I agree with you EB if such a trade is possible. Not sure the Leafs see Weber as strong enough... Remember in last Predator stanley cup final Weber did not keep up... He was good but his speed was seriously hurting. The Preds vetted on Subban but he proved to be worse.

What the leaf need is someone like drew doughty? A bit younger. Stuck in a bad team. Dont know about his contract ...

The Habs need to revisit the Shea Weber for William Nylander trade discussions, which make more sense now than ever. Those would be the principal pieces of the trade, the money and draft picks to be included would have to be negotiated.

Toronto would never make that trade. Even if Montreal would only request a roll of tape & a jock strap in return for Weber. Why? Because of his big, long-term contract. Plus they can't afford him since they're capped out. They don't even have any money to sign a back-up goalie.

Plus they'll never part with Nylander for him since Nylander is currently their best player & his contract now is starting to look like a bargain (as i always predicted). They only way i'd send Nylander to Montreal is if they'd send us their upcoming first-round pick....but i'm not even sure if i'd do it unless they'd include either Suzuki, Romanov or Primeau. Or Gallagher. I don't want Kotkaniemi.

p.s. Only an idiot GM would take on a 34 year-old's contract which ends in 2026. In his case it's not really about the money. It's the lenght.

Again....the Leafs can't afford Weber even if the habs would give him away for free. They barely have a dollar left in their cap space. Plus they don't need him. Whose spot would he take? Rieilly? Muzzin? Dermott? Barrie? Holl? Cecci? Muzzin, Barrie & Cecci will be gone after this season and even then they won't be able to afford Weber's giant contract.

Shea Weber has a cap hit of $7,857,143. His contract expires in 2026. He's 34 years old.

The Leafs have $0 left in cap space. Since Weber has a cap hit of nearly $900 000 more than Nylander's the Leafs can't afford him anyway. Plus Weber is slow and his lack of speed wouldn't be a good fit on the current Leafs team. And again.....he's 11 years Nylander's senior.

Why the fuck would the Leafs want to trade a potential elite player who still hasn't reached his prime for an old, slow player who'll soon be playing on crutches?? On top of that, grandpa's contract is two years longer than Nylander's!!! And if Weber decides to retire in 2-3 years.....HE'D STILL COUNT ON THE TEAM'S CAP UNTIL 2026!!

If there is one GM in the league who'd ever be crazy enough to make such a trade (even if he'd have cap space) he should be fired on the spot!

Detroit is the worse team in the league yet they look like Stanley Cup contenders every time they play the Habs. The Habs make them look that way. Yes, the loss may be embarassing to some. But this is the team that you have: a mediocre team. That's why if they ever want to considerably improve the only chance they have is to get good trade value for Carey Price & Shea Weber. And Brendan Gallagher. And Jonathan Drouin. And Jeff Petry. And Max Domi. And pretty much everyone else you can get something of value for. There are zero untouchables on that team. They must start from scratch.

You are assuming that the Leafs can’t unload another contract in the deal. Read my initial post. This would not be a straight up deal. Money can be figured out if the Leafs include a bad contract and they get some cheap players and draft picks in return. You aren’t trying to use any imagination. $900,000 is nothing and you just have to find another contract to unload and take back some young and cheap guys and draft picks. It’s not that hard to imagine.

I wouldn't even trade Martin Marincin for Shea Weber. I wouldn't even want him if the habs would give him to me for free and beg me to take him!

Why? Because in about two years he'll be totally ineffective since he'll be 36 years old and the law of physics says so. Teams who'd pick up Weber's big fat contract now will get blasted a couple of years from now when he'll look like a bust and will still have 4-5 years left before his big fat cap-eating contract expires.

Toronto already faced this dilemma when it came to Patrick Marleau after last season and although he only had a year left on his contract they had to get rid of him and were forced to give Carolina a first-round pick in order for the Canes to take on his contract. No teams will agree to do this for a player such as Weber who will still have several more years left to go on his contract. Same thing with Carey Price. The habs are fucked!

I got news for you: the Leafs don't have a single 'bad' contract. They got rid of Marleau's contract during the offseason. And if you're referring to Nylander his contract is worth only $6.9 million per season and is starting to look like a bargain!

As for their biggest contracts: Matthews, Marner & Tavares.....their contracts are long-term and although Matthews & Marner's contracts look big right now they'll be trailing other contracts which will be signed within the next few years and will eventually look like bargains. Similar to how McDavid's and Crosby's contracts look today.

If there's one player i may trade if i'd be forced to right now it would be Mitch Marner, which would shock many. Why? Number one: his contract. Number two: he'd bring you huge value in return and many teams would be tempted to overpay for him. Getting rid of his contract would create a lot of cap space to sign free agents and/or re-sign current players. Number three: you could likely get a team to give you one of their #1 picks in the trade. A team like Detroit which is expected to finish last may even get tempted to trade their first overall to Toronto for Marner. Toronto could then pick Alexis Lafrenierre with the first overall pick in the upcoming 2020 draft.

First of all Shea Weber is old, he's slow, he's very average defensively and the only thing he would bring is his big shot on the powerplay. But he misses the net 75% of the time when he shoots plus the Leafs don't get many powerplays as compared to most teams. On top of that the Leafs are #1 in powerplay goals since Sheldon Keefe became head coach. So in other words they don't need whatever Weber would bring since they're already tops in the league in that department.

And lastly i don't care if Dubas has testicles or not but i do care if he has brains. And if he has (and he does) he won't throw away the team's future by signing an old 34-year one dimensional defenceman with only 1-2 years left of productive hockey with an expensive contract that ends 7 years from now. The organization learned its lesson by signing Patrick Marleau for one year too many and ended up losing a first-round pick because of it and they won't make the same mistake again. They'll likely lose up to 3 defencemen to free agency during the offseason but the Leafs have the debt to fill at least two of those departing positions. But they chose to add 1 free agent defenceman.

Price & Weber

The time to sell these two aging assets is NOW. Price's value is on the decline but it will never be bigger as it currently is. Weber is having his best season as a hab and his value will never get bigger than it is. Price is 32 and Weber is 34. Their big fat contracts expire only 7 years from now. Their contracts are literally killing the habs' salary cap. Money which could be used to help the team in many other positions where they need help. Money which could be used to lure a top centreman.

But if he does decide to get rid of those two 'assets' in order to start rebuilding the franchise then he'll be in for a big surprise if he expects to get a gold mine in return. Sure Price is now an average goalie and Weber is 34 years old. But that's not the big reason why the expected return for any of those two star players won't be as much as he'd like: It's because of the number of years remaining on those two big contracts: 7 years. Wow! That's way too much to pay a steep price just to obtain two players in their 30's with their best years behind them and counting!

As for Weber he is not as bad as you say Doc. And he is one of (if not the) most respected player in the league. He could really help the Leafs win it all this year and next, or at least be a real contender... Still being the Leafs I would target Pietroangelo in Los Angeles in priority.

Weber could be the missing piece for the Leafs that will put them over the top. What Dubas has to ask himself is whether he is really confident in the playoffs with the defensemen corps he has now, or whether it’s lacking and would be enriched by acquiring Weber. Is it an upgrade to the team? I think so.

Our only hope is that when Seattle makes it's intra league draft Price is the best option. After all he would almost be home over there.
