Can anyone recommend a good Indain restaurant? I'm coming back to Montreal next month for another visit and looking for some good places to eat. I've been to Le Taj in the downtown area near the Hotel Omni, and I thought it was very good, particularly compared to the Indian restaurants in my area which are mediocre at best. Any help would be much appreciated.

Here are two, though one is quite far from town.
Bombay Choupati, 5011 Blvd. des Sources (at the corner of Gouin), 421-3130 (Pierrefonds)—"This one may seem a bit out of the way, and the drive along Blvd. des Sources isn’t exactly inspiring, but, make no mistake, Bombay Choupati is a “must.” In fact, we can’t emphasize enough just how much of a gem this little South Indian/Madras-style restaurant is. All the South Indian classics are on offer—such as idli (steamed semolina cakes served in a spicy vegetarian sambar, mixed vegetable tikki (spicy potato patties), and, of course, masala dosa (perhaps the quintessential South Indian dish: a lentil-flour crèpe stuffed with a potato curry and accompanied with sambar and coconut chutney—and they’re all among the very best we’ve had anywhere (London, Vancouver, Toronto, Bangalore, wherever). Also recommended, Bombay-style fruit chat and a devastatingly delicious butter chicken, which may very well have raised the bar on butter chicken in this town to new heights. Fantastic, friendly, completely homemade (right down to the yogurt (!), the fiery green chili sauce, and the tamarind sauce, which is made from fresh tamarinds (!) not tamarind pulp), and cheap, too. Top that." That's cut-and-paste from my favorite Montreal food blog. Let me add that their Fire Dosa might be my favorite dish in Montreal.
Bombay Mahal, 1001 Jean-Talon W., 273-3331 (Park Extension)—"Informal Indian restaurant that serves very good dosas and channa samosas." This one is just a block from the Acadie Metro.
Romados is certainly more popular, but I prefer Coco Rico. The chicken is pretty much the same, but Coco Rico's roast potatoes kill Romados' fries. The ribs at Coco Rico are also fabulous.
Thanks Rumple, I really appreciate the recommendations. Bombay Choupati sounds fantastic. Unfortunately it may be a little out of the way for me on this trip. I'll be staying in the Downtown area (Hotel Omni), and I'm not renting a car this trip as I don't really want to be driving the Montreal streets in February. So I might have to save that one for the next trip when the weathers warmer. But I will definitely check out Bombay Mahal which I can easily get to on the Metro. Thanks again for your help.
If you want a fantastic burger while you're here. Try Bunns on Ste-Catherine corner St Marc. I think they're fantastic. But their fries arent really my thing. Too greasy and sloppy for me.
Smuler, I also saw that episode of Anthony Bourdain's new show, "The Layover". I jotted down all the restaurants he recommended, and hope to try out many of them soon, including Joe Beef. To be honest though, I liked his old show, "No Reservations" better.

On my way to honor my Favorite tonight I noticed a small new Portugese Chicken restaurant (I think its new) called Charcos on corner of Bishop and Maisonneuve.
Anybody know if its good? It's conveniently located for an afterlove snack so maybe i'll try it sometime.

Hoping there might be restaurant historians on here who remember a restaurant called Paesano's that used to be popular many years ago. Trying to help someone doing a school project and hoping would remember where it was situated and when it closed. Google has been no help so it must be closed for a while now.

If I'm not wrong, Paesano was located on Côtes-des-Neiges on the corner south-west of Lacombe. I think it closed in the early or mid-eighties.

It's the same restaurant but when they moved the spirit of the original restaurant was left behind...especially the Chef who went to work in La Gioconda on Decarie.

Casa Tapas
as far as i can see, no one has mentioned a terrific Tapas resto since EB's last recap in 2009. i give you boys, CASA TAPAS http://www.casatapas.com/
a 2 dining room tapas restaurant is on Rachel, 2 blocks west of St.Denis. with the tiny narrow neighborhood street, and being so close to St.Denis, you'll feel like you won the lottery if and when you find parking. there are probably no more than 25 small tables + a bar area that likely seats 6 people.
this restaurant is one of my Top 3 in Montreal because:
1. Amazing food - i'd call their take on tapas "North American fusion" ... 2 dishes you must try
(a) cordero a la castellana 14$ [filet mignon d’agneau/lamb, amandes/almonds et poivrons/peppers] ... if you don't end up soaking up the sauce with pieces of bread, you have no pulse!
(b) calmar farcies - ??$ didn't see it on their menu my last visit 2 weeks ago but ask them... stuffed squid with some tasty ground meat filling, again that dish's sauce was to die for.
2. Great wine selection - all the servers have traditionally been very knowledgable in helping you select a bottle/glass to accompany your meal, all imported
3. Decor will transport you to Barcelona and conjur up fond memories of your travels, if you'ev never been to Barcelona, you've love the designs, textures, patterns inspired by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (the columns are a mini copy of the columns in Sagrada Familia)
4. Professional and courteous service - makes you feel fairly welcome and you usually leave with a smile on your face even if you drop 150-170$ for dinner for 2. your water glass is almost never dry, there's always someone nearby you can ask for assistance even though they're generally busy
5. Great atmosphere - Great for dates, romance, group get togethers, corporate/professional, families.
this restaurant comes to mind because as i mentioned, it's one of my top 3 but also because i thought they were closed for renovations earlier this year with scafolding in the front of the building and dust everywhere outside when they were actually open but obscured by the facade upgrade going on outside.
PS those of you who like Pintxo, (1) why? (2) if you dined at Casa Tapas, I'm almost certain you will never go back to Pintxo...

Thanks for the review and update. As someone who has eaten at both Casa Tapas and Pintxo, I would tend to agree with your observation. The main problem with Pintxo is that they are overpriced.
It has indeed been some years since I have eaten at Casa Tapas. But I recall the last time I was there I made a most unusual observation. I am not sure if this was in my 2009 recap or not. I dined with a friend and at the next table over, there was a large table of about 10 young ladies. All of the ladies appeared to be about 20 or 21 and every single one of them was smoking hot. Usually when you see a group of young female friends there are a couple of standouts and then some that are so-so. But every single lady at this table of 10 at Casa Tapas was certifiably smoking hot. And then I started to analyze the situation, and try to come up with whether this was a statistical oddity, or whether there was some connection between the ladies, like maybe they were all beauty pageant contestants. The latter was the only rational explanation I could come up with for what I was observing, because I have never seen, before or after this in my entire life, more unbelievably good looking ladies at one dinner table. It seemed impossible, implausible, unthinkable, yet I saw it with my own two eyes.
Thanks again for your update review, I enjoyed it and hope to go back to Casa Tapas some time this summer.

Maybe you found yourself in the middle of a Merb GT EB without knowing it
I have actually been to about 4 MERB GTs and an equal number of private agency parties in the past 10 years, including the legendary Eleganza party in 2007. I never saw that much talent at one dinner table, or anything close.
I suspect it was a bunch of ladies entered in a beauty pageant, maybe Miss Quebec or Miss Canada. I don't keep track of those events so I would not know.
Another possibility is that they were recruits of Rael. This is around the time a few years back when Playboy magazine did a feature on the girls of Rael. I actually saw Rael once in or near the courthouse in Montreal.
