Gibby's is my favorite restaurant as far as a steak and contintental menu, but it is kind of crowded and noisy, tables are packed together, and there is a lack of privacy and intimacy needed for dates.
The place I have taken dates to is D'Emma, an Italian restaurant in Old Montreal. It's pricy, although not ridiculously so, and the menu is all in Italian on a chalkboard so you will have to rely on the waiter for a proper translation, unless you speak and read Italian on a functional level. What I like about D'Emma is the ambience, which is more private and intimate, with tables spread out and the lighting dimmed creating a more romantic atmosphere.
Not as good as Gibby's or D'Emma is the Keg steakhouse. It's got a more convenient downtown location, but tends to be very crowded.
There is also a Polish restaurant called Stash Cafe in Old Montreal, which is serving authentic Polish food. They have been reviewed by Rachel Ray, and I went there because of the Rachel Ray review which I discussed with the owner. The food is very good, and not expensive. They also had someone playing on the piano thus creating the old country atmosphere.
