Today, the Ministry of Health confirmed 15 cases in Quebec.

This CNN article provides a good summary of the situation

Of note: "Overall, monkeypox risk is moderate for people with multiple sexual partners and low for the broader population, according to a rapid risk assessment report published Monday by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control."

So, although it is not a STI per se (i.e. it can spread without sexual contact), in the current outbreak it seems to behave like one. Most cases so far have been among gay and bisexual males, but there is no reason why it would not spread further. Hopefully it can be contained to some extent. The disease itself, even though not deadly (the 1% fatality rate quoted is for poor countries, hence overestimated) is one that I would rather much avoid (see CNN link above).

It may not kill you , but your wife might. How do you explain the little red pox ulcers to your wife.
If it`s confirmed that there are 15 cases in QC alone , that is scary.

I am single so I don't think about that, but I do get the point.
15 cases confirmed, yes. Are they all linked? Don't know.

As they often remind it's not an STI... it can spread without sexual contact... They even suspect it can be airborne...
Could this explain why it's spreading outside of "normal" environnement? We don't know yet... Time will say

Latest count is 25 cases suspected in Quebec. That is close to doubling in a week. A relatively high rate for a" hard to catch" viral infection.
The government will vax all contacts. Curious if a small pox vax taken 40 to 60 years ago is still effective in preventing this disease.

For now everything points towards close sexual contact. The main hypothesis is that it started in raves in Belgium and Spain which were attended by people from different countries. Most (all?) cases in Montreal are in men who have sex with men (MSM, medical term) again pointing to sexual transmission networks. That being said, it could spread to the general population if all cases cannot be isolated effectively.

Everything around Monkeypox is sus right now.
Suddenly over 10 countries have it... without no contact between those who have it.
Some didn't even travel in the last 30 days.

What caused an endemic virus in Africa to start infecting people around the world.
What triggered this?

In the news: Monkeypox is not considered a sexually-transmitted infection, but the virus can survive on surfaces such as bedding and is transmitted through prolonged close contact.
It’s not sexual activity as such that transmits it. It’s skin-to-skin contact that transmits it as far as we know at this moment,” said Dr. Michael Libman, a tropical disease expert and professor of medicine and infectious disease at McGill University.

Lol. What happens during sexual activity... close skin to skin contact.

Yes it's skin to skin... But it's not an ITS per say!
You could be dancing or playing sports and have skin to skin contact!

Smallpox (same virus family) was one of the first biological weapon that was used. Britain army gave smallpox contaminated sheets to first nations from Canada to kill them.
From a report I saw from France2 TV, the firs cases in Europe were effectively linked to someone coming back from Africa.
We have a smallpox vaccine that can be used to prevent and cure Monkeypox.

An interesting article on smallpox from the International Journal of Infectious Disease

Skin viruses, like pityriasis rosea and scabies for instance, are not fun. This sounds way worse.

If you find yourself losing sleep about monkey pox I would suggest avoiding motel rooms, parlors and SPs and MPs altogether. Currently I'm in the I don't give a fuck mode, after two years of covid, so it's not gonna stop me from doing what I wanna do.

Of course keeping very good hygiene Is always a plus and although I enjoy the freedom of not wearing a mask, I do wear it in pharmacies that may have people infected with covid or other diseases....but maybe it's just a false sense of security though.

Updating with the latest info. I think it's worth keeping on our radar:
  • 132 cases in Quebec (including 126 in Montreal)
  • 100% in men who have sex with men (but could eventually spread outside of that population)
  • Vaccination open to a larger population, but only for men with partners of the same sex
