Cheapest mobile cellular plan

I don’t think this has been discussed recently, I want to get a second phone because you know why, it will be used for voice and text only. What is the bottom line cheapest option here in QC? I only hobby maybe 10 times a year, so I dont want to spend 30+ a month.

it sucks that thrre seem to be 100cad/year plans for other parts of canada, with speakout and freedom, but they do not serve qc. Wtf?!
Any alternatives?

I ported an older fido number I had to https://voip.ms/ and use on a pay as you go plan. Monthly charges are next to nothing a text message is around 0.007$.
If you use one of their #s you might be detected as using an app as they recycle numbers which are sometimes used by spammers. Not sure, but I think you can even ask for an unused number.
Last year I think it cost me something like 50-60 dollars total.

Best part, is I can use any device (smartphone, computer, tablet) when I'm travelling, it even works with my Airalo esim.

You have options. Use Google to find a virtual number or virtual phone etc... You will find something free or close to it.

Some agencies/independent don’t respond to virtual number. There is a thread on this.

My understanding is Euphoria is one such agency (unless they now accept these numbers again).

Airalo appear to be a data only plan. No mention of SMS/voice.

I might just go with public for $15/month for each trip up here. US plan already covers data so I’m good there. Just need a burner eSIM voice/SMS for Canada.

Yeah Public is the way to go. With Public mobile their $15/month plan has 100 min and unlimited texting and 250 Mb of data. Right now they have free eSim deal.

Airalo is just data. Which is why I initially mentionned it to be used with voip.ms which would be the platform that offers voice/sms for really cheap. Costs just a few dollars / month if you don't use it just to keep the number.

The reason I brought it up is because @studioso mentioned getting another phone for voice/SMS. If they were using virtual number, IMO no need for a burner as main phone is fine when you just delete the phone app when not in use.

I also had Euphoria in mind as they don't respond to virtual numbers making service with voice/SMS on a real line necessary.

Why another phone? just get the Fongo app and you can have a number for free. texting will cost you but it's very cheap.

I'm a bit more active than you are but to me, the best option I found (and I didn't look very hard) is the Fido prepaid plan @ 20$ a month.

I always have a second phone dedicated to the hobby.

Thanks @transatlantic for the ideas, what I did right now is download an app called textme on the second phone, got a 438 number, seems to work ok with ads, and its piggy backing on my main’s phone data, or wifi. I happen to have a second phone laying around so seems safer than main phone and deleting/installing app
