One thing that freaks them out is road trips.

Once I hopped across the border at Cornwall for gas, taco bell and probably lotto tickets. I figure it was a nice day WTF and came back on the next crossing down. Nice drive. Explained it to the chick at the booth and it confused her. No search of anything.

Another time driving to the GTA. I figured I'd hope over and drive on the New York side for a change of scenery and cross back on the last crossing before Lake Ontario. Chick also seemed confused that I just didn't take the 401. Asked a lot and I mean a lot of questions. Was quite friendly actually. Also cute. If I were not a fugly chud who was completely out of her league I'd almost think she was interested in me.

I donno. I like to drive and I like to take different routes.

:lol:You were in Maine, the border guard was confused because you had a lobster in your crotch. You usually have crabs.

Produce what kind of letter? If you don't mind. I don't understand.

A letter of invitation from the customer. I didn't have a letter but I did have names and addresses in Montreal of the Institute I was calling on. I had a business purpose. I tried to explain. The border guard was a rather stupid woman I remember. She kept asking me what or how I was going to do business. I kept saying that I was going to explain the correct safe manner in which my product can be used. She got frustrated and said "So when the meeting starts what are you going to say..."

I got hassled less when I said I was going over to see strippers.

I am tempted to say (to the USA guards) "I am a citizen of this Country. I am telling you now that no laws were broken or transgressed during my visit. Since I wasn't breaking any US or Canadian laws it is none of your God Damned business what I was doing over there. Stay out of my personal affairs as I pursue happiness in Montreal."

A bunch of fucking dicks.

I have done the border crossing so many times that I learned to use some basic common sense rules:

1. Answer questions directly, but as vaguely as possible. For example: the question "What is the purpose of your visit?" should be answered, "weekend vacation." It's a direct answer, but vague and provides no info. My experience is that when you give question begging answers, they don't follow up and eventually you wear them out. If they follow up with a question like, "any particular plans?", I zap him with another question begging answer: "as soon as I check into the hotel I am going straight to the concierge and together we will make some plans." If you keep responding to questions with question begging answers you will wear the fuckers out and they will stop.

2. When they ask occupation questions, hit them quick and hard with detail. When this question comes up, I always get asked what kind of attorney I am. I hammer this fucking question with two sentences full of big legal words that the fuckers do not understand. 20 seconds later I see that glazed look of incomprehension and when I see that look, I know I have won and the questions are coming to an end.

3. Keep a polite, and humorous demeanor. This is a little easier on the US side, for language and cultural reasons. Chercherfemmes and I are both Americans so we will always talk about something we got away from that we were happy to get away from. If you can make the border guard laugh you throw him off his game.

4. On the way back, focus on one part of the trip that is not hobby related. The US border guards always want to know what I did during the weekend. On one trip back, I told the US border guard I went to the hockey game when I actually had only watched it on TV. I could tell the guard knew a bit about hockey, maybe not on the level of Joel Cairo, but on a high enough level where I had to throw out some stuff like "did you see when Parros dropped his gloves and the other goon pussied out", or some other detail from the game which will get him focused on one thing and again totally throw him off his game. As soon as he starts talking about the play I brought up, I have won, again.

5. If detained by Customs, do not panic. It happened once a long time ago and the Canadian customs agent kept asking me - I think he asked me 5 times- if I had a DUI. I kept telling him no. Then he said to me, in a grave voice, "I am going to run your passport in the computer and I hope you are telling me the truth because if you are not, you are going to be in trouble here!!!!!!!!" At this point I got pissed because I had been telling the truth about no DUIs, so I told a little fib. I whipped out my business card which IDs me as an attorney and told him if I had a DUI my license to practice law would have been suspended. This is not totally true - if I had a DUI conviction I could be presented for a suspension, but it's not automatic. After this the fucker calmed down with the condescension and intimidation.

6. Screen your travelling companions carefully. When I came to Canada for GG2 with a buddy I will call Phil (not his real name), Phil's friend, whom I will call Victor, was originally going to come with us. Victor told us he had a DUI so Phil and I told him he had to pay the Canadian consulate $300 for a DUI waiver or drive up in his own vehicle in case he got detained, because we were not going to get turned back because of him. We did not want to flat out reject him, so we gave him the choice between these two unsavory options. He said no to both choices, and stayed home. It's called paying for the consequences of one's actions. It's too bad but there was no way Phil and I should have our trip fucked up by Victor's screw up in the past which we had nothing to do with.

I wouldn't bother with the small talk and jokes. It basically goes like this, they want to know exactly you are doing so give them super detailed answers and they will shut up. Often they think they are smart asses and try to catch you in a lie. Once they realize how stupid they are for asking a question more than once they tend to shut up. For example - where are you going?? I am going to new york to do this this and this. That shuts down his next question which would have been, "whats going on down there?" Another classic one is "while do you have a rental car" answer - because I don't own a car. That makes them feel pretty dumb. Never have too many problems even when they search your car its usually a random message that pops up on the screen. My buddy who works at Canadian customs told me how it works. And agreed never lie cause then you get flagged if they catch you and you will have problems every time you cross no matter which side.

The last five trip I made I flew three times and I drove over twice. Each time I drove over I ran into an asshole. I used to also fly into Montreal 4 or 5 times a year and drive from there to NB, and Maine. I got detained almost every time driving over to Maine or driving back to NB. Every time!!!!!! I asked "why" the last time when I was training my Canadian replacement who had a Nexus pass and was detained with me. The answer? "This is a small border crossing and we know almost everyone who crosses here." There is no doubt in my mind that flying in is easier than driving.

so "I went clubbing" is what I told the last asshole in upstate NY on the US side. When I said I was over for dinner he didn't like that. So I didn't say strippers but I went clubbing. He said "Oh" and pop the trunk. I think clubbing is like saying "I went to the Canadian ballet" code for strippers. But yes upon further probing I am tempted to say I have a right to travel and eat dinner in Canada or something like this. However, I had a plane to catch in Connecticut.

Hassled at Border

Once you get flagged, you get hassled all the time. Get use to it.

Funny experience many years ago. In to Canada about 11 A.M. and back to the U.S. Border about 7 after a lunch and fun date with an escort. Two agents in the booth, one young (training?) and one older standing behind him. Young guy went up one side of me and down the other but I never told him any lies. Finally, I said, "Officer, would it make my trip more understandable if I told you there was a young, very pretty woman involved?" I thought the older agent was going to break out laughing but he controlled himself, put a hand on the younger man's shoulder and said something like, "He's OK."

I have never lied or been evasive to any agent (Can. or U.S.) at the border. These guys can smell a bogus story from ten yards away, and it has been my experience that they appreciate honesty. They know full well that escorting is legal in Canada, and as far as I know a U.S. citizen breaks no law by crossing into Canada, having sex with an escort and returning. IF anyone knows of, and can accurately cite, law to the contrary, I am sure we would all like to know about it.

BTW, in my opinion any guy knowingly doing minors deserves whatever he gets.

And now, I am older than dirt and too feeble to do a one day round trip, so I always stay overnight. It is so much more relaxing.

Best to all,

Cornpone

If you let the rare jerk of a Border guy get on a power trip, he will just be more of a jerk. Do not run from someone who likes to chase.

Very well said, border agents will try to push your buttons. If you come back with even a little bit of an attitude or sarcasm you will be doing exactly what they want you to do. I was once asked by a border agent if I had ever been arrested or gone before a judge. I answered no, other than maybe a traffic ticket. He continued to ask the same exact question (mixed in with other questions) 5 times. Instead of saying what I wanted to say and get pissed off I simply kept my cool and gave the same answer 5 times. Eventually I was let into Canada, but it was very stressful indeed. Thank goodness LePenthouse was about an hour away from the border so I could "let off some steam".

. I was once asked by a border agent if I had ever been arrested or gone before a judge.
I had someone badger me about that. Asked me varients of the questions. I know I haven't been arrested or in trouble with the law but as to everything else he didn't seem to like it when I didn't answer with certainty. However I have gone before a judge [jury duty] and I have been to prison [CFB North Bay, a family relation arranged a tour which included the base jail] and I didn't want to unknowningly tell a lie.

OTOH my father was actually allowed into the US without a passport. When to the border, realized he didn't have his passport and instead of being a bitch about he right up told the guy that he had to go back home to get his passport and buddy let him through. He is white, really old, had a history of crossings, modest car in good condition. Combine that with taking responsibility for fucking up rather than making a stink or asking for exemption I guess they figured why not. He told me that the guy on the Canadian side was gobsmacked that he was let through.

Sorry EB, this has probably been asked somewhere else:

"Yep.I go there to meet escorts in a country where it's legal".

Any law in the US that forbids to hobby outside your country?

Please do not mention hobbying or escorts or anything like that - legal or not. One must not raise the profile of these things. Its drawing far too much attention already, thanks to the misguided challenge to the prostitution laws in the courts leading to them being thrown out and laid at the door step of a conservative government for reformulation.

Some folks just do not get it that other than the legal issues there is also a political aspect to this.
We had a good thing going here under the radar and now all that is in shambles. The last thing we need is the State Department weighing in.

Also escorting is strictly not legal the way it is carried out.
... discretion please everybody ...

This is going back a little over 25 years ago... My brother & cousin both went to SUNY Buffalo at the same time. After one of their numerous trips across the border to a strip club in Niagara Falls called The Sundowner, the American border guard asked everyone in the car their nationality. The replies came back: "American", "American", "American", "American", "Canadian". "A Canadian!" the border guard said. "What the hell are you guys doing with him?"

Unless you have a criminal record preventing you from passing a background check (or have objections against it), just get NEXUS. Shorter waits at land crossings and airports.

I was once asked by a border agent if I had ever been arrested or gone before a judge.

That is a VERY routine question if you are asked to go inside the border crossing office for the "extended" immigration check.

Sometimes that question is asked specifically about DUI/OUI (Driving Under the Influence). If you say YES to that question, have a lovely weekend back at HOME. Entry into Canada will be DENIED. Convicted, Charges Dropped. It does not matter.

Last time the question was asked like this:

AGENT: Have you ever been inside for this check before
ME: Yes
AGENT: Then you know what question I'm going to ask.
ME: No, not really. Should I?
AGENT: Have you ever been to arrested or before a judge for OUI?
ME: No
AGENT: Have a nice day!

This has been posted on another thread about Border Crossings

100% correct.

I was in Montreal recently and made the mistake of leaving Montreal late on a Saturday morning. I had a hassle, in the form of a 1 hour wait at the Highgate Springs, Vermont border crossing. The line extended about 1/4 mile past the duty free shop. It was mostly cars with Quebec license plates so I figured it was a bunch of locals going shopping in Burlington.

I think when Chercherfemmes and I come back in July we will attempt to cross at one of the smaller border crossings between the one at Highgate Springs and the one at I-87.

Just to be clear, this was asked at the drive up window, not during an "extended" immigration check.
