Can someone help with my computer???

The plug-in does not work anymore making it so the cable cannot transfer the electricity to the battery, therefore I cannot turn on my computer. The cable works fine, I tried it on another computer and it is also brand new since the other one kind-of blew up.

I went to future shop yesterday because that is all i know and i hate them! The guys kept checking out my boobs and talking to me like i was a stupid girl. Plus they were saying it would cost a awhole lot of money to fix it and that I would loose everything on my computer.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Can someone help.. I cannot even transfer my information because I can`t turn the computer on.. It is a gateway.

When I tried to plug the cable in with the batterie on, I needed to apply pressure to get a connection... which is what I was doing for about two weeks before it stopped completely. I took the batterie out and when I plugged the cable in, sparks came out. I am scared..lol

It's a laptop. Can you power it up without the battery in the laptop? If not, then it's one of two things. The power supply/charger is not working. But since you tested it on another laptop and it works then most likely the power inverter inside your laptop is broken/damaged. Since you needed to apply force to the connection, the jack for the charger might have been loose on the motherboard. The sparks indicate a short circuit.

If you can power on the laptop without the battery then the battery is defective and needs to be replaced. You can try to find another one on Ebay or if it's less than 2 years, from a store.

If the laptop is out of warranty, it would be very expensive to repair the laptop, they would probably have to replace the motherboard since the jack is soldered on. Your data would not be lost. You can remove the hard drive, put it into an external hard drive case and connect to another computer via a USB cable.

I hope this doesn't sound too technical.

Maria, I hope that the other computer you tried your power pack on is the exact same make and model of laptop. In general, most laptops need a specific power supply for each make and model. Just because the plug fits doesn't mean it won't damage your system.

The idiots at future chop, no I didn't make a typo , are actually correct. If your system sparked when you plugged it in the chances are high that you have a damaged main board in your laptop, and that will not be cheap to have repaired. Actually most shops will just replace the board as it is usually cheaper than fixing it.

You will not lose your data unless your hard disk is damaged, and even then there are ways to recover it. All you have to do is remove your hard disk and connect it to another system with an adapter made for that purpose. Any decent computer shop should be able to do the transfer for you at a minimal cost. Or if you decide to replace your computer, you could buy an external drive case for your existing drive, copy the data yourself, and you will have a portable drive that you can use to backup your new system's data in case of problems in the future.

And don't forget the first rule of owning a computer: BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP! People who don't backup their data have no one to blame but themselves when they lose it.

If your system sparked when you plugged it in the chances are high that you have a damaged main board in your laptop, and that will not be cheap to have repaired. Actually most shops will just replace the board as it is usually cheaper than fixing it.

If you've fried your motherboard, in some cases (depending how old the laptop is, etc) it might make sense to not have it replaced, rather just buy a new laptop.
As already mentioned, if your drive is not damaged (and it might not be) you can easily recover your information and any reliable computer store or Geeks like those who responded to these posts can do this.

My cable is a universal cable with different ends that I can use on any laptop, I know that is not the problem. The mother board is most probably ok as when I could charge my battery with a little pressure, everything else worked perfectly. The battery does not seem to be the problem either as it charged perfectly before even if the connection needed fondling with. Someone recommended a place to go get an estimate and if the repair of the power-inverter is not too expensive... Im willing to pay 100-200 max for it. Like others said it might be the connection with the mother board but I am suspecting that it is in the little hole that I connect into that there is a problem.

My computer was soooo perfect and yes it is old.. 3 years no more warrenty. But very performant! I had a friend change and delete all the unnecessary things on it and my computer was even faster then my friends new one. I also do not want to leave the hard drive with the tec guy who will fix it, because I do not wish to share my sexy pics with him.. Only with you!

Ill go get it checked this Monday and if all cannot be fixed for under 200 I will need to purchase a new one and will need some of your input for that. I will want to transfer all the things I have on my old computer onto this new one.. No unnecessary programs. Just the same things as I have now.

Maria...that 'little hole' is the connection to the motherboard/mainboard. If you are lucky, it could just require a little resoldering. What worries me is that you said it sparked on you. It doesn't take a lot to fry your mainboard and a sparking power connector is not a good thing.

The problem is that laptop parts tend to be on the expensive side. I have a perfectly good compaq laptop with a defective video cable that I haven't bothered to repair due to the insane cost of the cable, 125 to 195 dollars. A mainboard could easily cost 300 and up, plus the cost to install it. Hopefully it will just need a solder job.

You can buy stuff from futureshop and return it within 15 days, if you really hate them get a case as techman says use it and return it.

Futureshop deals with adison electronique to get their parts, I'm pretty sure you could find parts for your laptop over there, they could probably even change it for you.

Hi Maria

Its a common problem with age, the power plug breaks its solder joints inside the case. Usually if you push the jack in hard one way or the other you can get a temporary contact. I have had notebooks for 15 years, and the last 8 years with Dell, and I have had to fix this problem twice by opening it and resoldering the power jacks 3 connections. Most computer manufacturers like Dell have PDF's that sow you how to do this, but putting a soldering iron to the power jack can void the warranty.

Have you tried

Charging the battery outside of your computer? Someone else with a computer that uses the same battery as you do could charge the battery, then you can at least log in and backup all your data before anyone does anything else to your computer.

or sometimes the connection in the cable its self can go as well
i could fix it for u
but im in NS so.... ull probably need to find someone else
unless u wanta mail it or u happen to be in NS for a visit

shouldnt be to much to get it looked at
go to a mom and pop computer shop id say less then 50bucks
