Freedom of speech does not exist. It never really did.
And yes, it is an "american" concept but people are not really much more "free" to say what they want in the USA than they are in Iran or Saudi Arabia, or France, or Botswana, or anywhere else. The main difference is that if you say something offensive in the US, it becomes a media circus, followed by lawsuits etc... In some other countries (France for example) people will protest in the streets and the customary strikes will take place. In other countries yes (say, Iran), they just chop off your head, which is much more efficient for the taxpayers.
I've been down this road when it comes to merb, and trust me, you will find more free speech in a stalin-era soviet gulag than here. Don't try to push it. Take your bread crust and dirty water and be thankful that you are not working in a salt mine.
Beautydigger -- you say a lot of dumb things, which is why people rarely agree with you. In this case you are right though... There is no free speech here. So let it rest. You can start your own board if you want ultimate free speech. I gave up on this issue a long time ago.
I don't think you really need to worry about our Canadian "cancer" spreading to America.
A scary number of people in the US have never even heard of Canada and most of those who have can't point to it on a map even though it's MASSIVE.
If I were you, I would worry about other, more poignant things such as an economy running a 10 trillion dollar deficit with a 3 trillion dollar GDP. Free speech won;t matter much when everyone is poor and starving in 25yrs, wondering why the Chinese are living it up
