Many people have consumed alcohol for decades without problem, too... Can you simply ask an alcoholic to stop? Some people are genetically predisposed to addiction. These vulnerabilities interact with environmental factors (e.g. adverse childhood experiences) to increase the risk of developing an addiction in a given individual. This probably includes behavioral addictions, such as sex addiction.
There is addiction to everything. Too much of a seemingly good stuff can be also an addiction and harmful. The same with hobbing. It can be even helpful to your health if in moderation.

That's literally what we're saying. Not everyone approaches this in an unhealthy way, but many are and some don't realize it.

The word "addiction" is pretty clear to everyone, but because scientists/doctors like to argue about words and classification, it is also somewhat controversial. For instance, the DSM-V speaks of "substance use disorder" or "alcohol use disorder", not "addiction".

When it comes to sex addiction, while it is not officially recognized in the DSM-V there is abundant scientific research, from studies of clinical populations to brain scans, on this topic. For instance, the International Classification of Diseases (from the WHO) has an entry for "Compulsive sexual behavior disorder". Here is the definition (read carefully):

What has happened in recent years is that the internet, smartphones, social media and various apps have boosted, by their very nature, the addictive potential of many behaviours. That's why we end up with so many people glued to their phones. There are now clinically recognized addictions regarding social media , online gambling and online shopping, to name a few. This has, obviously, wide-ranging impacts on society and human relations, which I have discussed elsewhere.
I have to agree that smartphones have exacerbated a problem that was damn near unheard of ca. 15-20 years ago. The phone's omnipresence coupled with the instantaneous nature of streaming sites to be specific. I honestly think that it used to be much better when we used p2p networks like Kazaa/BitTorrent and file hosing sites like Megaupload to get our bootlegged porno (back then, it was pirated/bootlegged, streaming sites like Orange Youtube made it "free" as studios now profiteer from views) and we'd have to wait patiently for the file to finish downloading. It was like sitting down at the restaurant, waiting for the cook to prepare your meal and then eating it. Now it's an all-you-can-eat buffet with 0$ cover charge. That just invites binging. One of the factors that fuels my disdain for smartphones in general as a snobby, lifelong computer nerd.

Ill just put my most recent experience on this, as you can see from my account, ive had it a while but never really posted.

Bottom line, last year i wanted to see SP's but i didn't feel good about myself so i started working on it, yet while seeing SP's, i just coudln't perform in bed, so i did the whole thing, work on myself, loose weight, get checked medically and yet there is one thing i never looked and it was my porn usage. Ive come to realise that watching porn and beating my meat for the past 20 years have wired my brain to only be excited by that. it was a daily usage and sometime more than once per day but it changed me... Now im in for the fight of my life to change that habit along everything else so that i can maybe be normal again? Idk it's kind of difficult to come to that conclusion that i might never have a normal sex life.

It's happened to me more frequently as of late and I've figured out that it's mostly a blood circulation issue. I used to be self-conscious about my stamina, how long I last in bed so got to doing kegels every day and my stamina improved noticeably. But then I noticed that I have no trouble getting hard but it takes longer than usual to regain a boner once initially lost i.e. after I spend a lot of time on foreplay (I love to eat). Which wouldn't be a big issue if I had more than one hour at my disposal but clock's a-tickin'. So after reading up, I realized that I eat very little in the way of fruits and vegetables so my circulation isn't tip-top. What I now do is eat a bar of dark chocolate the day of and my performance shows a marked improvement. You should look into similar foods that boost the circulation, I wish you the best of luck.

Of course, a daily porno habit doesn't help things. Try to limit how often a week you set time aside for a sesh. I'm not advocating drastic, excessive approaches like NoFap (that's for serious addicts), what might be up your alley is something closer to LimitedFap.

Strategy to help quit the hobby

Much like one can ask Loto-Quebec to be banned from their establishments in case of problematic gambling (https://bienjouer.lotoquebec.com/en/self-exclusion) one could ask agencies to ban one's phone number. Not sure if anyone's ever done it.
Another strategy is to get off Merb entirely and save the money you would have spent on SP to book yourself a nice vacation in a warm location for a week this winter.

That may not work... You easily get the impulse to book especially on vacation.

I guess I don't understand. I was going to type something, but I decided against it.

Maybe save the money and donate it to somebody you know who needs it, or to an organization that helps underprivileged people.

Or buy your mom, your wife or your kids a really nice present.

Still, get off Merb.

What can change the nature of a man?
Not all men see sex workers.

I recently asked a lot of my guy friends and some of my ex boyfriends if they had hired an escort before. Some of them said they considered it but never did. Some of them said they tried once and didn't like it, often pressured by other friends. Most of them said no.

Only one person I know mentioned that during a phase of his life he saw masseuses and a few escorts because he was lonely but it's not something he still does.

It's not in anybody's nature to "need" sex workers.

I'd much rather see clients who view booking me as a fun and pleasant moment with somebody they appreciate, rather than people who feel like they "have to do this", or are jaded and continuing to see escorts despite often having very negative feelings about us overall.

"What can change the nature of a man?" is reference from an old (1999) role-playing video game Planescape: Torment. one of the best ever; although with "text walls" that were not easy unless you were a hardcore fan, kind of think about a predecessor of "Disco Elysium"

It was the central philosophical question explored by the game and the ultimate answer provided by the protagonist,, is belief:
whatever you truly believe can change a man's nature, does.
my personal choice was "regret" ... you had to pick yours, from a list of like 15, but it didn't matter which you pick gamewise

So if the OP sincerely believe he can quit. then he definitively can

As per myself: I need sex at least 2 or 3 times a month, and I am kind of a loner, so sex work fits perfectly. I know that if sometime I fall in love, I will quit and become a one-woman-only man, I tend to hope I will
