if you are the stereotype pit bull owner ( think you are a bad ass with a bad ass dog ) chances are you want a fighting dog and will not bring the dog up properly to be a family dog ( which it can be ).

You just explained why there's a law. I think the law is unfair as hell. But the people you describe are the cause of this, and because the design of the dog makes them able to inflict some of the worst bites and damage it calls more attention. It doesn't matter if other dogs are worse when the numbers point to a certain breed.

Too bad. I recently ran into some pit bull types. I love all dogs, except chihuahuas, and I asked the pit bull owners if it was okay to pet them. The dogs were just fine. But the irresponsible owners make a law necessary so they will be held responsible. Because of these people you've got to err on the side of the victims, as unjust as it may be for decent pit bull owners.

I am the owner of a chihuahua, one of the very most difficult dog to train. This said without exaggeration, this is well known.
And I had several dogs in my life before that adoption from my childrenhood, even very specialized working dogs. And they were all very much bigger, but very most easier too.

My appeal for a chihuahua was that I wanted to have a very small friendly canine friend able to follow me everywhere easily.

They're anything but friendly. I've seen what this breed is like many times and it loves to takes over control from the owner. Sometimes I've imagined punting one across a yard. Lucky for them I couldn't stand to hurt an animal. There are so many other small breeds that would have been much better, not counting the relative purchase amount, if money is a concern.

Firstly, I believe that humans should be personally responsible for the actions of their dogs. By that I mean, for example, if a dogs bites a human, the owner should be charged with assault.

Secondly, dogs are filthy flea-busses who are bathed perhaps once a month. I am amazed that people still repeat the myth that dogs mouths are somehow cleaner than humans.
http://www.petplace.com/article/dogs/behavior-training/understanding-your-dog/fact-or-fiction--is-a-dogs-mouth-cleaner-than-a-humans Do humans routinely great each other by licking each other's assholes? Do they lick and eat everything off the ground? Aside from seeing-eye dogs, I wouldn't mind if dog ownership was banned.

If you have love and money to spare, instead of wasting it on producing meat (which is bad for the planet) for dog food to be converted to dog shit, why not adopt a child with Foster Parents Plan?

I am not sure if anyone mentioned but this law was enacted because a pit bull killed a Montreal woman and then attacked the police officer:

http://m.newser.com/story/231763/in-contentious-move-montreal-bans-pit-bulls.html

Maria's chihuahua is probably a nasty little dog and I would not stick fingers too close to it's mouth, but it's not likely to kill anyone.

Nobody has mentioned how this woman lost her life apparently to a dog that came on her property.

I never liked these game dogs which were primarily bred for fights and blood sports. Why can't people just stick to golden retrievers and huskies.

Vlad you don`t make sense.
If dogs should be banned because they eat everything off the floor and pollute with their shit....then maybe babies should be banned for the same reasons.
BTW I do not own a dog and I love babies .

If it were up to me pitbulls should all be put into a meat grinder. Sorry, but i've seen with my own eyes what damage these killing beats can do and if some of you would have seen what i did, you'd feel differently about these killer dogs.

Mostly owned by toughies, get rid of toughie dogs and you will see less toughies strutting down the street annoying and intimidating people.

Around Montréal...

Oh, don't worry, she doesn't have the control over me. Oh boy did I have had to not let her even an inch left. I talked to an owner of a chihuahua before adopting, of course, and he told me that we have to be very serious with them to stay "the boss". So for that part, I knew. And that was no problem in that department at all. Don't forget that I am very well seasoned with dogs since my childhood, and with specialized trained working dogs too, who are making great things that regular dogs aren't doing at all. But you are true, the chihuahuas are renowned to be such hard headed, and that's true. Mine is very submissive now, I did not have the choice to be very but very severe with her. I treat her like a dog, not like a baby. When we go outside, she is walking always at my feet, no leech needed. And she come back running when called, and sit to my feet. The only last detail that I don't have control, is when she is seeing bigger dogs, or someone running or coming on my land, she has the guardian inside her and she is yelling even when I am telling her to stop. She never bite someone and never tried.

EB:
Maria's chihuahua is probably a nasty little dog and I would not stick fingers too close to it's mouth, but it's not likely to kill anyone.

And not, she never bite, she's just kinda nervous and protect "her" territory. Bigger dogs like labrador are way much cooler.
If ever you will try to be near of my dog or to catch her, she will just keep her distance out of reach. She is just very fearful. But still want to yell and act as she could be brave. :pound:

And one more important detail, I can't take her with me everywhere because she became much bigger than what she was expected to be.
I thought I bought a dog who will be at most, 5 lbs and all small, able to be in a purse if needed. And she is not. I should have bought a male as my first idea was, but my heart just chose her. By the way, I was juggling between having a chihuahua or a yorkie. And I feel that I made the not so good decision after reading your previous comment. Oh well, she is a very lovely and dedicated dog. But very very much. I can tell. And nobody is in danger when they come home for sure. She will be very happy, if you seat, to be pampered and pet.

Have you ever seen what humans can do?

I have no idea what you mean. I thought slaughtering each other 50 million at a time was a trait of our vast superiority over any other species.

Got to say point is the gotcha of the year.

I didn't exactly write that dogs should be banned, but rather that I wouldn't mind if they were. There is no chance of that happening in my lifetime and anyway, I don't believe that a law should be passed to ban everything I disapprove of. My opinion is that they (and most other animals) should not be kept as pets as they are a filthy waste of resources.

Babies grow up and cease to eat things off the floor. It would be an understatement to say that banning humans is problematic.

Let's put them all in a grinder... now that would give other species a break.

Animals can be cruel and not just in hunting food. For example, many kill in vying for mates - from crocodiles to even doves. Cats can torture smaller animals even when feeding and mating are not involved.

As for putting all humans in a grinder, I sincerely hope that you are not volunteering to set an example. And anyway, who would then keep merb alive?

You guys all understand that it has to do with the owners, right?

I believe some race are more difficult to tame than others.
Also, Mental illness also exists for dogs.
My friend and his girlfriend wanted to have a dog. The first one, Mix Pitbull and Labrador was unpredictable, jumping on people.
They brought it back to the place they bought it after a month and they took another one, same race, they have it since.

I don't know all the owners of Pittbull that killed or attacked children, But I'm sure some, if not the majority, were good people with no bad intent and that tried to manage the dog the best of their knowledge...
But no matter who they were, the facts remain. Pitbulls are powerfull, there is a possibility they become dangerous, so they don't have their place in a city.

We cannot keep bad owners from having pitbulls, we cannot keep mentally illed pitbull from being owned, but we have to stop the killing of innocent children playing in the backyard!
So the solution is simple, no more pitbull allowed.

Hey cloudsurf, so the woman who killed 2 innocent people on the highway after she stopped suddenly her car to avoid killing family ducks, she did an acceptable choice?
Let's choose the duck for once... Pfff...

If you have a ride with your car, and you can't stop quick enough to avoid or your cat, or a baby carriage that you don't know if it is empty or not. You will hit one but still can take a decision to avoid one.
What is your choice (priority)?

Thank you for first mentioning you are talking about dogs.

Deep down I think the decision might have been taken specifically because the city does not really trust the majority of owners of Pitbull. Easier to ban the dog.

I would like to remind all of you that Petey on the Little Rascals was a Pit Bull

I am a huge gun dog fan. I would like to see someone try to make my Golden Retriever fight. Unless you are a chipmunk or a wounded bird you have nothing to fear from her.

I do not beleive that. Look at the majority of owners of pitbull. I have dogs since 30 years. To many many Parc à Chien I have been, it's not really the pitbull that were not welcomed, it's their owners! Sad but true.

What is your choice (priority)?

I have been involved in several cases where car collisions resulted due to one driver swerving to avoid running over a raccoon, or a squirrel, and had a head on collision with a car in the opposing lane of traffic, causing significant human injuries while sparing an animal's life. I come in to sort out who is liable for the human damages, but it occurred to me that some kind of psychological decision is made to spare the animal pain while not considering the consequences. It should be noted that a raccoon or squirrel does not constitute a "sudden and unanticipated emergency" in the roadway which defeats negligence, while a moose, deer or tractor trailer tire in the roadway might constitute such an emergency situation.

We can't lose sight of the facts of the case. The owner of this pit bull was apparently a student who told Montreal police he left the dog in his apartment. Somehow, the dog got out of the apartment, wandered onto the 55 year old woman's property, and killed her. It doesn't sound to me like a case of an owner being anything more than negligent in securing his animal. There is no criminal liability for negligent acts in most cases. So this leaves us with the dog. A homicidal creature, and it was put down by the police. Now, Montreal seeks to put down the whole breed. Should it? Well, that is for you and the Montreal residents, through your city council, to decide. And the voice of your representatives has spoken. Now there will be a court challenge, the law will be applied and we shall see the results.

This is the owner:
"Franklin Junior Frontal possède un casier judiciaire chargé. Délits mineurs, mais qui impliquent toujours un aspect violent."

My translation:
Franklin Junior Front has a heavy criminal record. Minor offenses, but always involve violent aspect.

Typical pitbull owner...

I do agree with you that in this case, he will not be charge. He is not responsable for the dog finding it's way out. He is only responsable for being too stupid to own a pitbull, and there is probably no remedy to that.
