This is what he got fired for.

...when asked by anchor Katy Tur about “the environment in which a shooting like this happens,” Dowd responded with the following about Kirk: “He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.”

Looks like free speech is dead in America for anyone left leaning. He didn't celebrate Kirk's death, make jokes, call for violence, or lay the blame on one side or the other. He just provided his opinion on the situation. I'd say it's a pretty accurate analysis.
Meanwhile the right wing politicians and media are calling for war. If Fox had to follow the same rules as MSNBC, they'd have no one left to put in front of the camera. Right wing sure does love cancel culture when they're the ones doing the cancelling.
I think when you are an employee of a media company, answering live on the air it is not a free speech issue.

Msnbc needs a pundit to answer these questions in a way that please its core audience, does not scare advertisers and does not expose them to appearing more biased than they are. He fucked up, apologizing could have worked but they needed a sacrificial lamb.

There is always a context to firings. Maybe they were already done with him and looking for an excuse to replace him!

Wrong place, wrong time.

According to the article, he said this when all they knew was that a gun had been fired at the event. There was no report of injury or death. If they had waited 10 minutes before jumping on the story, things would be different. The blame should lie with the people running the show (producer? Show runner?).
