopatre is like a pair of old jeans for me. It doesn't look good anymore, it's worn-out but I know I'll always feel comfortable and have a good time, while not worrying about getting harassed by a bozo wanting to sell me blow, getting hit by a beer bottle or stuck in a random gang hit.

Any stripclub is a dump, no matter how it look like..... A place is defined by what its going on there, not by how it look. You can have gold walls with marble floor, a stripclub will always be a dump.........

... But we still like to go there for the girls!
