It was for the championship, you play until you have a winner no matter how long it takes.

Not in soccer.

By the way, i believe the overtime in hockey playoffs should be altered. Some of those games last 2 and 3 overtime periods. This is way too long and there are already too many playoffs games. The only reason they're now all best of 7's is purely for cash-grab reasons by the dick millionaire and billionaire owners.

Overtime periods in the playoffs should be like the season: 4 on 4 hockey, but for an entire 20 minute period.

Yep. There are many options. Play with 9 players seems the best one to open up the field for extra time. Maybe also forcing each team bring 3 new player from the bench. This would test the preparation of the whole team. Or at the end of 2 extra time if still tied, play a second game! But no penalty... That is such a lottery...

Cheers,

Soccer is a sport where the players are all in constant movement. Having a soccer game lasting more than 3 hours is unthinkable. And very dangerous. I'm all for penalty kicks if there still isn't a winner after two overtime periods. Having a contest decided by totally exhausted players who can barely move wouldn't be any better. That's also a reason why i hate the current NHL playoffs system in regards to overtime. When they reach the 2nd and 3rd overtimes, the players are so exhausted that they're barely skating anymore. And imagine how exhausted the goalies are considering all the heavy equipment they carry and they have to stand there for hours long. It's not a good representation of the game.

Upon further consideration, i now agree with you. Losing the championship on penalty kicks was a joke! Penalty kicks are nothing but fluke anyway. Maybe if the kicking distance would be pushed back further goalies would have a better chance of stopping the ball instead of simply guessing where the shot will go.

Here's a solution i just thought about: If a championship game in soccer can't be determined after regulation play and the overtime periods, then hold another game a few days later.

That's what happens when you're forcing a player to play. He would have rather wanted to be an assistant-coach in England.

This is what they used to do going back 30/40 years ago, would be very difficult to do with today's logistics TV coverage etc.

Perhaps they could play 30 minute extra time with 6 players a side and no offside rule with first goal deciding the game.
I bet that would be a bit more exciting and more interesting than penalty shots and I doubt that it would go the 30 minute distance.

That wouldn't be fun no offside it won't last 10 min.

They should continue after the 30 min overtime, both team has to take one player out of the field every 5 min it wouldn't last that long afterwards.
