I looked at the menu and there is no question I would have ordered what your date did, Bavette du Boeuf (flank steak). I love flank steak, but I have always had it prepared Cuban style or marinated American style. So I would like to try it French style with the shallot sauce.

I may have to get Stripper Lover to go with me to this place. I am in the process of developing a restaurant list for the next trip, so all other suggestions are welcome.

BTW, I ate at the Sho Dan on Metcalf and enjoyed it very much.

Last time i was there i had the octopus ravioli, which was incredible....i loved it! and the beef tenderloin as a main.

Funny I ordered the same thing the last time I was there, I also loved the octopus ravioli but the beef tenderloin wasn't my cup of tea - should have had the lamb.

Maybe next time.

Comparing prices on dishes or items served in restaurants is one way of doing so but there is a vast difference in the quality & aging of meats served at Restaurant du Vieux Port & Queue de Cheval, Moishe's, Gibbys & Rib N Reef. The latter group buys the beef aged to their specs as well as a higher quality of beef to begin with. That being said, I'd rather pay an additional few dollars for a higher quality & taste.

SL: Do you know of any high-end restaurant that serves Kosher/Halal beef?

That's too bad. I have an allergy to beef blood, so can only eat Kosher/Halal.

Sho-Dan

A short review:
Just came back from Sho-Dan on Metcalfe, near the corner of de Maisonneuve.
I was accompanied by another lovely lady, of course. :)

We picked various sushi rolls, about 6 different ones at all. All were excellent.
My date picked most of them, so I cannot recall them all. I do know we had the smoked salmon sushi, salmon roll, shrimp sushi, spider rolls, and a couple of different crab rolls.

The bill was less than $50 before tip, which was not bad at all. Neither of us had alcohol, and stuck with water.

Thanks to EagerBeaver, Candy, and one of the front desk clerks at my hotel, for highly recommending this place.
It was a very good choice to go to instead of Mikasa.
I will return there on my next trip.

I prefer to sit at a 90 degree angle, but some women do prefer the straight across the table arrangement.

Last mini-review (as I just arrived back home)

Went to Reuben's on Peel and DeMaisonneauve before checking out. I like to make it a tradition of getting their Reuben's Smoked Meat Sandwich when in town. So I went at 10:30, just to see of they could cook one up for me to take out, that way I could eat it on the hotel terrace before my noon check-out.

The hostess was so clueless. She said it may take at least a 1/2 hour or so because it was still breakfast. Now I would understand that if I ordered anything else, but come on! The most popular sandwich on the menu should be available at all times! They must be curing and cooking that meat at all hours of the day and night. So the manager came by and asked what was going on. I asked her what I wanted, and she said what I expected, "Sure, it will be ready in 5 minutes." I gave the manager the tip, and got my sandwich. Still the best sandwich in Montreal!

Booths?

Actually I am having an extremely hard time thinking of any good Montreal restaurants that have snuggly booths. Some places may have little two-person booths which enforce a face to face seating, but the added privacy might allow a little more touching or footsie. In a booth for four of course you could sit side by side and sometimes very close. Ideal would be those wrap-around booths one sees in coffee shops or piazza places, but in an upscale restaurant instead.

I was eating at Suite 701 in Old Montreal with an escort a few weeks ago. They have couch like benches against the walls with little cocktail tables in front. We were able to sit thigh-to-thigh, and stroke each other while we sipped our Granny (apple) martinis and nibbled on gourmet snacks from the Aix Cuisine du Terroir kitchen next door. Not very private, but there was so much activity all around no one paid much attention to us. Also Version restaurant in Old Montreal has some couches on their back courtyard; they are not very private until it gets dark and then there is only the dim torch light.

This place has VERY snuggly booths facing the street. I am not the biggest guy but I felt seriously snuggled, not by Stripper Lover with whom I was dining :)eek: !), but by the sheer lack of space in those booths. Very claustrophobic.

I would put it up there with Le Jardin de Panos, Casa de Mateo, and Pepe and Carlos (downstairs), as far as overly snuggly dining experiences I have had in Montreal. We had a private hobbyist dinner at le Jardin de Panos a few months ago and Stripper Lover ended up spilling wine in his lap due to the guy in back of him backing his chair up and into SL. SL was essentially body checked from behind. I saw it coming, but I could not get the words out fast enough to warn SL.

I have noticed in Montreal there seem to be a lot of restaurants that sacrifice the comfort of diners by cramming as many tables as possible together to maximize seating in the available space. I personally prefer to dine in comfort and not with the nearest diner breathing and/or spitting a half chewed mouthful of smoked meat sandwich into my face.:rolleyes: Montrealerers, on the other hand, seem to prefer the closeness and camaraderie that goes with exchanging spittle in close quarters.

Verses

Verses, the restaurant at the Hotel Nelligan has two very nice booths in their front room. Samantha and I were seated in one on my second dinner there; alas, Karma and I were seated at a table for two. I did qualify with the awesome meal and the great wine, but unfortunately not the booth.

With this latest information I'll be sure to request the booth the next time!

I think he meant to write Granny Smith Apple Martini. Here is the recipe:

4 oz Smirnoff vodka
4 oz DeKuyper Sour Apple Pucker schnapps
2 slices Granny Smith apples

Place vodka and green apple schnapps in a martini shaker with plenty of ice. Shake until very well chilled. Pour into two martini glasses and top with thin apple slices.
