Hi all - does anyone know a service provider that likes jazz music? I’m always going to jazz venue by myself and would love some company whether it is a dinner date or a social… Also, the Jazz Festival calendar is soon to be announced and I would love to purchase 2 tickets instead of one… Thanks

When I read your comments, I was listening to Daniel Mille playing Astor Piazzola’s music - check it out, really nice.

For me jazz is about the emotions that goes through my mind and body while listening to it. A couple of months ago, I was at Upstairs, Marianne Trudel was playing music composed by a Brazilian author - don’t recall the name - and out of nowhere, my eyes just went so wet, I was about to cry…

I can never understand why so few people likes jazz music, and yet, so many attends the Jazz festival, are they all out of towners?

I can never understand why so few people likes jazz music, and yet, so many attends the Jazz festival, are they all out of towners?

I think of lot of people appreciate good music and good musicians, without the need to adore jazz especially, to be passionate or musicians themselves. Festivals attract curious ones too and it's to be encouraged. Many people around me indeed say they don't like jazz, but they often reference upbeat pop jazz, so I only blame their unfamiliarity with the genre. I love jazz and many of its forms, popular music covers, old classics and new bands, Christmas songs, etc. It's a genre I appreciate and makes me feel good when I listen to it, like it's a safe space emotionally. I'm not a musician, I know nothing about it, but I love what I hear.

And I agree with Giselle saying people enjoy good music. The Montreal Jazz Festival embraces many forms of music from around the world without boundaries. You may have Stanley Clarke's jazz fusion , the world jazzy pop of Pink Martini or Quebec's own Boogie Wonder Band bringing back the funky 70's. There's something for everyone. I like to get out of my comfort zone and discover a new favorite every year.

One year my new encounter was Chantal Chamberland from Montreal- Nord. Impeccable phrasing with a voice that is the focus without being overwhelmed by the instruments. Leto - I am sure many of the lovely local French ladies would love her. Here is a lovely rendition of "La Vie en Rose". Transports me to Paris in my mind whenever I hear this.

P.S. Obvio - Wow you read my mind on Frank Sinatra. If I had to recommend two Sinatra albums, they would be In the Wee Small Hours and Songs for Swinging Lovers. But you know for me, I always loved Watertown( although not one of his more successful albums.) Sinatra also did albums with Ellington, Basie, and Jobim. He has many hidden gems but the two Obvio mentioned are the best. (Great to see someone else here appreciates Sinatra.)

Those bands are what got me into jazz but after, I started to reel back in time, discovering and understanding the roots of it all. My musicianship and musical knowledge has taken me on an infinite journey doing so.

I, now, refer to certain jazz genres as " music strictly for musicians " as opposed to other more accessible genres. There’s no other way to express the gap that exists between listening to Tony Bennet, Sinatra and such, as opposed to bands like the ones you mentioned.

The major breaking point happened when Miles Davis left the big band formula and went on his own, taking with him a fellowship of progressive musicians who would, later lay the foundation of fusion.

So I have been pretty busy with work lately and I just finally took on a listening of your suggestions… Few thoughts: this is very soothing and calming music, it took the stress out very nicely. Once again, music has no boundaries, a few of the songs I listened to were known to me but performed by others when I listened to them. I love big band music, so it was a true pleasure listening to Swinging Lovers and since this is a Review Board, my favorite one has to be Makin’ Whoopee !!
