So I've been asked to pick a restaurant for a date this week. Somewhere nice and classy, but I don't want to choose anything ridiculously expensive. Downtown or Old Montreal area preferred.
I would love some suggestions...where would you go?

Look behind you.
I have tried a few of the better dining places and still prefer Gibbys and price is reasonable.

Gibby's is my favorite restaurant as far as a steak and contintental menu, but it is kind of crowded and noisy, tables are packed together, and there is a lack of privacy and intimacy needed for dates.

The place I have taken dates to is D'Emma, an Italian restaurant in Old Montreal. It's pricy, although not ridiculously so, and the menu is all in Italian on a chalkboard so you will have to rely on the waiter for a proper translation, unless you speak and read Italian on a functional level. What I like about D'Emma is the ambience, which is more private and intimate, with tables spread out and the lighting dimmed creating a more romantic atmosphere.

Not as good as Gibby's or D'Emma is the Keg steakhouse. It's got a more convenient downtown location, but tends to be very crowded.

There is also a Polish restaurant called Stash Cafe in Old Montreal, which is serving authentic Polish food. They have been reviewed by Rachel Ray, and I went there because of the Rachel Ray review which I discussed with the owner. The food is very good, and not expensive. They also had someone playing on the piano thus creating the old country atmosphere.

I HIGHLY. Recommend Kyber Pass (afghan resto) bring your own wine.

It's very intimate and the food is great. It's on Duluth.

You have to try the Ochra (or it it Okra?)

Let me know if you do go there. :)

I was also going to say the Keg. There's also one in the Old Montreal if I remember.

Another less conventional choice would be Casa Tapas on 266 Rue Rachel E. I was there about 5 years ago, but according to TA it is still racking up great reviews recently:

I would also try the restaurant thread, although much of the information there is old:

There are a few reviews posted from earlier this summer.

By the ways, one other place I forgot which is a hidden gem is Baguette d'Ivoire, 1242 Mackay, a fantastic Chinese-Thai-Vietnamese place. It's a small place but has a nice intimate atmosphere and the chef is highly imaginative. Best spicy beef with basil I have ever had. It's the house specialty.

As EB mentioned Casa Tapas is a nice little place but it's not in the areas you mentioned, but worth the drive.

Personally I really like Boris Bistro on McGill street, great food, reasonable prices & a fantastic outdoor terrasse/garden which would be perfect for a nice date if the weather cooperates.

Just to follow up on deboner's post I checked the Boris Bistro menu and it looks pretty good, here it is:

http://www.borisbistro.com/bb/menu/plats_eng.php

Usually bistros like this that have smaller menus do a smaller number of dishes, but do them all well.
It also seems like the place is not crushingly expensive, given its prime location.

The reviews on Yelp are mostly pretty good. If I succeed in getting the Delta Montreal on my next trip it will be a short walk away, and I may have to check it out.

Took my date to Casa Solmar at rue St-Paul and Vincent in Old Montreal. A really nice Portuguese seafood restaurant. It's upstairs on the second floor. Very private; with views of the street if you request to sit by the window. Enjoy!

Never again am I going to this place. I went there a few months back. There was some big green gob on the fork, and the fish smelled rotten. I just walked out.

Old Montreal..... at Hotel Neligan - Verses Restaurant. Oh how I love this place. Somewhat of a tourist trap I know. If $100 to $150 you don't find expensive then it would be a good restaurant. Thai Grill at 5101 St. Laurent is good just stay away from the dessert though but everything else is good. Ariel Restaurant formerly Caprice de Nicolas at 2072 Drummond near the Sofitel. Food is pretty good but the ambiance not as good when it was Caprice. It is brighter now and more contemporary and lacks that dark homey charm.

Although it's a chain restaurant, I like Baton Rouge...nice ambiance. There is one across the street from Place des Arts.

For me any restaurant that is somewhat dark or dominated by natural lighting with a quiet atmosphere is a great destination for a 4-hour dinner engagement.

Madison > Baton Rouge :D

I would agree. I give Madison the edge in food and ambience, but I would not take a date to either place. Although in the past I did bring ladies to Baton Rouge only because when you are staying at the Hyatt, it is conveniently only an elevator ride away. But I kind of lost respect for them over time.

For me any restaurant that is somewhat dark or dominated by natural lighting with a quiet atmosphere is a great destination for a 4-hour dinner engagement.

Exactly why I recommended D'Emma. Coupled with the Old Montreal location, it is the ideal destination for date.

I believe it was the old women's prison at one time, and the stone walls enhance the ambience.

Yes D'Emma is good too. In most cases you can't go wrong with any Old Montreal restaurant. Especially if it is attached/associated with an Old Montreal Hotel. Also Aix by Place D'armes is great too. I find their plating to be over the top though. Very attractive waitresses.

Now if someone mentions that hot dog joint next to Cleo's now we have a true winner! LOL.
