Centre Videotron (400,000,000 $ --were supposed to recoup the invesment--right)----financial boondogle
New Expos Stadium ( how many billions you want to bet its going to be a)----------------financial boondogle
Formula 1 Montrel Grand Prix ( 20 million a year tll 2030 )------------------------------------------financial boondogle

The stadium will generate LOTS of revenue for the government. Players' salaries taxed, GST & PST on construction material. Businesses nearby revenue will spike therefore more taxes to be collected. Not to mention tourism. Let's not look at it as just public money being spent with nothing in return. Government spends a lot with nothing being returned let's face it.

Lots of revenue streams would be created for the government. But the team has to be supported by the fans and last. If so the public monies used to build the Stadium will be paid back over time. I think the key has always been the location of the Stadium. If you can shoehorn it downtown somewhere, and dome it for cold and bad weather, it will work. Watch the movie "Field Of Dreams". "If you build it, they will come." And that was in the middle of a cornfield in Iowa. And the Yankees and White Sox will play an MLB game there this year. Because they built it and the fans came, even after the movie. So it can work even with a crazy location but works even better with a downtown location.

Arrr... greedy government, dreaming of collecting taxes from the poor ! why man are so greedy huh ? all it takes is: in 5-10 years for another virus to spread again, and wipe off people from the earth ! you see downtown Montreal now? it's a ghost town ! stupid ! just open your eyes and see... better built a virtual stadium instead ! :D

That is on par with baseball for excitement.
I dread the days I was forced to play that ridiculous game in school.
5 days for a test match no wonder all Aussis take a cooler of beer to the game.

Besides baseball already failed once in Montreal, I really don‘t think there are enough die hard baseball fans to support a major league team here.

Look behind you.
^^^^^ They had to move football games to McGill to make it look like the stands were kind of full, in the big O it looked like no one was there.

I'm with Ocean . If Bronfman and Coderre want a baseball stadium let them and their billionaire pals pay for it and the associated infrastructure to support it . Montreal with it's third world roads , sewers , crappy public transport ,etc. needs to spend it's money on essential services , not another vanity project . We already have third rate football ,and soccer teams and a hockey team that's not won any thing in twenty five years. We had a baseball team once , which very few people supported . Perhaps we should try an electric Grand Prix ??
By the way " Field of Dreams" was a MOVIE , the real world is littered with expensive projects which were built with taxpayer's money and no one came . Remember the Olympic stadium and Mirabel airport .?

Yes it was a movie, but it is and was a real baseball field in the real world, people did come even though it's in an Iowa cornfield, and now MLB built a temporary stadium next to it and is even playing games there. Has anyone here been able to secure tickets to the 8/12/21 game?

Was there any tax payer's money involved in the finance for the "Field of Dreams " stadium "" ??If it was all paid for by private funding I 'd welcome the sponsors to Montreal to dream again.
Quebec has no history of successful " build it and they will come projects " Remember Bombardier, our technology giant , funded by our taxes ; they gave us ; a world beating jet , which was given to Airbus , the high tech cement plant in Gaspe which was meant to revolutionise the construction world

There is considerable doubt about whether sports stadiums are a net benefit for the economies of the cities in which they are constructed. My opinion is that while there may be some tourists who come only to watch a baseball game who would not have visited otherwise and thus bring new money to a city, the locals would, for the most part, not increase their entertainment budget, but simply spend their discretionary income elsewhere in the city if the stadium didn't exist.

Here is an analysis from an economist:

In a story published on ESPN today, MLB is said to be pressuring the Athletics to relocate from Oakland. Although Las Vegas is said to be the favorite relocation destination, Montreal was named among a group of North American cities for a possible relocation:
So there is a HUGE difference between getting an expansion team and getting an existing franchise that is actually a pretty good team and can perhaps assist in funding the move and the new stadium.

If the franchise relocated to Montreal they would not need to be renamed. They would simply become the Montreal Athletics, as they were in Oakland, Kansas City and Philadelphia. It's sad that such a proud organization has shuffled through 4 cities in the past 75 years, but hopefully they find a permanent home in the next place. The team has won 4 World Series championships, all while in Oakland. The early 70s As won 3 straight World Series, behind a somewhat legendary pitching staff which had very very good starting and relief pitching, and an offense wrapped around Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.
