However, there does not seem to be a similar thread discussing Montreal bars, although there are multiple threads on individual bars in Montreal. (Message to Mods: If there is already a Montreal bar thread please merge this posting with the latter).
Piranha Bar, 680, Ste-Catherine West
This place is located on Ste-Catherine in the same block as, and just east of SuperSex. They play live music in a relaxed atmosphere. I wandered in a couple of times during the Jazz Festival and they had a band playing Blues the first night I was there, and most recently a Jazz band. There is no cover and the prices are quite reasonable. One of the things I like about this place is the accessibility. There is no brass door, no doorman, no bouncer, nobody to show you where to sit and then wait for a tip. Rather, the door opens onto the street, and you can just wander in and sit where you want. If want you want a drink right away you can order one at the bar. Otherwise, you can check the place out first and eventually the bartender will come around and take you order (l usually like to order my drinks from an attractive waitress rather than a bartender, but in this case, given the other advantages of this place, I am willing to make an exception).
I would be interested if anyone knows of bars in Montreal which offer advantages similar to that that of the Piranha Bar: -ie. live band, no cover, no doorman, reasonable prices, relaxed atmosphere, easy accessibility.
