The steaks at Gibby's and Moishes are simply horrible!...avoid like the plague!
Completely agree with this. I can seriously do better myself with sous vide and a skillet at home.

The steak at QDC are a level above these two establishments as well as the Keg and the pricing reflects that. What I do find annoying with QDC is that while their menu list many different cuts and origin, I've found out, during several visits, that they "ran out" of my selection.

Is this Joe Beef place worth the hype?
I think it's worth going once. It's pricey and was good experience but I wouldn't make too much effort to try to go again unless a last minute same day opening pops up.

Looking for good Greek restaurant... suggestions anyone?

I recall going to Marvens quite awhile ago; the food was good, not much for ambiance.

Agree on Milos, I think Jatoba is overrated, Montreal Plaza is great, Park is nice and there’s the staples of Toque and Chasse et Peche

Milos is an upscale Greek seafood restaurant . It has been rated amongst one of the best in Montreal for decades. Perhaps a bit overrated.
Is the food good? Yes , but it better be considering it’s pretty pricey. Do not highly recommend unless you really love Greek style seafood and like posh , fashionable , high end restaurants .

Coincidentally if you are looking for a great Greek restaurant that offers great value all you have to do is go across the street from where Milos is located and head to MYTHOS RESTAURANT.
There you will find great authentic Greek food . And unlike other upscale Greek restaurants this one is frequented by local Greek patrons ,,, and that should tell you all you need to know about this place.
Highly recommended but try not to go on Friday or Saturday nights because that’s when they have live music and it’s pretty loud . But then again a few glasses of wine and you might start to feel like Zorbas .

When in Rome do as .,,, ( frequented and popular by Greek patrons )
1) MYTHOS Restsurant is the place to go for decent ambiance and great Greek food . Mind you it ain’t cheap and try to avoid going there during the weekend unless you’re someone that enjoys the chaos of a Greek wedding.

2) The very popular Le jardin de Panos .
A Greek restaurant that offers great value . Very proper and clean establishment . For anyone who likes au Vieux Duluth or Casa Greque this one is very similar in that you can bring your own wine ,except the quality of food is much improved in my opinion. Also one of the most beautiful terraces in the plateau. The name says it all . Can’t go wrong with this place if you are looking for a good ,casual place to eat .

3)
There is also Fameux Gyros Elatos for anyone who likes pita sandwiches . It’s a very small restaurant located near Jarry/ Querbes . Mostly for take out as it’s not much for ambiance but still a very popular place for gyro or souvlaki pita with that hot garlic bite from tzatziki. Highly recommended especially for those who like Gyro pita
* But probably not the best thing to eat before a date ;)

Hope that helps

Was in New Hampshire for business and they call a smoked meat sandwich a “Montreal Reuben” there. Cracked me up. They are serving it on marbled rye with Swiss cheese, mustard and Cole slaw.

I like the idea of cheesing it, although one time when I was in Montreal at Schwartz’s I ordered smoked meat sandwich with cheese, and both a local friend and the manager at Schwartz were horrified. I am not eating kosher and there is absolutely no reason that meat cannot be cheesed, kosher laws aside.

No problem with adding Swiss cheese. It will only improve the sandwich if you ask me. As long as you dont overdo the cheese.

What horrifies me is seeing other provinces in Canada or now some place in the US offering Poutine with regular grated cheese. Beurk!!! Awful... A Poutine can only be served with curd cheese and that's it!

Cheers,

In case you did not know by now EB - and for the rest of the locals who probably have no clue - Schwartz's smoked meat was never ever kosher!...so there is nothing wrong with cheesing it!

However, there are places in Montreal that serve kosher smoked meat...you just got to know where to go!

Well the manager at Schwartz’s acted very offended by my request for Swiss cheese on the smoked meat sandwich. I didn’t mean to offend him, but I always order pastrami sandwiches with cheese and WTF, why should smoked meat be any different. He was offended and my local friend was offended and I was kind of shocked that they took offense because it is food and I want my food prepared a certain way. They behaved like the smoked meat is holy.

Schwartz’s should concentrate on their quality of food. A lot of folks that used to frequent this place have told me that the food is not what it used to be and that it has changed for the worse,,, so maybe they should mind their own business ?! ,,, we put whatever strikes our fancy , if I want I put crackers inside
Life is too short to worry about what the Schwartzs manager considers proper smoked meat ,,, tell him to save his advice fir Celine Dion
Anyways I don’t want to be over critical, it’s just that in the old days it was better run and the food tasted much better in my humble opinion

EB, and you should know this...According to Kosher tradition, mixing meat with dairy (cheese) is forbidden. That's why the guy at Schwartz's was offended!

But the guy's reaction was hypocritical since the ownership at Schwartz's changed hands a long time ago and there is not one jewish person that adheres to kosher tradition working there!
