Actually...

The NFL kicked off the season Thursday night with a 30-20 Patriots win over the Raiders.

I hope your right about the Cowboys chances at a wild card and Demarcus Wares' talent. I'm a Cowboys fan all the way back from the Era of Landry, Staubach, and Doomsday. Parcells is a genius but the players have to buy in to his system for it to work. If Bledsoe does what Parcells tells him to this time around, and keeps his ego in check, they could well be a playoff team.

I agree with Pats, Colts, and Steelers for the playoff picture in the AFC.
I agree with Eagles, Falcons in the NFC.
The other picks are iffy, including my Cowboys.

I'll say the Super Bowl will be between the Colts and the Eagles barring major injuries to Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison or Edgerrin James and Donovan Mcnabb, Terrell Owens, or Brian Westbrook. It will be a shootout, something like 42-35. Not much defense. Who will win? Pick em'.

What??? You don't think the Dolphins will win the AFC East?

Miami has always been my favorite team since I was a little kid. Last season was very painful but am happy there's new hope with a new coach, first round running back, etc.

In fact, I love the Dolphins so much I almost moved to Miami when I graduated college many, many years ago but I just can't stand the humidity and mosquitos. So, I moved to Los Angeles and love LA (except for traffic). But love Montreal too and would move there if not for the long, long, Winters. :p

Go Dolphins!!! :D

The dolphins?

Hey, if you are picking the Dolphins to win their division over let say Buffalo or New England, well that will be something I will pay to see.

The Dolphins have not been decent since the early years of Marino:D

On the other hand my Chargers will finally stop enbarrasing all of us from the Mission Bay area and get decent this year. They just lost to Dallas :( but they will come back.

You want picks, here are mine:

NFC: Eagles - Falcons for the NFC champoionship (Eagles winning)

with Minessotta, Seatle and the Panthers in on the playoffs

AFC: Patriots - Stealers with Bill Coward eating another defeat

with San Diego, Bufalo and the Colts in on the playoffs

Superbowl going to the Pats in an unprecedented 4 consecutive win.

Long leave the Chargers! :)

CJ, I was being sarcastic about the Dolphins winning the AFC East.

However, after today's win over the Denver Broncos I don't think they will finish last. :)

I have to admit I have never seen the Dolphins live and came close many times when Marino was playing.

But I see that the Dolphins will be in San Diego and I am very tempted to go to the game.

Shall we wager the winner?? :)

Like any real football fan, i will say DA BEARZZZ! will win it all this year !!! :p

Followed by... like it or not ... yup ... again... New England Pats. High percentage (boring) plays ... yup ... again and again. You have to respect them though cause they always find a way to win.

I like watching the Ravens D... they should have shopped for a better QB in the off-season.... Kyle Boller is not an NFL starting QB in any view...

Dallas should be interesting this year, if the get their top-rated D of 2 seasons ago and a re-energized Bledsoe helped by Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn and Peerless Price... with an amazing RB in Julius Jones

Wow... what is happening in Denver ?

Chargers all the way!!!!

I know, I know we have not stopped sucking one way or another since Winslow-Fouts-Corriel, I know, yet this year we may have a chance and we seem to be building up.

Hey BL I will take that wager, what do you want to bet?

Yes, I remember the Winslow-Fouts-Corriel era. One of the greatest games in NFL history was that Dolphins v. Chargers game a little over 20 years ago (double overtime).

It will be interesting to see their win-loss record before they play.

P.S. I like your Robin Williams quote, I have that concert on DVD and watch it over and over and laugh every time.

Actually the Miami at San Diego game is December 11th at 4:15 Eastern Time.

You may want to see the game in person, I hear it may be a little warmer in San Diego than Montreal in December.

Let's see how their records compare in December, I may have to give you some points since Miami will have a much better record in December. :D

I feel like I am posting too much on this thread. Any other merbites NFL fans???

Exploit their weakness and wait for their luck to run out.

FunLuver said:
For all of uuu's football fans out there ... how do we deal with Da Pats !? :D

What is their weakness? I think its their defense which is still pretty good. However this is NOT the same defense that won 3 super bowls in 4 years. Romeo Cornell is gone along with Charlie Weiss who is doing a spectacular job so far at Notre Dame. If the job Weiss is doing at South Bend is any indication of what the Patriots lost then the Pats' offense should be effected negatively to some extent, although at absolutely no loss for talent.

Go down the roster on their defense however and you'll find 5 Pro Bowlers, Ty Law, Ted Johnson, Teddy Bruschi, Lawyer Milloy, and Ted Washington all gone over the last two years. The only replacement that equals the player they lost is Rodney Harrison for Lawyer Milloy. That leaves 4 big pairs of shoes to fill. This is not a knock on how good they are and have been for the last 4 years but to say that the Patriots had an incredible run of luck with players selected through the draft and free agent acquisitions before and during their run of Super Bowl Victories would be a major understatement.

How many people ever dreamed that Tom Brady would become a hall of fame quarterback? I'll answer for those who are tempted to lie and say they thought that all along, absolutely no one ever thought Tom Brady would ever be as good as he is. Tom Brady himself would never have expected this to happen. Did he work hard and do his best? Absolutely. Does he deserve credit for what he has done? Absoutely. Can you call it an incredible stroke of luck for the Pats'? ABSOLUTELY.

Luck always runs out, just ask my Cowboys who won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years a decade before the Patriots. Injuries, free agency, age, coaching changes, and plain old bad luck chips away at a once powerful Dynasty and the next thing you know they are back in the Lottery. In a league with a hard salary cap where you can't buy an all star team every year, like a certain Baseball team we all know  , your teams success will always rely to a great extent on drafting good talent at key positions and building a good young team from scratch around that "star" talent. Hopefully keep them all healthy and happy so they can gel as a team and after several years reemerge from the ashes of the previous dynasty to win another title.

Give the Pats' all the credit in the world for making the selections they did when they had multiple high picks in the draft. In addition they were able to renegotiate several large contracts and get bargain deals on top talent through free agency as well. This enabled them to keep themselves under the cap and still acquire big time talent, most noticably last year with their addition of Corey Dillon who gave them the running game they lost when Curtis Martin left town for NY. Obviously there were quite a few guys who wanted to play for Belichick and get a shot at winning a title so they were willing to be a little more selfless than if they had signed somewhere else.

The Raider game last Thursday was closely contested till the 3rd quarter when multiple drive killing penalties sealed their fate as the Pats' capitalized on the Raiders' mistakes. Keep in Mind that the Raiders are not a very good team although Randy Moss gives them one of the premier deep threats in the league. Still the weakness of the Pats D was noticable as their secondary got burned on several big plays which just didn't happen last year. Tyrone Pool and Chad Smith, or whoever else they plan on plugging the gaping hole at corner with, are not going to cut it. They are average corners and will limit Harrisons' headhunting because he will be worried about missed assignments and mismatches against teams with several deep threats. Particularly the Colts. I just can't see Peyton Manning not picking them apart all day long.

If the Colts defense is as improved as they looked against the Ravens then they should be able to slow Brady and Co. enough to let Peyton and his receiving corps beat them. Any team with a good running game that can keep the Pats' offense off the field should have a shot at beating them. With Edgerrin James at RB and Peytons' air express the Colts' have everything they need to usurp the throne from the Pats'. That being said I think the Pats' will easily make the playoffs with 12 victories and another Division title. Once there however they could go out at the hands of the Steelers as well as the Colts. No amount of Belichick coaching magic can save the Pats' if they don't have good enough talent to stop the premier offense in the league. All dynasties must fall eventually and the Pats' are living on borrowed time.

Cowboys will wallop the Redskins Monday night. Mark it down, its a lock.
The Boys have absolutely owned the Skins for the past 6 years, I see no reason in Washington to think this game will be anything other than a cakewalk. Now that I've said that however the Boys' will probably lose  on a last second field goal, LOL! Seriously though, I can't think of a better bet this week.

Pats are not a dynasty and can be beaten !!!!!!

since when 3 titles out of 4 years is a dynasty ????

the Cowboys of the 1990's had much better squads than today Pats, won 3 out of 4... and they WERE NOT a dynasty. the 90's Cowboys destroyed their opponents in the big game, the Pats squeak it out with 3-point wins.

it takes at least four titles to achieve such a label, just like the Packers of 60's, Steelers of the 70's and 49ers of the 1980's.

the Pats first title, they had no business being in the Super Bowl since they were saved by a terrible call called the tuck rule in the snow agt. the Raiders. Brady fumbled that ball, end of story.

their weaknesses:

1-good pair of safeties, but every average corners without Law. a 4 or 5-WR set does the trick on 1st and 2nd downs...
2-vulnerable to the run with 2 new inside LB's. the Raiders ran right at them on MNF and they had to switch to a 4-3 to hide that weak spot. a running team like the Steelers will exploit that if Roethlisberger can avoid the rookie mistkaes he made in the AFC Title game.
4-Corey Dillon is a good RB, but his predictable running style (never never runs inside the tackles outside of goal line plays) with off-tackle plays and counters outside the tackles will catch up
4-their punter Josh Miller is a liability on special teams. shanks too many punts and leaved good field position to opposing teams.

with tehri soft shcedule, the Colts will get home field advantage for the playoffs and put the Pats on a downward trajectory in a dome game.

How we distroy the Pats!

First we get Tom Brady kidnaped by alliens and have him continuosly proctally examed in the name of intergalatic peace, who knows he migth even get a taste for it.

Second, we offer Bellichick a lucrative contrat to head the St-Petersburgh Ballet Company in an amazing tour of the Mongolian High deserts interpreting their loved production of I love Lucy to the theme of Swan in the Lake. A 3 year contract with Mongolian Beef and Kompau Chicken as bonuses should make the deal happend.

Third we get Parcells, Dungy and any other semi decent coach in the NFL to straigth teams up, get the egos out of the game, Owens (self promoting) types should be banned to play with themsleves :D until they can play nice with the other kids.

Fourth, we change the rules to allow 14 men on the field on defense when playing against the Pats. Pass interference will only apply if the defendor is wearing a NE uniform or if the head of the receiver has left his body before the ball makes it to him. Unnecessary roughness will be penalized with a Shame on You and you get a 5 second head start on hail Maries into the end zone.

Or we can all wait for next year......

Hey AOD,

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but if you ask any NFL player or coach to name the teams they considered to be dynasties you would invariably hear the Cowboys and Patriots, along with the 49'ers, Steelers, and Packers. Some would even include Joe Gibb's Redskins who won 3 big ones in the span of a decade even though not 3 in 4 years.

The argument about the Brady tuck rule is certainly a good point but does not change the fact that they still had to win that game and then went on afterwards, won the AFC title game and beat the best team the NFC had to offer in the Super Bowl. You have to give them credit for doing what they had to do to win. Same thing could be said for their other Super Bowl victories, close games, but won by the Pats'.

I would agree with your assessment in regards to the "domination factor" although in the end all that matters is that you won. I am not a Pats' fan but I admire excellence when I see it. 3 Super Bowl victories in 4 years was never achieved by any of the other teams which we agree are dynasties, Steelers, Packers, 49'ers. The Cowboys were the first and the Pats' now have duplicated the feat. Most football fans feel that makes them a dynasty.

For the Cowboys I would also point out that they have not won just 3, but 5 Super Bowl titles, more than anyone save the 49'ers. In addition they have been to 8 Super Bowls total, more than any other team, period. The 3 Super Bowls they lost, 2 to Pittsburgh and 1 to Baltimore were by a COMBINED point total of 11 points. What does that mean. Well, when Dallas has been in the Super Bowl and lost, it was by the closest of margins but when they won 5 Super Bowls they absolutely blew out their opponents for the most lopsided points margin in the history of the big game outside of the 49'ers.

Over the history of the Super Bowl Era the Dallas Cowboys are hands down THE most successful NFL franchise, period. Arguably an ONGOING dynasty better describes the Cowboys. Americas' team, you either love them or hate them, but you know even when they are bad that it is only a matter of time before they will be back on top. They are the equivalent of the Yankees', Canadiens', and Lakers in their respective sports.

Steelers were the most dominant team

Abe,

as much as the Cowboys have a long history of winning, the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970's were the most dominant team I ever saw, period.

they beat the Cowboys TWICE in the Super Bowl. And in SB XIII in Miami, the Steelers were ahead 35-17 in the 4th quarter and let Dallas score two garbage touchdowns with 8 minutes to go in the game by playing prevent defense.

they have a load of players in the Hall of Fame (Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Stallworth, Webster, Greene, Ham, Lambert, Blount), not to mention their coach Chuck Noll and founder Art Rooney.

these are the dynasties of the NFL, and the Patriots DO NOT BELONG in there until they win a fourth title... and they won't !!!!!! their run of luck is about to end when the Colts get over the hump with a playoff rematch indoors.

1940's: Chicago Bears (1940, 1941, 1943, 1946)
1950's: Cleveland Browns (10 straight championship games from 1946 to 1955)
1960's: Green Bay Packers (5 NFL titles, 2 Super Bowls)
1970's: Pittsburgh Steelers (4 Super Bowls in 6 years)
1980's: San Francisco 49ers (4 Super Bowls in 9 years)

Dallas could be classified as one on the long... missing the playoffs once between 1966-1983 is impressive.

Are you a Steelers Fan?

AngelOfDeath said:

So if the Cowboys would have recovered that onside kick and scored one more "garbage" touchdown they would have won a "garbage comeback?" Ask the Steelers if they were thinking that Dallas' comeback was garbage. Bradshaw is on the record along with many other Steeler greats as saying that they were very concerned and trying to get everyone to wake up and realize that the game wasn't over til time expired. Both Steeler victories over Dallas were by 4 points. Would you then make the same criticism of them as you did of the Patriots for winning close games? Just being objective thats all.

The Steel Curtain has my utmost respect, but its hard to compare these different teams and say which was better and who is and is not a dynasty. Believe me, I'm sick of hearing about the Pats', but how do you argue against what they have done and not look like you are basing your arguments on anything other than personal animosity towards them when all the facts back up their place in history?

BTW Cowboys exacted their revenge on the Steelers in 95'. How sweet it was, to beat them to a 5th title!
