Sweden is playing without Henrik Sedin, Henrik Zutterberg and Nicklas Backstrom. How can they expect to win without those 3 guys? Is this even a fair fight?

Injuries are a part of sports, good teams play thru them and do not use them as an excuse. They have to have a next man up attitude.

It only makes sense that losing three top players on a team doesn't change anything about their chances of winning against anyone especially one of the toughest opponents. Really????? C'mon pal. Injuries matter, sometimes they're critical. It's still a fantastic win, but let's not be deny reality.

Anyway, congratulations to team Canada on winning the gold. Now there won't be the same national identity crisis the Russians are suffering through.

Price was priceless... a 0 .5 goals against average in 6 games.

BTW, Russia won the over-all medal count....I wonder if the majority of Russians would have traded that honor for a gold in hockey?

AND Johan Franzen!

BTW, correct spelling of the best leader in hockey is Zetterberg.

Price only played in 5 of the 6 games...but his stats were pretty amazing: 5-0, a 0.59 goals against average, 3 goals against on 106 shots, and shutouts in both the semi-final and final games.

MVP for Canada?

I say it's a tie...between Mike Babcock and the great Steve Yzerman. Team Canada had talent and depth (credit to Stevie) and was by FAR the best-coached (credit to Babs).

Player MVP: A toss-up between Carey Price and Drew Doughty.

Golden goal: Jonathan Toews.

Biggest downside: season end for John Tavares...but an Olympic gold medal probably gives him a fair amount of consolation.

Congrats to Canada !!!

From what I saw, both Rick Nash and Jeff Carter played fantastically....

Glad Subban was scratched

Sweden looked as flustered as the USA did the other day

Swift returns to both John Tavares and Mats Zuccarello....

Best Regards

Cloudsurf,

"The majority"? We know Russia is one of those countries that unfortunately links part of their identity to hockey and act like they would rather chew off a leg than lose. I'm sure Vodka sales are through the roof right now. I saw the stunning performance of Adelina Sotnikova in women's figure skating. That victory alone should give as much pride. It's too bad that even though this gold medal win is fabulous some Russians will be contemplating suicide for losing the hockey gold, and this time not even a medal.

 Oh c'mon, that's hypocritical. Do you think your players just sprout from the womb with sticks and blades. Poor mama. It's delusional if you don't think oodles of $$$ from kindergarten to the pros that would make even the Americans blush don't go into Canadian hockey. There are 5000 outdoor rinks and almost 2700 indoor, most in the world...$Ka-Ching$. The U.S. has less than 2000 Total. That doesn't change anything about the the great Canadian win. But don't cry about U.S. spending Canada eclipses HUGE.

I'd like to a big shout out to the tiny countries of Norway (5 million) and the Netherlands (17 million) who finished 3rd and 5th in the medal count (2nd and tied for 5th respectively in gold medals).

Congratulations,

Merlot

Congrats to Australia for their 3 medals.
If I`m not mistaken , they are the only southern hemisphere country to medal.
Not impressed with Argentina and Chile ....they have ice, snow and mountains but no medals.

Opps forgot to say it !! Congratulations!! Go Canada!!
=_)

American way is :) You don't argue with success!!!!

NOW what we really have to do is spend some money fixing our Croissants... If I had to choose between a good croissant and losing olympic gold.. i'd go with the croissant.

(quite sad.... that WINTER olympics is even a bigger tale of have and have nots.. Mexico got 1 lonely guy there.. He'd have a Better time if they sent him to Montreal)

Gents,

MVP for Canada?

When the same guy Iggy (egg on face) constantly calls Carey "Red Light" Price goes "0 .5 goals against average in 6 games", there's the best argument for MVP.

The way you see Russia reminds me Rocky IV ;)

:D

Yeah, it is funny. Those crazy propaganda type hyper nationalist movies like "Rocky IV, Rambo, Red Dawn, Missing In Action" and many other 80s and 90s movies are ridiculously awful with stereotyping crap. I know that how I'm saying it is over the top...a little bit, but I read some Russian papers and OMG you should read how they are portraying this loss. The impression they give is pretty much as described. It gets close to appearing like the 911 attacks happened to them.

http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2014...e-russia-s-olympic-hockey-loss-in-stride.html

Here's one of the of the much more lighthearted Russian blogs form the "Moscow News" at the time of the game. It's oddly funny, but the bitterness creeps in anyway:

Russia-Finland about to begin. We'll be keeping an eye on the proceedings. #Hockey is sacred, after all. #Sochi2014
7:25 AM - 19 Feb 2014

GOAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!! Yeah Russia! Kovalchuk just scoooooooooooored! #hockey #Sochi2014
7:50 AM - 19 Feb 2014

Oh dear. 1-1. Finland equalizes. #hockey #Sochi2014
7:52 AM - 19 Feb 2014

Great. Tereshenko in the penalty box. Russia outnumbered yet again. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:00 AM - 19 Feb 2014

OH FOR GOD'S SAKE. 2-1. Finland scores. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:06 AM - 19 Feb 2014

1st period over. Finland leads Russia 2-1. Time for a meditation break. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:11 AM - 19 Feb 2014

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. 3:1 Finland scores again. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:33 AM - 19 Feb 2014

Is anyone else missing Bobrovski right now? Because we are. We are missing Bobrovski. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:34 AM - 19 Feb 2014

We remind everyone that if Russia loses this - they won't medal. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:35 AM - 19 Feb 2014

The coach has heard our lamentations! Bobrovski is back in goal! Varlamov out! #hockey #Sochi2014
8:37 AM - 19 Feb 2014

How long do you think it will take for Russia to ban Finnish vodka? Just pointing out the obvious here. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:40 AM - 19 Feb 2014

They just showed a really sad Russian boy in the stands. We feel your pain, little boy. #hockey #Sochi2014

Ovechkin's girlfriend also looking sad in the stands. SIGH. We are humming "Show Must Go On," personally. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:53 AM - 19 Feb 2014

The 2nd period is over. Finland leads Russia 3:1. Don't mind us. We're going to go have a stiff drink. #hockey #Sochi2014
8:56 AM - 19 Feb 2014

The 3rd period is upon us. We are eating ice cream and watching Russia struggle against Finland. #hockey #Sochi2014
9:17 AM - 19 Feb 2014

At least Bobrovski is a class act today. We love you, Sergei. And want to have your babies. #hockey #Sochi2014
9:39 AM - 19 Feb 2014

Russia, you are breaking our heart. Or cutting it out with a dull spoon. Or something equally horrific. #hockey #Sochi2014
9:44 AM - 19 Feb 2014

Even this is much more civil than our hockey threads.

Once again...CONGRATULATIONS CANADA. You got through the best the world had to offer...men and WOMEN...and WON!!!

AWESOME! :thumb:

Agree 100%.

Also you forgot to mention the biggest upside: ABSOLUTELY NO LEAFS PRESENCE ON OR OFF THE ICE. Definitely the key to Canada's success. :D

Congrats to Canada on Gold in Hockey and in the overall standings! Canada at the Olympics have come a long way in recent games.

Yes Lily it is over but that also means back to NHL Hockey! These two weeks w/o it have seemed like 2 years to me.
It's over...snif... beautiful closing ceremony,a bit heavy on discourse but ...and we won for men and women for the two canadian important events, hockey and curling! Go Canada lol
