Are the casinos fun? Should you stay downtown? Is the poker good? Is it easy to meet women? Where is the best place?

Arrghhhh.... two things I hate most about Montreal. The winters and that casino. This darn joint allows piggybacking. What is that? You don’t “own” your spot at the table meaning everyone can use your spot to place a bet. Most irritating practice allowed. I experienced this at the baccarat tables. Don’t know about other table games. Also very annoying to get to by public transportation. Have to either drive yourself or a cab. If you want to gamble/wager/speculate you are better off heading to Vegas. Or even..... Atlantic City and this place is a dump.

Hey Num,

I found piggybacking annoying also. I was new to the casino (playing Blackjack) and when someone did that I said 'No'. Either that time or
another time that I said 'No' the person appealed to the dealer.

The dealer explained I didn't have to let them piggyback. It was confirmed a couple times after that as well. Other table games may be different (prob are)

Cheers,
Fredd

The first and last time I was there was August 2008 so things may have changed. There were no appeals then and I saw a few arguments going about at various tables because of this. Tacky. Then I realized it is not privately own and is run by the government. Doh! Explains why they are so damn cheap too. For those who play baccarat knows that you are allowed to record the results. In all the casinos there are double ended pens of red and blue ink available. Yet here you are only offered a rinky dink lead pencil. Doh!

Piggybacking and appealing to a dealer about piggybacking is absolutely ridiculous. I wonder what would happen if someone tried doing that at the Bellagio or Mirage in Vegas.

Around the corner
I wasn’t very impressed with the Montreal Casino.
Completely sub par to Casinos in Vegas or Montecarlo.
That is what you get when something is government owned and there is zero competition.
I did not see any obvious SP activity, and I think most reputable ladies don’t want to hang out at the casino to try to pick up clients.
Kind of stupid turning the old French Pavilion from Expo 67 into a casino when they could have built a nice modern facility.
Completely in line with the ridiculous roof of the Olympic stadium but again what can you expect from the government.

If residing in the East Coast or more likely near Canada. Only place I recommend is Encore Boston Harbor or maybe MGM Springfield if you want to gamble. Personally I never been to Encore Boston Harbor but I have stayed at the Wynn/Encore in Vegas many times and the experience is AWESOME and you will be WOWed. Massachusetts actually did this right.

If and when this Covid thing is O-V-E-R and we can cross each other's borders again strongly recommend you make a visit to the Encore.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are NICE. Just that they are in the boonies but very well designed and both are HUGE!

Oh okay about Springfield. MGM did screw over Springfield as they first promised a tower then they changed the whole design. Personally I am focused on the experience and playing conditions of a casino.

Playgrounds Poker is good. A few of my former co-workers have nothing but good things to say about it. For me no idea since I don’t play poker.

I agree the Montreal Casino is nothing special, though it is often a part of my long weekends, usually on a Saturday afternoon. Every visit I ask myself, “Why the fuck am I here?”

Best word to describe casino: dreary

I think the food choices are horrendous (we talked about how bad Montreal pizza is, I was craving DiGiorno after tasting Montreal casino pizza), and the casino doesn’t offer free booze. Drink prices are pretty expensive.

Don’t get me started talking about the layout of that place. You feel like you are in a 1990’s US shopping mall.

Once in a while you could watch a live band. I also found some young ones who had zero idea what they were doing at a blackjack table. Hitting on 17 is not a good idea, and my explaining that nearly started an international incident.

A Saturday afternoon visit for an hour is fine, though a taxi ride will set you back. If nothing else, telling Customs you are visiting the casino gets you through with zero questions other than “how much cash are you carrying?”

Someone called AC a dump. Give me the Borgata or Ocean Resort on a Saturday, and a NNJ escort appointment on the drive down or back, and I’ll often take it as an alternative to Montreal. I assure you the casino part of that experience is 10x better, so is the pizza.

Cirque du Soleil and Loto-Quebec proposed a plan in 2006 to build a new casino (along with a hotel and shopping area) in the Peel Basin area (near Griffintown and the site of the oft-proposed MLB stadium) but it never happened. Local politicians and "advocates" for poor people criticized and resisted the proposal and so Cirque pulled out.

It's too bad because a hotel and casino might have reinvigorated the neighborhood and provided a lot of service industry jobs to lower income people. The area has slowly been somewhat gentrified, so development has happened anyway. But high-end condos don't really help the poor the way that a Cirque development might have.

Griffintown is one of the cooler neighborhoods in Montreal. It's so cool that various condo properties and businesses, some of which are not technically in Griffintown proper, market themselves as being in "Griffintown, Quebec" and not Montreal. It's unfortunate that a hotel and casino wouldn't have wanted to be near such a cool neighborhood.

There are also some very cool restaurants there. So many in fact that I never had the chance to try them all and further efforts in that regard must await border reopening.

If my memory serves me correctly- and it might not because I am getting older- the XO Party in 2016 was in a Condo in Griffintown. I went to that party with a good buddy of mine - NYCBadBoy. Bad Boy and I attended multiple parties over the years but that was the last one by any agency that I went to and the only one in Griffintown. It was in a condo not far from the area described by Captain Renault and Renault's post triggered my memory of walking there with Bad Boy. I remember that Pat98 was either the unofficial chef or unofficial bartender or both at that party. I do believe that some food was home cooked for that party. Was a good time.

I don't really go to the casino to eat, drink or socialize.

My opinion of the casino (or any casino really) is really determined by how much cash I'm leaving with.

I'm a fan of the public transport option rather then driving my car there.

The odds for blackjack there aren't very favorable to the player, no surrender, dealer must hit on soft 17. You can say the same about the Texas hold'em table game as well. The rake in the poker room is rather high too, unfortunately.

The only two positive aspects in my opinion are the free refreshment areas located on each floor (coffee, soda, juice) and the higher than average bad beat jackpots for poker on occasion. I know the bad beat jackpot reached close to the vicinity of 2 million a couple years ago which was impressive, although EXTREMELY difficult to win, obviously.

It's certainly not Vegas, but it's something to do once in a while for me

Does blackjack here pay 3/2 or 6/5?
Note to all if one wants to partake. AVOID at all cost if BJ pays 6/5. You are being ripped off and you don’t even know it.

It pays 3/2 on most tables $20-25, and up, although on some tables (low minimums) it exists, unfortunately
