Many landlords will tell you they will run a credit check just to see your reaction. Don't forget that it costs money to do that, around $65 if I'm not mistaken. If they get too particular in who they rent to, they could run up a hefty bill checking people out. I did a bit of checking and while the landlord can run a credit check, they can not insist on your SIN and that should be refused. Another thing to watch for are landlords who say that you have to cover the cost of the credit check. THAT is illegal. If they want to run a check, they have to pay for it themselves.

Anyways, I wouldn't worry about a credit check unless you've had a history of running out on the rent. All landlords care about is if you've paid your rent at your previous apartments, didn't get evicted for some reason and that you didn't leave things in a shambles when you left. A landlord will much prefer that you stiff Videotron or Bell so that you can pay your rent than the other way around. And at the moment, it's pretty much a renter's market. Most every apartment building I pass has apartment for rent signs up. I really wouldn't worry about it.

One way around it is to ask the prospective tenant to request info from Eqifax themselves. You get the reaction from the tenant as well as the tenants credit info, free.
