Johanne Paquin, responsible at the SPVM for tracking prostitution, announced her retirement yesterday. Cops are usually not appreciated by most actors on the sex work scene, but I think her balance sheet is largely positive. She had a good knowledge of the issues and of the industry. She was a wise strategist. She had to deal with the new prostitution law, with the public statement of Coderre who was to close the massage parlors, with the pressure of the prohibitionists both directly and through the elected representatives and with some RCMP strategies that were not in line with the SPVM approach. She was mainly concerned with the security of the sex workers. Under her direction, the SPVM has put the energy where it counts: minors and violent pimps. Kudos to her.
