as a relatively new convert to the montreal sp/mp scene, i have become very interested in the number and demographics of those who visit mps/sps in montreal. i have very little sense of this since i only know one other person who visits sps (an old friend from high school). Of course, this is not a topic that i freely discuss with my colleagues at work or others in my community. i wonder if there are any surveys out there (seems like it might be good for at least one masters or maybe even phd thesis.) in terms of numbers, i see that this board has about 27,000 members. when i check the number of individuals viewing the board, i usually see that there are about 10 times more guests than members. does this mean that over a period of time there are close to 300,000 individuals viewing this board?? if so, how does this translate into the number that actually visit sps/mps in montreal-- anyone have any solid ideas of what the numbers actually are? of course the demographics of this group would be very interesting. has this board ever done a survey to determine our professions, incomes etc.?

We know there are people of all ages and all trades visiting MPs and SPs. We have no solid idea of the number of clients, neither, as a matter of fact, the number of providers. Police and Stella have estimates only for street prostitutes and, to a far lesser degree, their clients. Researchers think they represent no more than 8 to 15% of SPs in Montréal, even less if you consider all sex workers, adding MPs, strippers, etc. We have nothing close to statiscally valid numbers for the rest. It is impossible to draw samples from a population we can’t identifie because it operates underground.

27000 is the number of presumably different people who registered with merb at any time since its opening in 2003. Nothing else. Most of them are not active anymore on the board and they are not all clients: some were and are not anymore, some are just sneaking in for different reasons. The immense majority have never written a message on the board. So you can’t use the 1/10 ratio the way you did. There was an average of 12000 daily visits on merb this month. https://merb.cc/stats/ Carefull : many people visit the forum more than once a day.

Are these visitors representative of clients in general? Hard to say. Suppose they are. They than constitute a sample. What is great also is that you have polling system built in the vbulletin used for this board. The problem you ll face is getting a good enough rate of participation of your sample. You will rarely get more than30 respondents and won’t be able to control the very probable bias of selection in the final sample.

Estimations of active clients are very difficult to get. If you seach a little bit you ‘ll find some results of national samples in the USA and Europe with aproximations of % of men who had paid for sex with SPs at least once in their life. Ratios vary a lot from sample to sample in developed countries, between 8 and 20% (Germany) if I remember well.

I think one of the reasons it appears there are so many guests compared to registered members is that many of us who are registered members often browse the site as a guest without logging in.

It means that if you keep writing in this fashion.... you'll probably have 10 times more people reading only part of your post and giving up on reading more and ... not getting any reply ! Unless once in while you get one merbite who have fun in posting stupid 'replies' like I just did :)

You never know who is in the biz or who is the paying client. A few years ago I saw a girl at a coffee shop logging in to this site. She was 19 or 20 years old. I could only imagine she was checking her own reviews.

montreal or costa rica baby
Thats quite a curious question you got there?
If your from new york? Why the concern for montreal?
A survey on johns profession, and income is a bad idea.....
And besides.. What about all the old school guys that dont even log on the web, and call the newspaper ads?( there are insane amounts of newspaper ads..)
You cant get a good number based on merb stats.?

gugu,

thanks for the well thought out answer. you have made some good points and i guess the bottom line is that it is difficult to make any estimates. i was interested in the numbers in montreal since clearly, a lot more participate in this activity in montreal than in the states. of course the reasons are obvious----you pay top dollar for some skeazy bitch in the us and risk being arrested. montreal is like heaven in comparison.

gll,

we don't have detailed statistics in Canada, but some other polls made around the world may help you understand many aspects of prostitution number wise. You you find such statistics on procon.org, one of the most reliable site on prostitution since it they make considerable efforts to estimate the validity of sources used. Their page on john's statistics is here: http://prostitution.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=004119

Gugu,

I'm surprised estimates for Germany (the Kapital of Kink) weren't included. I think they'd probably be up there next to Italy and Spain. China's numbers seem a bit low, given the fact that they have a woman shortage.

Gugu,

About Germany, this is probably because of reliabily or translation problems. In Wiki, it is said that; "From other studies, it is estimated that between 10% and 30% of the male adult population have had experiences with prostitutes.[4] Of those 17-year-old males in West Germany with experience of intercourse, 8% have had sex with a prostitute.[4]" But when you search the cited reference, you find out that it contains no such numbers, neither any reference studies about it. By the way, Wiki articles about prostitution are loaded with such reference problems and datas not supported by evidences. I am quite certain that this is due to intervention of the abolitionists in the writing of the articles: they are specialists in the pure creation of data and of fantasy inferences made from available data. One of the main "thinkers" of the abolitionists in Canada, Richard Poulain, a teacher at the University of Ottawa, regularly commits such frauds ( Iuse the word fraud because he damn well knows what he's doing).

I don't know anything about prostitution in mainland China. My first hand guess (for what it's worth...) on what you say would be that if we follow the classic theory about the incompatibility of reproductive sex (marriage) and sex for money (prostitution) a woman shortage would naturally favor the first.
