Did anybody participate in this "Earth hour" thing?
For the benefit of people like me, who only heard about it within the last 24 hours, Earth hour was/is a global voluntary blackout. From (I think) 8-9 pm, people around the world turned off their lights, tv's, etc, to try and raise awareness about global warming. Cities around the world participated by turning off lights in offices, on bridges and such. Here in Canada, Ottawa turned off the lights outside Parliment and Montreal turned off the lights on the cross on Mt Royal. Wait! What about the self thought capitol of Canada! AKA Toronto. They, in their infinite wisdom, decided to have an outdoor concert, featuring Nelly Furtado. In an effort to send a message about curbing power usage, and the associated global warming, they got people to drive downtown (there's no way I'll believe that EVERYBODY there used public transit) to a show with a lighted stage, a powered sound system, and two huge TV screens. I very much doubt that they used pedal powered generators for all that stuff. I wonder just how much pollution was generated by all the cars stuck in traffic before and after the show. I also wonder just how much thought (if any) was given to the whole idea.
I know I'm going to get slammed for putting down what they tried to do. But I really don't give a rat's ass. Global warming has been proven. I am aware of the 5000+ sq mile section of the ice shelf that broke off Antarctica. I believe that mankind has probably accelerated the warming process. But I also believe that Mother Nature has ways of regulating and repairing herself. Earth hour is a great idea, more power to the organizers. Hopefully some people were listening, but not while stuck in traffic on Younge St.
