There's been some big moves by many FA's early in the market but I have to say my favorite signing so far was Toronto inking the absolutely horrid defenseman Hal Gill from the Bruins for 3 years. Good RIDDANCE! What were the Leafs thinking? I've been dying to see the B's get rid of this nuisance for 3 years and they've finally done so.

Well, they had to sign someone to replace Aki Berg.

I.E. - a big, useless, slow footed defenseman

Which makes it surprising they kept knucklehead Wade Belak!

I was also sad to see that they resigned useless and slow-footed Nik Antropov yesterday.

That is bad news for Leafs fans everywhere.

But it could be worse. Will Jason Allison be back? Is there anyone in the NHL who skates slower ??

Rangers

Watch out for the Rangers. They have an outstanding young goalie and just added a terrific veteran in Shanahan who will really help with the leadership of the team.

That's also an acknowledgment that as productive as Jagr has been for the NYR, his leadership skills in the locker room are lacking.

The Rangers are starting to resemble the Leafs of last year.....old and slow. Shanahan is 37, i believe, and his best years are past him. Maybe Gary Roberts will wind up with the Rangers, after all....the Leafs don't want a guy his age on their team.

Habs were hoping to sign Shanny.....i wonder who's on their radar now.

Shanny did the Habs a favor by not signign with them.
Apperently the habs offer was superior to the rangers!
I,m not unhappy at all by not having a finished veteran coming to Montreal to end his carreer. We had Gilmour and Juneau in the past and they were both flops that kept younger players either in the minors or sidelined.
Let,s keep the $$$ for better and younger players.
Leave the oldtimers to the Rangers.

Cosmo,

Excuse me but Brendan Shanahan scored 40 goals last year, for the team that had the best record in hockey.

And yes he took far less money from the Rangers than the Habs offered him. The Rangers have a better team. They have some very good young talent and are the hardest working team in hockey. With Lundqvist in goal that team is going places.

The latest rumor has Gainey trying to deal for Simon Gagne of the Flyers but the Flyers' asking price is too steep: Kovalev, Ribeiro and a 2007 high draft pick. No freakin' way! That would be a terrible trade for the Habs. The Habs need a scoring forward to supplement Kovalev not to replace him!

Yeah 40 goals last year, how much this year?
When you're 24, a year more doesn't change much,but when you,re 37 going 38,a year more does change a lot.
As for the Wings and Rangers their season ended the same time as the Habs.
So much for hard working and best record in hockey.
Nothing against Shanny, but I still believe we can do better w/o him.
Now let's go and get some real reinforcements.

Thanks but no thanks, lets face it the Canadiens are not on the brink of being a legitimate Cup contender only 1 veteran player away from winning it all... I don't think Shanahan would be a good fit at all in Montreal (no offence I like Shanahan) but at 37 this team just isn't built for guys like him.

Maybe picking up a guy like Samsonov (at a reasonable price) would help...

Hey maybe Gainey does read the board  Habs signed Samsonov yesterday to a 2 year deal worth 7 million!

Thanks for listening Bob, if you need any further help this off season you know where to find me :D

...Any word on the schedules release date? Last year it was July 27 at noon. Wondering if it will be sooner this year since there was no strike. A "must know" if you want to get first crack at tickets.

No idea about tix, but.... the sched's out. :D

I think Shanny would have helped the Habs, who have many good young players on the way up. Certainly a terrific veteran and a leader.
We will see if he still has some gas in the tank......... with the Rangers!

Samsonov

Spin:

Looks like GM Gainey reads the MERB after all. Good call on Samsonov!
Not too shabby a UFA signing, just pray he stays healthy and remembers to pass the puck once in a while! :) How many goals will he score for the Habs?

Nice call, Spin. I like this signing. Samsonov is not a big guy but he's fast and he creates scoring opportunities upfront. He's played with Kovalev in Russia too so there's chemistry and that will only help Kovalev become even more of a scoring threat.

Samsonov with the Habs

Samsonov is a great pick-up by the Habs, much better than Shanahan ever would have been. The guy can fly!! Not only fly, but he can score also!

Lindros

EB:

Eric Lindros shouldn't be playing NHL hockey at all. His many concussions are serious and they are cumulative. Think of a milder version of Ali ("pugilist dementia") down the road. Too risky IMHO
It is sad and unfortunate, but Lindros has really suffered a career-ending injury: it didn't happen in one shot, but several.

Peca signs with the Leafs

Leafs signed Mike Peca today. This is why they couldn't sign Lindros. I'm glad Peca is with the Leafs, but i can't figure why they signed Antropov for $1 million instead of letting him go and keep Lindros. Lindros, at least, has talent and he's not a bad skater. He also has leadership qualities. Antropov has been a bust, can't skate, can barely score, no leadership, and he's more injury-prone that Lindros. How well...life is never boring in Leafs Land!
