US border patrol always hassles me at the boarder for my one day trips from NYC no matter what I tell them like casino, skiing and etc. My last trip was over an hour of detention while they search my car. Would it help if I just told them I was there to hobby? How long can they really hold you?

Last time for me last year they seach in my car for at least 3hours.they can holdyou i think for long if you don't cooperate with the agent border.

Funny thing, flying in as I did for GG3 there was no hassle and I only stayed 2 nights. In fact I have never been hassled the numerous times I have flown into Montreal. Driving over is another story. In November I drove up from Connecticut for 1-night I got the 9th degree. On the return trip, I told them I went over for dinner and the US guy wasn't buying it. I said I went to some clubs and that was more plausible. He still searched my car. So be prepared. Say your going to Cleopatra's. I have never been in Cleopatra but when I am driving there without a business purpose I will say this. Come to think of it, even with a business purpose I should probably say Cleopatra's. I was stopped at the border and I had to produce a letter and phone numbers and then I was told to pull over and I had to sit inside for 45 minutes etc. etc.

Why does US border patrol stop you on the way in to Canada? Isn't it just the Canadian border crossing? I guess you mean on the return trip back in to the states.
The reason is that you spent 6 hours driving up and 6 hours driving back to stay what 24 hours.
Your short stay fits the profile that you're either bringing drugs back and bringing cash up.
Stay a few days longer or just fly direct out of Newark on Sat and return on Monday on one of United's specials.

Flying isn't foolproof either; when I flew to Vegas last month I was detained for an hour on my way down, even with a Nexus (trusted traveler) card. Their biggest concern seemed to be whether I would be working when I was there; maybe because I'm there so often.
It is much better now than it used to be for women traveling alone, years ago I used to get stopped all the time.

I drive up often, but I stay for at least 2-3 days. Every now and again I'll be asked to pull over and get checked out a little further. But, it's no longer than a half hour and my car has never been searched going to Canada. Coming back the US border agents will pretty much always ask you to pop the trunk and they briefly look through your stuff. US agents are more extensive about asking what you were up to, but your usually on your way in a few minutes. A one day trip will always be scrutinized, your driving 6+ hours each way to spend 24 hours in Montreal. It makes sense to me, especially a few years ago when the talent was so much better. When Eleganza had an all star line up and the option to pre book a week in advance my buddies and I would drive up on Friday and come back on Sunday regularly. Now it's mostly retreads, the same old girls simply going from agency to agency. Sorry, back to the topic.
EB is correct, if you don't have a reasonable excuse for coming up for just one day you will be hassled.
CWipes has the right idea, when possible book a flight out of Newark airport when United has their specials for around $180 round trip. I've done this numerous times and when asked by the border agents about only staying for a day or two I just let them know the trip was really cheap so I figured I would come up.
And do think about what you pack...

Anyway they brought out his suitcase and the agent was looking through it. She asked him "is everything in here yours?". He said it was, and she responded "looks like you have more than a car fetish". I couldn't help but laugh out loud!

It was coming back in I was stopped and search on that trip by some dick at the border. He didn't like the statement I came over for dinner. Coming to see strippers was more plausible.
Also, driving over for business I have had the longest delays.
Canadian side is less hassles. I only got ask inside once to count how much cash I was bring in with no car search but the US side is worse. The US side seems to harp on monetary instruments including checks, stocks, bonds and gold. They had me read the law about carrying $10,000 is legal but must be declared or face forfeiting it. They then had me fill out the declaration. I forget I had collected some rent checks from my tenants in New York that amount to near $10,000 that I brought with me. They took those checks and my cell phone for the hour of detention.
Once on another trip they were harping on drugs. They started by said that their dogs smell drugs in the car so to save them the trouble of a continued search that I should just confess. Three of them started to yell at me that their dogs are never wrong and that it would be easier on me to confess. I tell them it is impossible because I do not use drugs and the car is never lent out to anyone. They then replied that some one had drugs in there at some point in time but I am free to go. What pricks!

Basically the bottom line on the original poster's question is there is no way around questions about one night visits if you are driving from distance unless you have a family or friend who lives in the area and are visiting them. Fortunately I do. On the USA side I was even once questioned about who they were, where they lived, what they did for a living, the nature of their relationship to me, etc. I offered the customs agent my cellphone and invited him to call them, but this was declined. I don't visit them on every single trip to Montreal, but it is a convenient built in excuse.
I think admitting to visiting strip clubs or indulging other adult entertainment is dangerous as it will invite further questions and lead to suspicion that you are a money launderer. It will also invite intense questioning on the amount of money you are carrying with you.

I am a dual citizen....I get more hassles from Canadian customs than US. I was detained by Cdn customs twice. One time, I was held for more than 1-h. The agent searched my luggage. He turned everything upside down. Looked at my cellphone, laptop. I used to live in Mtl. What's wrong in coming back to visit (SPs)?
