while we are on the subject of how safe montreal is :D

saturday april 19 (this saturday jsut past) 7.30 am exiting the metro lionel groux 14 cop cars yes 14 screach up and all the cops get out and run inside
does anyone know what happened?

they only seem to report what they have no choice to like if the beating of 2 white males but a gang of blacks was not on video and so in the public eye maybe it would not have been in the paper?
oliver

Ollie,

You were exiting the Lionel Groulx metro station so from the platform to the only exit did you notice anything that would require such a police presence?
I'll even give you the 3-5 minutes response time but this compounds things since you would have been inside the station.

You were there.

Probably the 7:00 AM donut delivery to the outlet in the station.

Whoa man, take it easy. Montreal is a very safe city and the risks that you are exposed to coming here are extremely small.

These are one off situations that almost never occurs. The last riot occured in 1993 after the Habs won the Stanley Cup I believe.

Damn right; no need to panic, those wannabe rioters were just amateurs who should ask their cousins in France for some tips!

Seriously, check the videos, and you'll notice that there was very little violence, one or two guys banging on the police car and lots of bystanders who were not threatened in any way.
Even the guys with Bruins shirts didn't get hurt. Montreal is still safe, just avoid going too close to burning police cars.

Gentlemen...please keep things civil and on topic. Let's avoid the personal attacks before someone gets suspended. This is my only warning.

M8

EDIT: Thread cleaned. Any continuation of this behaviour, either on the board or via PM will be met with stern suspensions for the instigator. Grow up or be banned!

Riot Update.

Various news reports in the press clearly indicate that certain elements used the Canadiens victory to target certain businesses. Three of the business
ransacked were the SAQ, American Apparel and Reebok. Booze and the trendy wannabe look being the targets.

The link with Canadiens fans is somewhat weak as the Bell Center boutique was not targeted.

This from CP:

The overall level of organization may have been somewhat relative. One merchant said looters walked off with 14 displayed high-end running shoes - all of them for the left foot.

Not surprising. Every criminal that gets caught never figured that it would happen. They all think they are committing the perfect crime.

Explanation

Korbel said:
Hello Doc,

Great post.

The character of too many people these days is so poor. The thug mentality rules them. Among them, reason, principal, and respect are gone. When challenged they find courage among their fellow creatures. Their only rationale is the depths of barbaric venom. Threats are the manner of their "honor". Their only justification is the right of self-indulgence. They seek excess, and respect nothing and no one. Their only goal is to serve their vices. They are akin to animals.

Only,

Korbel

So this would explain why fans of one team refer to fans of another team with expletive filled vulgarities. Does someone referring to a fan of another team as a ******* moron have strong character, use reason, show respect,
stand on principal or does such a person exhibit a thug mentality?

Does such a person show courage by asking others to stop or do they go with the crowd and hurl their own vile invictive justifying their barbaric behavior by their team's fleeting success?

Words and deeds, Korbie.

No Accusation.

Korbel said:
Sadly,

Aside from commiting the error of a misplaced accusation, it seems the intuitive understanding that principles are or should be universal for the same actions regardless of which side anyone is on just plain eludes some. I choose to forgive such an obvious incapacity to concieve of this very simple idea as not all can..."get it."

excused, ;)

Korbel

No accusation at all. Just an outline of "alleged fans" using vulgarities and a question asking which side of the line are you on.

Are you the same Korbel who started: "The Joe. t Memorial FM Stupid Bets Thread" ?

Anyone who follows the baseball thread knows what FM stands for.

Don't forget the purpose of such "coke bottle bottom glasses" is to make the world clearer for the wearer. Some peoples desperately need to wear a pair of these but they refuse...

i dont think you can rule out organsied crime to slip between the smoke and mirrors to steal
look at the places looted sportswear and liquor stores

I think you must mean that the looting was "organized" or planned ahead of time, not that there was an element of "organized crime" in the traditional (mafia, triad, hell's angels etc...) sense of the word. I don't think any of those actual "organized crime" organizations would be going ga-ga over a few pairs of sneakers and some wine...

The proper term is opportunistic crime. Your bottom rung criminals who cannot plan or organize a trip to the store but will steal a wallet from a purse left in a shopping cart by a distracted shopper.

Substance Abuse

oliver_kloseoff said:
i would say this problem has been growing for some time..
when i grew up in the 50's-kids respected their parents or the parents didnt spare the rod so to speak.if you were bad in public and a stranger kicked you in the ass if you cane home and told your parents they would give it to you as well.

in the school system in those days the teachers were in control and students listened or got the strap

in those days cops were 6'4 irishmen who weight on average was about 230 lbs

today kids are wild unruly and disrespectful in general..takle a bus or metro to see daily shows of public disorder.

oliver

Oliver,

The biggest problem to day is that the kids have easy access to drugs and alcohol. Most of their anti-social behavior stems from these two elements.

The teachers and school administrators did not have to deal with drugs and drinking on a daily basis until the early 1970's. Today it is a major concern, not only the kids but their parents.

Also the kids today are much bigger. In public it is often hard to tell a teen from an adult.

I agree with Oliver and Eastender concerning many kids these days....

I think it can be fairly put:

What is happening to our young
people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They
ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions.
Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?

... and yet, this is a quote from Plato (428/427 BC– 348/347 BC)! I would guess that each generation thinks like this of the next and yet somehow we seem to be able to plod along not too badly.

Distinction

johnhenrygalt said:
Many adults today have a very idyllic and selective memory when it comes to how much "respect" they and their generation showed while young.

I think a distinction has to be made between "earning" respect and "showing"
respect.

It's much easier to destroy than create....

It is an unfortunate commentary on today's society that anytime a large group gathers, whether for parade or protest, it seems to attract certain 'individuals' that have nothing but destruction on their agenda.

Remember the rioting after a canceled concert in 2003:

Sad but true...
