This all started from the 1947 independence of India when the British partitioned India and created Pakistan. The Muslims went to Pakistan and the Hindus to India. But the Sikhs were against, they wanted Punjab to be separated to form Khalistan but it was no possible because Punjab lies in both Pakistan and India. They were in essence against the partition of Punjab. Either way it is a separatist movement and India denied them this. Punjab had its borders redivided.
