If they talk or not, there is still a mandatory minimum sentence in Australia for these crimes which are quite stiff.

Tamine and Roberge have delayed their trials until February, although it is not clear why:

http://www.torontosun.com/2017/08/2...n-cocaine-bust-have-trials-delayed-until-2018

Usually a defendant who has been sitting in jail for a year pushes for a speedy trial instead of pushing it off another 6 months, during which they will continue to rot in jail. One would think that if there is exculpatory evidence it should not take more than a year to find it. It also suggests to me no deal is in the works, because if there was, the Court would keep pressure on to finalize with a short trial date.

What will be interesting to see is if Roberge is tried and convicted, what her sentence will be in comparison to the one Lagace got by making a deal. Ditto with Tamine. The evidence may be greater against Lagace as far as her involvement, and against Tamine for his, but that does not mean Roberge might not end up with a longer sentence than Lagace did by rolling the dice on a trial. Some times when you roll the dice in court, you get hammered. Just saw it happen to the other side a few weeks ago in a case that should have been settled, with decent money left on the table. Instead, plaintiff was handed a quick defense verdict by the jury and also owes all her medical bills which are over $10,000. Greedy expectations shot down, big time.

If the defendant is certain of being convicted and being incarcerated, wouldn't it be good strategy to spend as much time in detention as possible before the trial as pre-trial jail time counts double?

Credit for time served in the USA is 1 for 1............do not know what the law is in Australia. But regardless of that, the whole point of having a trial is to win, and get out of jail, not to lose and get more time. If the strategy is that a loss is likely, you make a deal, or you get hammered. I go back to my prior post.......

I think these girls have no defense for their actions, they are guilty. Now the strategy should be to minimize the sentence.

We never know what strategy they are putting forth. Delaying it can mean many possibilities. I guess we will know during press releases.

Maybe a clue as to their up coming sentencing. .
Several young Canadians caught smuggling coke in suitcases, into Australia in 2015, were sentenced to terms of 6 to 7 and a half years.
Interestingly several employees of Vice Canada are accused of recruiting the smugglers

I think for the record amount they were smuggling they will get much more that 7 years. I am betting on 10+ years.

If it’s true that they got a sentence of 6-7 years, I would say they were extremely lucky. I am all for more lenient sentencing on people that have small amounts of illicit drugs on them for personal use (provided they’re given an opportunity to go to rehab), but drug smugglers should be dealt with harshly. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a victimless crime.

personaly possession shouldnt even land you in jail honestly.

And not a victimless crime? Well you decide if you drug yourself or not ...

Alchool is the same as drugs, its addictive, fuck you up, cause many deaths a year (drunk and driving) and yet its legal. They tried to ban it but it didn't work.

You should be free to drug yourself just as you are to drink alchool, its your body. And thats a drug free person speaking here.

I really hope they get very very light sentence. 10+ years would be way too much. And its not cause there cute ladies. If it was 2 dudes i would say the same.

Yes, drug smuggling is not a victimless crime and it has nothing to do with deciding whether or not to take drugs. It's all the other crimes that it brings such as robberies, murders, extortion, etc. I have no sympathy for those girls, they knew what they were doing and they were brazen enough to try to bring a large amount of drugs not into their own country but into a foreign one.

I will bet you they thought they would never get caught and live happily ever after splashing around in huge piles of money.

Or they would have disappear in sleeping bag with cement down the Australian sea... Or just be given to the shark. Do not deal with drug gang. If you could be a nuisance once the deal is done, you wont last long... Un humain est juste du bétail pour eux...

haha I think 7 years is perfect if not a bit severe for a first offense innocent (read here a bit stupid) person that hopefully learned a fucking hard lesson about life.

Cheers,

I don't know what Melina Roberge will do. She pleaded not guilty and her trial is set to start in february 2018.
I think she should plea guilty right now... if she decides to have a trial and is found guilty she will probably have a bigger sentence.
