While I wasn't a fan of the man, I felt sorry for him and the life chosen for him by his father. He changed music, for better or worse - depending on your point of view, and he was someone who will never be forgotten by the tens of millions of his fans. And like any human being he at least deserves a bit of respect in death.

I know how you felt. The first things that came to mind when I heard he was rushed to the hospital weren't exactly kind thoughts. Funny, yes...but not very nice once I heard he had died. I figure we should at least give it a day or two before starting with the jokes.

Ed McMahon, Farrah and Michael. Like the old saying goes, never two without three. A very sad week in the entertainment world.

Hi music ? I liked it at one time, was a revolution in a sense and he did start a big revolution in video making. So... better than a lot of actual pop stars and others.

You won't get any argument from me. When I was growing up in the Middle East, I have to say he was the greatest cultural force the Americans had. Sure people listened to Madonna too but she never came close. I have fond memories of the occasional student getting called into the principal's office for showing up with a "Michael Jackson" hair style. I even recall several attempting to do the moon walk during recess and getting in trouble for it. Today's pop-artists have no where near the influence and global reach he did.

I will say it must have been 5 or 6 years later before I actually understood the lyrics for Billie Jean. Did he write his own songs or did he have a song writer on his payroll?

But despite his many bizarre personal antics and excentric behaviour, when you get down to the heart of the matter that man had more talent for singing, music, fashion, dancing in pure concentrated form within his person than probably anyone on this planet and we may not see another such prodigy for at least a few generations (Dare I say that Mozart was probably the last such wonder)...

Yes the man had severe self-image problems, yes he was likely crippled by massive social awkwardness, and I don't even want to get into the debacle that is his past relationships with children.

Yet despite all of this, through the power of his immense and unique talent, Michael Jackson managed to influence the whole planet in a peaceful way.

To the members that felt the need to insult the man and those who loved him and now must grieve him, what have YOU done to improve the world?

Dee, I can't disagree with you as I also am troubled with the constant freakshow that was the man's last 2 decades of life. It's so sad that he never got the help he obviously needed during his early childhood. I admit I was never more than a casual fan of the man's music, and in the '90's was a staunch detractor when in heated conversations with a former roommate I'll call the World's biggest Fan...

But the man is now dead, and for today deserves better than subpar SNL jokes...

It would help if you got rid of that huge scythe dripping with blood and those skulls hanging from your belt.

I saw the Jacksons in concert in 1981 in Providence, Rhode Island a little over a year before the Thriller album phenomena. I loved the music, but the show and the dancing I could never forget. I wonder if anybody ever had or will have the style and charisma Michael had in those days. So it was no surprise he became a huge star, but the immensity of his stardom after that album could probably only be equaled by gods like Valentino, Sinatra, Presley, and the Beatles collectively at the height of their reign. I remember going to the stores to buy albums often and seeing the videos from the Thriller album songs playing on a television. I'd be next to the television when Billie Jean came up and couldn't take my eyes off it only to turn around after and see anywhere from 30-50 other customers totally transfixed by the music and the moves. In the dance clubs the songs from the Thriller album came on at midnight and of the hundreds or thousands in the Chateau de Ville on the weekend barely a soul took their eyes off of the screen. To say the Jackson persona and his album were epic may still be too small. Thriller cost $700,000 to produce and Jackson's talent sold an estimated 45,000,000-100,000,000 albums worldwide. That's albums, not dollars.

I found a lot about Jackson and his lifestyle as he changed after the Thriller album extremely distasteful and sometimes beyond repulsive. But as ugly as some things were about him, his talent and charisma were Olympic...for a time.
