Hi all - does anyone know a service provider that likes jazz music? I’m always going to jazz venue by myself and would love some company whether it is a dinner date or a social… Also, the Jazz Festival calendar is soon to be announced and I would love to purchase 2 tickets instead of one… Thanks

Merci

Hello friend, when it comes to money, you might be surprised at how many people enjoy Jazz. Instead of searching specifically for someone who likes Jazz, you can simply choose a random service provider and take them to a Jazz location. It's an easy solution.

And that’s what is probably going to happen, but at the same time, I thought if the provider enjoys the music, the mood of the meeting would be enhanced.
On another note, I always enjoy reading your reviews and comments.

I truly appreciate your kind words, my friend. Let's have an honest conversation and acknowledge that not many people truly enjoy or understand the beauty of jazz. Jazz music is known for its complex harmonies, rhythms, and structures that can be intellectually stimulating for listeners.

Personally, I am a fan of jazz, but I have rarely come across others who share the passion for it. So, it's great to hear that you enjoy jazz as much as I do. I have always believed that those who appreciate jazz are often well-educated and have a refined taste in life.

For me, jazz music has been a source of comfort, helping me deal with my anxiety and bringing a sense of ease. However, finding service providers or even regular 9-5 people who truly appreciate the emotional depth and intricacies of jazz can be quite rare in Montreal.

It may be easier to find jazz enthusiasts in the US or Europe, where the genre is more popular.

Man, where did you learn to write as well like that? Color me jealous! Even in my mother tongue, I would have a hard time being so precise in just a few words…

When I read your comments, I was listening to Daniel Mille playing Astor Piazzola’s music - check it out, really nice.

For me jazz is about the emotions that goes through my mind and body while listening to it. A couple of months ago, I was at Upstairs, Marianne Trudel was playing music composed by a Brazilian author - don’t recall the name - and out of nowhere, my eyes just went so wet, I was about to cry…

I can never understand why so few people likes jazz music, and yet, so many attends the Jazz festival, are they all out of towners?

That is it for now, nice talking to you.

I think of lot of people appreciate good music and good musicians, without the need to adore jazz especially, to be passionate or musicians themselves. Festivals attract curious ones too and it's to be encouraged. Many people around me indeed say they don't like jazz, but they often reference upbeat pop jazz, so I only blame their unfamiliarity with the genre. I love jazz and many of its forms, popular music covers, old classics and new bands, Christmas songs, etc. It's a genre I appreciate and makes me feel good when I listen to it, like it's a safe space emotionally. I'm not a musician, I know nothing about it, but I love what I hear.

Exactly. This is how I discovered interesting bands.
One one my favorites (a rap/soul salt peanuts cover) ->
I remember the first time I saw this band, I was amazed.

Thank you for your kind words. The Jazz festival in Montreal is not only a music celebration but also a popular social event where people from all backgrounds come together to socialize and enjoy themselves, irrespective of their musical preferences. This special festival has become a trend in Montreal, attracting both locals and visitors from out of town.

Personally, while I appreciate the Nuevo tango genre of Astor Piazzolla, I also have a deep admiration for the timeless jazz classics of Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong.

Engaging in a conversation with someone as kind and knowledgeable as yourself is always a pleasure.

Mmmmm, although jazz is timeless, I am less into the jazz music you are referencing. But I’m curious about Frank. Could you guide me to his special recordings… I always thought him and Charles Aznavour were two of the greats regardless of genres, and yet somewhat similar in what they brought to their respective cultures. But then again, even though I know some of Sinatra’s classics, I am sure there are hidden gems I would know ….

Leto in Montreal about to meet a provider that enjoys jazz music…

Certainly! Frank Sinatra, one of the greatest vocalists of all time, has a treasure trove of hidden gems in his discography. While his classics are widely known, exploring albums like In the Wee Small Hours and Only the Lonely reveals his introspective and emotionally rich side. Additionally, Songs for Swingin Lovers showcases his talent for interpreting swing and big band classics, while Watertown and The Concert Sinatra offer a departure from his usual style with storytelling and powerful masterpieces live performances. These lesser-known recordings will unveil the depth and versatility of Sinatra's musical genius.Enjoy my friend!

Duke Ellington: "There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind."

And I agree with Giselle saying people enjoy good music. The Montreal Jazz Festival embraces many forms of music from around the world without boundaries. You may have Stanley Clarke's jazz fusion , the world jazzy pop of Pink Martini or Quebec's own Boogie Wonder Band bringing back the funky 70's. There's something for everyone. I like to get out of my comfort zone and discover a new favorite every year.

One year my new encounter was Chantal Chamberland from Montreal- Nord. Impeccable phrasing with a voice that is the focus without being overwhelmed by the instruments. Leto - I am sure many of the lovely local French ladies would love her. Here is a lovely rendition of "La Vie en Rose". Transports me to Paris in my mind whenever I hear this.

P.S. Obvio - Wow you read my mind on Frank Sinatra. If I had to recommend two Sinatra albums, they would be In the Wee Small Hours and Songs for Swinging Lovers. But you know for me, I always loved Watertown( although not one of his more successful albums.) Sinatra also did albums with Ellington, Basie, and Jobim. He has many hidden gems but the two Obvio mentioned are the best. (Great to see someone else here appreciates Sinatra.)

There you go, jazz is not a single genre in itself, it is more like a state of musical consciousness where, as the musicians/composers/arrangers understanding of structural harmony and rhythms, reach a master point where, they can go beyond these acknowledged concepts. By doing so they free themselves from it and start to improvise on themes and variations. So, there is so many different genres of jazz, it cannot be to everyone’s liking. Different personalities will appreciate different styles for different reasons.

I must admit I'm more into fusion. (UZEB, Return to forever, Billy Cobham, etc)

Those bands are what got me into jazz but after, I started to reel back in time, discovering and understanding the roots of it all. My musicianship and musical knowledge has taken me on an infinite journey doing so.

I, now, refer to certain jazz genres as " music strictly for musicians " as opposed to other more accessible genres. There’s no other way to express the gap that exists between listening to Tony Bennet, Sinatra and such, as opposed to bands like the ones you mentioned.

The major breaking point happened when Miles Davis left the big band formula and went on his own, taking with him a fellowship of progressive musicians who would, later lay the foundation of fusion.

So I have been pretty busy with work lately and I just finally took on a listening of your suggestions… Few thoughts: this is very soothing and calming music, it took the stress out very nicely. Once again, music has no boundaries, a few of the songs I listened to were known to me but performed by others when I listened to them. I love big band music, so it was a true pleasure listening to Swinging Lovers and since this is a Review Board, my favorite one has to be Makin’ Whoopee !!
Thanks so much for your suggestions!
