In the non hobby world, a working colleague was recently surprised that I knew so much detail about him, his kids, where he traveled during the holidays, etc... I told him I just put his phone number in the facebook search and found his profile. But then he said we are not facebook friends, and not even friends of friends. Then I ask him to go to his facebook:

Settings -> Privacy

and look for:

"Who can look you up using the phone number you provided?
This applies to people who can't already see your phone number."

And of course it was set to "Everyone", instead of "friends". Actually all his settings were set to "Everyone"!

Maybe something you fellow should check. Even if I know there is zillion way to find out someone out of a phone number, the findings are generally much less detail then you facebook profile!

Cheers,

Unfortunately many sp get in trouble by giving their phone numbers to clients without knowing about this.
Never link your phone to Fb, bucket of trouble.

Around Montréal...
There are a lots of trouble using the same personal phone number for "hobbying" for gentlemen as well as for ladies.

And if you plan to cross the borders, as well to show your faces in the ads also now with the face recognition that the border is using, even if you go only for vacationing, you can be prohibited to go for between 5 to 10 years.

Ahhhhhhhhh now this explain a bunch of things actually !!!

So this is why somebody that have your phone number can find your name even if your name does not show when you call somebody.

Thanks for this information mister.

Oh and Maria, they could really do that just in presumption you may go there to do that? Dang its serious... Sucks a bit really... I love face pics lol, i mean they make it so much easier to want to see somebody. Face is easily the most important for me. Thanksfully there is the parties lol

Girls from agencies often add each other on facebook and if you know one you know all. Aside from that, it has become quite easy to intercept cellphone communications with a small bts and open source software. It's better to just carry two different phones.

Well you know what, while exchanging some text with a sweet girl yesterday she tells me I have cute kids! WTF!

It's a good thing she tells me, and it's an even better good thing it was that girl because I trust and like her a lot. But I am fucking mad at facebook because I had blocked all that long time ago.
Facebook must have change something and changed the phone search setting back to public.

Better check your stuff, or as Clark Larson says, best is to get a second phone. This is what I will do.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Best is just to remove the number completely, I do not trust facebook at all, pretty sure the updates cancel your settings.

One other thing worth mentioning has to do about SnapChat.

SnapChat lets you create an account with a "user name" (that cannot be changed after), birthday, cell phone number, email address, etc. The phone number and email address (both, if I'm not mistaking) are verified when you create the account, so you can not put dummy information there. The thing is, many girls are entering their real name as the "user name", and leave the default option to find them by their phone number.

On SeekingArrangement (or in other situation), when you get the phone number of a girl you are about to meet, it's surprising how many times "Jennifer" (the name she gave you) was in fact "Marie-Eve", for example. One of them even had a public life, had her FULL name on SnapChat, and was frightened (but thankful) when I told her about that!

Girls, check your settings!

Very true Amadeus.

Ho one thing I found girl who have booked their own domain name, do a whois search on your domain and make sure no public info on you is available. I once found many information on a girl, she was sure glad I told her...

So an indy I had seen three years ago showed up as 'people I may know' on Facebook, and it was under her working name. I contacted her and made sure she removed all my contact info from her phone and any emails we shared. I never install social media apps on my phone and never entered my phone number on any of them, but other people on FB are friended to me and have my phone number on their phone, so FB knows my phone number regardless. It was not a big problem and I was not in any real danger, but I reacted out of an abundance of caution.

I never, never install an app on my phone when a website will do just fine. Thus I access my email, facebook...etc through the web browser on my phone and never through an app, no matter how many times I get pop-ups saying 'Hey install the app its easier to use!'. Apps have direct access to your phone in a way a webpage never can. I don't care if I configure permissions on them, I do not trust any of them especially facebook, which I have seen use very invasive methods to draw connections between people. I only install an app when absolutely necessary - (e.g. Uber needs access to your GPS and I need to use Uber so I am fine with that). And I never install 'free apps' that stream ads or collect your info, all the gaming apps I have are paid for. If you are not paying, then 'you' are the product, not the customer.

By the way, the simple fact of doing a search on someone on Facebook will tell facebook there is an interest on your part. The person you searched for will eventually appear on your suggestions, but also the other way around: YOU will appear as a suggestion on the screen of the person you searched for. Beware of what you're doing at all time!

If you are not paying, then 'you' are the product, not the customer.
Very true!

Very true!

Not positive but pretty sure that Facebook can get to your cell phone list. I have the " people you may know " and they are people from work that I only talk to for business, odd that their names come up.

If you're trying to be anonymous, a FB account is the last thing you want. I have a FB account, and have everything locked down on it and really don't care too much about who's looking at it. I just like knowing if you're going to stalk me, I'm going to make you work for it. All my "people you may know" are friends/relatives of my friends. Every once in awhile I'll get some random phishing friend request from someone I've never heard of with no profile pic. So, I guess I'm pretty boring on FB.
On sending a friend request to an SP. Unless she invited me over to meet mom and dad, I don't think I would send a request. I'd like to think I'm pretty cool with one SP and I don't think we're that cool. If she sent me a request I'd accept it.

very dangerous feature which shouldn't exist at all unless they are strictly warned.

I've found countless amounts of SPs this way out of curiosity. I usually tell them about it

but some guys are just fucking creepers/stalkers and i can see how disturbing it can be especially in this industry

I'm not a Facebook expert because I use the site seldomly but isn't this a privacy settings issue? Some time ago out of curiosity, I found on Facebook a SP lady who gave me her regular phone number. When I searched her number again not long ago as well other people that I know but have not befriended on FB, they no longer came up. I was told it was because they changed their privacy settings. I don't use the app.

Facebook is a social networking site... The whole point of it is to be able to find people you know hence why it is a social networking site. Those too concerned about privacy should not even have a social networking account. It defeats the purpose. However Facebook offers a lot of options to secure your privacy. For the phone number search you do have the choice to not enter your phone number. This is what I do so my phone number is not searchable. Facebook will ask you to enter your phone number but you can skip it. If you do enter your phone number in the privacy settings you have the option to make your number unsearchable to others.
