The European computer model has Sandy hitting Delaware but the US Model is predicting a direct hit on Connecticut which took a direct hit from Hurricane Irene last summer!!!! I live in coastal Connecticut where this storm has dominated the news today. There will be long lines in stores tomorrow with people buying batteries and flashlights. If we lose power we will look to Canada for help with the power grid.

If we are on the eastern fringe of the storm, as we were with Hurricane Irene, it's very bad news. The winds in these storms move in a counter clockwise direction meaning a lot of water will be coming in from the Atlantic Ocean into Long Island Sound and whipped into the storm surge. We have a high tide on Monday night, and a full moon as well, which means that the storm surge on the coast could be tremendous.

The model you have cited is the so called European model that accurately tracked the movements of Irene. The US model has Sandy making a more direct hit on CT. Either way, we will not be unscathed.

Right here, except when I'm elsewhere.
Last year about this time, I drove back from warm, sunny Montreal to several feet of fresh snow at home.

This trip, I made sure I had on my snow tires. I really didn't think to bring flotation devices...

If these weather things keep happening at the end of my trips, my wife is going to demand I stop making them.

Or not. People might want to be around in case of major flood/storm damage to their homes or residences. I'd be worried for my loved ones staying behind.

It might also be more difficult to head back home once the storm has passed through due to the considerable damage expected to happen.

I was in Montreal the night Hurricane Irene hit the New England area. I couldn't believe the high winds we wound up having that same night. Unbelievable!! I had never experienced anything of such in my entire life! And that was just in Montreal! Needless to say, traffic was dead & not many people dared to venture out that night. I did try to walk to the next block to buy some refreshments at a convenience store. However, about five seconds after i walked out of my hotel, a gust of wind literally swept me off my feet & i fell on my ass! And considering i weighed 230 lbs at the time, this was no easy feat! :eek:

I am planning to stay at my condo. Last year with Hurricane Irene, my entire complex was ordered evacuated and I fled inland to stay with relatives. A few of my neighbors defied the evacuation order and the water level only got to the treeline of our property. I figure that is as high as it will go. It would still need to crest another few feet beyond the Irene storm surge to reach the bottom of my back deck. This is because our condos sit on slightly elevated ground, overlooking the water from a small hill.

I want to be here if things get nasty and I need to protect my property or help my neighbors. So I am staying and not leaving, just like Davy Crockett did at the Alamo.

Connecticut Governor Malloy declared a state of emergency as of 2 pm in Connecticut.

Just got back from the store. Bought back-up flashlight batteries and plenty of electrolyte beverages and water.

I have my gas grill to cook food up if we lose power. But I intend to eat the perishables this weekend. I stocked up on some peanut butter and apples in case we lose power for 10 days, in which case that is what I will be eating.

I tested my portable radio and it works fine.

I am here for the duration. We will take the first hit as the storm attempts to penetrate New England and then Canada.

This is the second Halloween weekend in a row that gets fucked

Last year, we had the snowstorm that killed us, due to all the leaves still on the trees

Hundreds of cars damaged by falling branches

Now this ?

I better get used to the helicopter noise above me, like last year

What is dangerous about living in NYC if this storm hits there is that there are a zillion objects that can become projectiles in the wind, like metal garbage cans. Can you imagine a garbage can picked up in 75 mph winds and hurled right at you?

Where I live in Connecticut, the problem is trees and tree limbs. The trees can fall on your home, or the limbs, once they break off, can become missiles sent through the windows like javelins. It's the falling trees that will cause the power outages.

Latest storm tracker has the storm moving north-northeast towards New England but it's expected to take a left hand turn into the Jersey shore:

Winds are gusting 40 mph plus right now on the Connecticut coast. It's just going to get worse from now until 7 p.m. when things should hit their peak for us.

The Gazette is reporting that it's all just going to graze Montreal. Pretty much the same for the NW corner of Vermont. We're expecting at worst what you're getting now, Beav. Hang tight.

The storm is blowing full steam into New Jersey at the present time. I wonder who blows the most: Sandy or NJ Governor Chris Christy? :D
