Instead of buying a new $1,000 iPhone I was considering picking up an older refurbished or remanufactured one. Amazon has them, was curious if anyone has had success with them or anybody else. I’ve seen phones on backmarket.com but never used them. Any help would be appreciated.

FWIW I’ve bought plenty of my Apple stuff directly from Apple in the refurbished section of the site, never had issues. Ymmv.

I bought a refurbished phone off amazon. Was a couple of years back though. I think it was a 6s. Can't remember the seller, but in my case I didn't have a problem. Condition of the phone was good and the battery was pretty good. I don't recall any specific issues with it. YMMV though.

I've upgraded again since then.

Look behind you.
Bestbuy has refurbished items which I try to find if they have a certain product I want. Most are new, customer found a fault and returned it, fixed and discounted with full warranty.

Also to note, Black Friday is soon. two years ago my daughter got the i-phone 10xr for a very good price and we got a new term for lower than our old one.

I would recommend a used iPhone from either 1) Apple or 2) Gazelle.com.

I bought a "new" iPhone 6 from Amazon. It stopped working a couple months later. I took it to an Apple store and their diagnostics showed that I was the FOURTH owner of this "new" phone. Amazon would not refund me because the original merchant "disappeared".
I ended up getting a $75.00 trade in on a REAL NEW iPhone 7. I will only buy from an Apple store. When my 2 year warranty on my iPhone 7 expires, I will upgrade to a SE, again, only from an Apple store.

I wouldn't buy poo from Amazon, much less "new" iPhones.
