It was deja vu when Therrien returned for his second stint, and now Julien not only comes back for the second time, but he's replacing the same coach he replaced the first time!!! You can't make this up!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:
I wonder if any of the current assistant coaches (Muller, Daigneault, Waite, etc) will remain with the team once the season ends. My guess is that Muller and Daigneault are gone and be replaced with Julien's own people. Waite might be kept because he's Price's personal goaltender. Unless Price gets traded during the offseason, who knows.

But Julien? Wow! I understand that in Montreal the coach needs to speak french. Personally I do not agree with this as I would select the best, period, but I understand that "rule". But Galland was available no?

I'm sure the guys love Muller. Most assistant coaches are well-liked by the guys since they act as go-betweens between the players and the coaches. But Julien will probably want his own guys for his assistants. Plus i doubt Muller will stay if he can find a better fit (or job) elsewhere. As of yesterday, he realizes he's got no future in Montreal as a head coach.
As for who was the best coach available, i have no problem with Julien. The team had sought permission from Florida to speak with Gallant, but we're hearing today that Gallant was never approached by Mtl. Maybe Florida didn't grant permission. Who knows. I have no problem with insisting on a billingual coach, but the field of availabilities is considerably lowered when such conditions are absolutely required. This is one big reason why Mtl has been recycling coaches so often. By the way, this is the second time in recent years that they've re-hired a coach they once fired. Is there any other organization that has done this in the NHL?? I can't think of one. They remind me of the NY Yankees and Billy Martin.
The way the Bruins handled the firing of Claude Julien by trying to bury it behind the Patriots parade as a media distraction was disgusting, an indelible black mark on the organization. If the organization wanted to fire him they should have had the manhood to do it openly with as much respect as could be possible in such a situation. They should not have done it in mid-season either. Of course Julien is accountable for results so far but the team as constituted is a borderline playoff team as it's been for a few year, as much because of the personnel as the coach. Firing Julien so crudely now changes nothing despite the latest win streak and shutting out Montreal.
Julien now has a 5-year $25 million contract with the Canadiens who were smart to sew him up with their team.
Re-signing Radulov may be problematic
The Montreal Canadiens may have to consider a long-time deal if they want to re-sign Alexander Radulov. Currently on an expiring 1-year deal which pays him $5.75 million, he's looking to hit the jackpot once this season ends.
A long-term deal is what he's seeking and he's expecting to receive offers which will pay him at least $5 or 6 million per season. But he'll be 31 years old this summer and his age will scare teams from offering him the 5-6 year contract he'll be seeking.
Sources say that the habs may be forced to sign him to a $6 or $7 million contract if they want to sign him to a shorter deal, say 2 or 3 years. But my guess is that Radulov would prefer longer term for a bit less money.
It'll be very difficult for Marc Bergevin & the habs to re-sign Radulov since Galchenyuk is RFA at the end of this season will be seeking a big raise. Andrei Markov will be UFA an i don't think the habs have a choice but to re-sign him. And a year from now, it's Carey Price's turn to be UFA and he'll expect to be the highest-paid goalie ever. And a year later, it's Max Pacioretty's turn. Big decisions!

The NHLPA will be all over Radulov if he short-changes himself. I'm also fairly certain Radulov would be as happy playing on other teams if they paid him what he wants. You go where the money is. Were the Pewanuk Eskimos to offer him $15 million a season to go and play for them, he'd probably go. Radulov also has the option to go back and play in Europe or for Vladimir Putin in the KHL if he's not happy with the offers.

I had the impression no other team in hockey wanted to touch him so the habs were very lucky in getting him for a reasonable contract for one year. Big questions.
As for Carey Price, he certainly isn't the top goalie in the league. He's not even top 15 anymore. But they expect (and hope) he'll bounce back, ignoring he's also getting up there in years. But whether or not he's in the top half of goalies, Price knows there are many teams out there who will be salivating at signing him for top dollars and a few of them won't hesitate to make him the highest-paid goalie in history. If there's a team that once made Ilya Bryzgalov the world's top-paid goalie, then i'm sure some teams will give Carey Price the same honor, whether he really deserves to be or not.
However, his biggest value to the habs may be if he's traded during the off-season. That is indeed a strong possibility. His value to them will never be greater.

I wouldn't blame the organization if they parted with Carey Price next season if they trade him with a team that is willing to overpay for him. The habs have two good future goalies in the minors and other than die-hard habs fans who believe the habs will win the Cup ever year, i really don't think they'll contend for years to come and my guess is that Bergevin knows this. So hanging on to an aging and injury-prone Carey Price for 8 to $10 million a season wouldn't make sense.
But it's the habs were talking about, so anything's possible.

A six-year contract would also take Radulov to age 37.

Avalanche and Habs complete 7-man trade

MONTREAL----In a blockbuster deal earlier in the afternoon completed between the Colorado Avalanche and the Montreal Canadiens saw the habs sending Nathan Beaulieu, Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher and Mikhail Sergachev to the Avalanche in return for Tyson Barrie, Matt Duchesne and Gabriel Landeskog. The Avalanche also received Montreal's 2018 first-round pick in the trade. However, the pick is protected which means that should it be a lottery pick, the pick traded would be bumped to the following year as long as that pick is also not a lottery pick, and so on.
The Canadiens also announced that re-signing of veteran defenceman Andrei Markov to a one-year extension. Markov's agent told members of the media that the deal was for $5.5 million, which the team refused to confirm. It would also announced that assistant coach J-J Daigneault would not be re-signed following the completion of the season. The status of the other assistant coaches is not known, although it's been rumoured that Kirk Muller would likely be leaving the organization once the season is over in order to seek a head coaching job either in the NHL or elsewhere.
The traded players are expected to join their new teams for this weekend's upcoming games.
