Tunaking,

Just because of your name, I must inform you that Deville Dinerbar has the very best ahi tuna tacos I have ever had, served in a sweet crispy wonton tortilla with shredded cabbage and a wasabi mayo. It is simply delicious. If in fact u are a Tuna King, bring those Ahi Tuna Tacos onto your throne. They will be most delicious subjects.

I was in Montreal 2 weeks ago and took 3 friends there and one ordered the ahi tuna tacos and he told me they were the best he ever had, and he is no ahi tuna taco virgin. So it must be because it’s good? They are also the best ahi tuna tacos I ever had, and I am no ahi Tuna taco virgin either.

My friends also raved about Creperie St. Paul and Holder Restaurant and we all enjoyed D’Emma. I didn’t join in the meals at the other places.

Regarding Deville Dinerbar, it’s pricy and frequently labeled a tourist trap, but the food is very very good and I have had many things on their menu.

Do any of you have a recommendation for the upcoming MTL a table. Would like to visit some different places while in town next week. I have seen the list but it can be a little overwhelming to try and narrow it down to places quickly accessible from downtown via stm. Thanks in advance.

Very small menu, had the pork belly last time and it was good, will try the Mac & Cheese next time I'm in town.

Ok tried out the ahi tuna tacos. They were delicious . I can see why you like this place so much it’s pretty cool even though they are kinda pricey. Thanks for the recommendation might have to go back before my trip is done.

Tunaking,

I am happy you enjoyed them. I also like their Seoul Food Lettuce Wraps (mixture of Asian and Mexican cuisines, really good) and all of their salads, the Macho Deville being my favorite. I go there at least once every trip to Montreal and all of their food is good.

Honestly, all the downtown places are kind of pricey and many of them do not back it up with quality. Deville does, and even though they get accused and labelled as a tourist trap, it's mostly by locals who never have eaten there and don't venture into that tourist territory to take their meals. I am a tourist like you Tunaking, and you are like me, and you will never see from the locals posts like mine on Deville. The locals on this Board are not eating there and it is not on their radar or in their dining territory. That being said I am not afraid to venture outside downtown for good and less expensive meals, like the locals do exclusively. However sometimes, whether for weather reasons or other reasons, I like to stay close to the downtown core and that's when Deville Dinerbar always answers the bell for me. I have also had a few Seeking Arrangement dates there, and all the girls on SA know this place, so it's not like it's off the radar for the younger locals.

Tunaking,

One other thing to consider on downtown restaurant pricing. Since these restaurants are catering to out of towners, tourists and business travellers to the financial district, they bump prices up to both pay for the higher rent for being on Stanley near St Catherine (high traffic pedestrian area) and to calibrate with the wallets of the tourist consumers they are serving. I would be willing to bet that if you did an average pricing on downtown core restaurants vs. similar establishments in the eastern end, the rate of price inflation is roughly equivalent to the USA to Canadian exchange rate. In other words, although it's pricy in Canadian dollars, if you did the reverse exchange to translate the prices into American dollars, your paying at par a lower price for the food than you think. If you try and think of it that way. The $22 ahi tuna tacos are, in US dollars based on today's $1.27 exchange rate, $17.32. That is still pricy, but it tells you the true priciness you are paying for.

For those of you steakhouse affectionatos, much like myself, you can’t beat “The Keg”... :hungry:

You find the keg better than : Moishes , Rib'n Reef , Gibby's , Queue de cheval ?

I prefer Gibby's for steak. Moishes is good too but zero ambience. Keg would be well below these other two places. The Keg in the financial district near the Queen E has a nice bar scene but the steaks are not the best in town.

I think baton rouge in complexe desarjins makes a better steak than the keg

Haven’t been to Queue de cheval in a long time. Is it still open?

Changed locations, been a few times to new location, it's stupid expensive

Gibby’s offers a massive portion of meat (even their filet mignon kebabs are more than 2 meals for a hungry man), their Monte Carlo potatoes are superb, their house salad has the best house vinaigrette I have ever tasted, and I also like their complimentary Montreal style pickles. I never did order the Prime Rib at the Keg. I got their NY strip which was okay.

I have eaten at Gibby’s at least 12-15 times and never had a meal that was less than stellar there.

Beav,

The steaks may be good at Gibby's but holy fuck! It's like having dinner in an old folks home!

Look behind you.
Gibbys can not be compared to the Keg, yes Gibbys has a much older quiet crowd, probably somewhere you would want to go for an anniversary or meal with the family. I also agree with EB that the food quality is much better than the keg, not saying the Keg is bad but Gibbys is better, the Keg is also for a much younger crowd Just my opinion.

I agree 100%. Keg isn’t bad, Gibby’s is just better. Gibby’s does have more of a family oriented vibe but I have observed a very mixed crowd there, of all age groups. In any event I go there strictly to eat, not to socialize, other than with the group of friends I happen to go with.

Of all the steakhouses mentioned in recent posts, the place that has the worst ambience by far is Moishes. It makes Gibby’s look like the beer tent at Jazz Festival by comparison.
