We're not clean or dirty. Do you mean, how do we alleviate the risk of an STI? We get tested frequently and insist that our clients get tested regularly too, among other things.

"People socialized as female who know they have STIs are accustomed to society's view of us as “dirty,” but this metaphor--of being “clean”-- for disease refers to morality, not to infection. " Medicine doesn’t deal in “clean” or “dirty;” rather, doctors and scientists speak of infection and contagion, and the former terms are not intrinsically related to the latter terms. The link between STIs and “unclean” comes from the association with this type of infection with sexual activity."

I keep myself clean by taking showers daily.

If you meant "avoid STI" then that's a different thing and I avoid those by using protection, taking a (discreet) look at my clients genitals before putting them in my mouth, getting tested every 1-3 months and enforcing boundaries.

Nothing is 100% foolproof but I've been an escort for close to a decade and haven't caught an STI.

That goes to show how well condoms works at preventing STI! When I started seeing escorts about 7 years ago, I was sexually inexperienced and very anxious about getting an STI. I was researching them online for hours and even made several calls to a free STI info line (in Toronto) for reassurance. Seven years later, with consistent and careful condom use, I have always tested negative. That doesn't mean I won't ever catch an STI, or that it would be shameful to get one, but it shows that with condom use,as it is well known, the probability is very low.

True, but there's other infections liable to skins and other areas, That was my questioning

That leaves herpes, HPV and syphilis.

Herpes is the most misunderstood STI and is both much more common and much less serious (expect for the unlucky few who have severe and/or frequent outbreaks, mostly women) (*) than usually understood. If you do your research in depth, you'll see why.

HPV is extremely common such as almost everyone who has sex will be infected by at least once strain. There is a vaccine to mitigate the risk of HPV-related cancers, but it must be administered at the beginning of when someone becomes sexually active to be maximally effective. Talk to your doctor for more info.

Syphilis is relatively rare compared to other STIs, but is on the rise. I have not researched this one specifically, but it would make sense that infection by skin to skin contact in the absence of a visible sore is relatively unlikely. These facts, combined with the fact that syphilis is mostly concentrated in the community of men who have sex with men, make me less worried about it.

(*) In such cases a daily antiviral can be taken to greatly reduce symptoms and likelihood of transmission.

Already tried, just asking, thinking
You unfortunately can't ever fully protect from hpv or herpes. I'm genuinely curious how one could see a good number of SP's and still remain clean of herpes and hpv. my understanding is that most people don't catch serious symptoms so are unaware. Too bad if you're one of the unlucky few who have frequent outbreaks.. I have a weak immune system (possibly more outbreaks) so I am quite terrified of catching both, maybe hobbying isn't for me either lol

Your next girlfriend might have herpes, or it can be transmitted by the next girl you kiss in a bar one evening. It’s not specific to the sex work industry.

The reality is that you probably don't. but these two viruses are extremely common: 64% of the population under 50 years old has herpes simplex type 1 (source: WHO), but most are asymptomatic.

yes but what are the odds of my next gf having herpes vs a sex worker?
For Herpes (HSV)... the same risk.

Have you ever had a cold sore?
Exactly, Herpes is easily transmitted via mucous/saliva. An open/closed cold sore (lips) can increase transmission risk and is reflective of the virus being active and replicating (as opposed to laying dormant/asymptomatic) in the infected individual.
