Demographics of pro/anti prostitution?

I'm wondering if this exists. What age range/ gender/ political view/ religious view/ region support or fight against prostitution.

One would think that older/ more conservative / westerner is kinda against prostitution. But there is a difference between what a party line says, what a politician says to be politically-correct and what one thinks.

Any data also about the "don't care" group? This group is usually a majority. This is what Trudeau bet on with weed.

Anyone knows any empirical data on this?

I never see stats about demographics of pro/anti prostitution, so my opinion is pure speculation. I don't believe that there is a link with age and puritanism. I often met 20-year-old young people who were more judgemental and moralist than my grandfather.

Moreover, that brings me to another question....Is society more open about sex work in 2018 ? We evolved a lot about gender, sexual orientation, kink and BDSM, but can we say the same thing about escorts? I don't think so.

On the contrary, I have the impression that we are living a moral and legal regression. If we look at the past, in the Middle Ages, sex workers ware part of the society, and they had even official guilds. In different periods and various countries as in France of Balzac, the courtesans had good reputation.

If Montreal got it's place on an international scale, it is partially because of her famous redlight district : strippers, courtesans and jazz cabarets made the city at the 20 ème century. Moreover, it is incredible to see how the newspapers of the time were more liberal about sex work. And now, it's forbidden to post escort ad in the newspaper.

You'll be interested in reading [the link below and have a look at the 2011 poll (link in the article) in which responses are given by gender, age and province. I remember seeing one that gave responses by political affiliation. Can't find it for now. I would suggest taking a lot of precaution in interpreting the results. Prostitution is something of no interest for most people and it's something they know nothing about. Also, if you analyse the polls very closely, you'll find out that the responses vary considerably with the wording of the questions.

To a certain extent, society is more open. I'm not on Twitter but I see many escorts that openly advertise their Twitter handles and such. In the past, you'd have to be specifically looking for an escort-- which is how I found them. Now you can theoretically meet one because social media planted the idea first. Never thought I'd see that day.

I think most women in the U.S., whether conservative or liberal, are dead set against prostitution, especially when they read articles like above.

If they read articles like this, they will be forever against prostitution.

Its funny in a way. I am very conservative/rightwing in some topics (immigration, traditions) while being completely "left wing/liberals" for others like prostitution, porn and just a plain big FU to religion. Plus i am super anti guns when it comes to US laws.

Some peoples says i am a walking contradiction... but the facts are, there is nothing completely right or wrong...

There is good in everything and there is bad in everything... Ying in a Yang and Yang in a Ying, thats how i see it.

HM - I'm with you on that. Your views are quite normal. It's funny, I work with alot of very liberal women who say that a woman has the right to do with her body as she wants, except for prostitution because that is just male exploitation.

I wonder about methodology and bias when they conduct such research about abuse. Women who have been raped are likely to say it during their research because its a shame on the rapers. However women who do it willingly and consensually would not be inclined to say it since it's a shame on them.

And, as someone would say, it may also be fake news....

It's certainly not representative of the SPs I've met, although I will agree I'm not into street girls...

Journalists will write anything. The State Department never looked at nine countries, it's a 'study' by a prohibitionnist, Melissa Farley. In this 'study', that includes Canada, 100% of the canadian sampling is in Downtown East Side in Vancouver.
