New rules for 2014-15 NHL season

NEW YORK -- Repeat offenders for diving and their coaches will face increasingly steeper fines as part of a series of rule changes announced by the NHL.

Starting with players' fourth diving offenses, coaches will begin getting fined, too. Other rules changes announced by the league on Thursday focus on overtime, shootouts, penalties, video review, faceoffs and the trapezoid behind the net.

In shootouts, coaches no longer have to submit a list of their first three shooters. Players are also no longer able to do a "spin-o-rama" on penalty shots or in a shootout. In an effort to cut down on shootouts, there will be a dry scrape of the ice before overtime, something that was previously done before shootouts.

Teams will also change ends in overtime to make line changes from the defensive zone harder.

The trapezoid behind the net in which goaltenders can touch the puck will be expanded by two feet, something the NHL Players' Association recommended to make it safer for defensemen.

An MRI on the shoulder of Detroit Red Wings centre Pavel Datsyuk has revealed a second-degree separation and the 36-year-old will be sidelined for four to five weeks.

Datsyuk was taken hard into the boards by Penguins defenceman Rob Scuderi during the Red Wings' 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Monday.

"It's going to be around four weeks, give or take, depending on the healing process,'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on Wednesday.

Holland is optimistic based on the timing of the injury. "The good news is, two weeks of the healing process is going to be during pre-season," he added. "So half his time will be during training camp. That's at least good."

This is the third major injury for Datsyuk in the the last year. He missed seven games last season with a concussion and 30 more with a right knee injury.

Datsyuk is heading into his 13th NHL season.

Of course it's bad news for all of hockey when the most skilled player in the world misses some games.

Having said that, the good news is that Pav is improving rapidly and will soon be skating again...and soon after that undoubtedly amazing all hockey fans as only "The Magician" can:thumb:

I feel far more sorry for an aging defenceman named Robidas who will try to play this year despite having broken his leg twice and despite being a year or two older than (and obviously nowhere NEAR as talented as) Pav. The poor guy is probably only one hit or one fall away from a wheelchair. Give him credit for having the guts to take the chance, but it's really not a smart move.

Pre-season games are and always have been relatively meaningless except as a way for players to show their potential.

Thus it was very encouraging to see Peter Mrazek with a shutout as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0.

Although Detroit was largely staffed by AHL players, these young guys proved that the team has a future that might soon match its glorious past.

True, beating the Leafs - even in a pre-season game - hardly ranks as a major achievement but it WILL be a major achievement if Detroit management sees the light and brings Mrazek up to PERMANENTLY replace Jimmy Howard. (Sadly for the Leafs, Toronto's future looks like a lot more of the same old same old. Oh well - can't win 'em all.)

Colton Orr was put on waivers this morning

It's about time!

(But how will the Leafs ever replace the zero goals, zero assists and zero points he put up for them last season? Especially since McLaren, who ALSO posted triple zeroes last season, was ALSO put on waivers.)

It is definately a possibility but I am fine if he clears waivers, that way he can be brought up when the Leafs go against boston or some of the tougher teams in the west.

I hope someone picks him up

Best Regards

Orr has never been the same since he took down parros when george hit his head on the ice and that was also the end of parros for the most part...., the NHL is moving away from enforcers especiially more so the last 4-5 seasons.

This is true......there has been a decline in the "pure goon" of yesteryear and more of the hybrid goon, guys who can fight but also have some meager hockey skills as opposed to none at all. The guys like Georges Laracque are all but extinct now. I heard Laracque in an interview in retirement say that he knew if he did not fight he would not get contracts, but it appalled and disgusted him to do what he did. He essentially prostituted his violence. Such guys are disappearing.
