First remain calm as the risk of HIV is low in a situation like that. Call 811 and they will direct you to the appropriate ressource. You can also directly visit an emergency room but be prepared to wait.

First, the risk that the person you had sex with has HIV and that it is transmissible (I.e. untreated) is low. Then, it's fair to say that the condom probably broke towards the end (less contact time raw). Also, female to male transmission is more difficult than the reverse. Still, it is indeed important to take PeP (post-exposure prophylaxis) as you indeed had unprotected intercourse (even if briefly) with an anonymous partner. I'm sure this is available in Québec City. . Let's see what 811 tells you. Basically the pill has to be taken within 72 hours of the event so if you don't get a satisfactory answer, head to an emergency room.

1) https://prelib.com/ or https://cliniquelactuel.com/

2) HIV transmission is actually very difficult to get. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are easier but easily treatable. Syphillis is on the rise and is more problematic but also treatable. So no need to panic.

You are at low risk so just go get tested. Speak to a health care professional and refrain from activities for a while and again....Low risk .Which doesnt mean no risk...There is a rise in infection in Quebec due to people thinking they can now treat HIV and taking less precautions. But it is still a hard disease to get.

It is treatable, but not curable. On peut le traiter, mais pas le guérir. The vast majority of people on treatment acheive an undetectable viral load, which means that they can't even transmit the virus and that they can live a relatively normal life, as long as they keep taking their medication. One particular risky situation is when people have the virus and they're not aware, either because they are in the early stage (acute infection) and/or lack of testing. Hence the importance of frequent testing and of the use of condoms.

HIV can be treated Lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART), it is no longer a death sentence like it used to be. Think of mental illnesses, we can't fully cure them, but we can manage them in a way that can still allow many people to lead fulfilling lives with proper treatment and management strategies. It's like herpes but with much more maintenance and monitoring required if we are going to compare it with another STI.

With proper treatment and medical supervision, HIV-positive individuals can safely have children with HIV-negative partners.

HIV is not comparable to herpes. It's a virus that hijacks and destroys your immune system if left untreated. I wouldn't compare it to any other virus.

100%. I just meant that they are both uncurable, both are viruses, and can be managed with antiviral medication.

yeah, I realize that my initial post comparing them is a shit post. I was merely comparing characteristics and not severity.
LMAO it’s okay, it happens to me so many times. I edit and re - edit my posts when I post on a whim. But this is why community is important! Everyone can enter the chat haha! It’s by having these discussions that people can get informed and educated as well.

That is a good post !! but unfortunatly alot of people doesnt know the side effect of the medication, its not the hiv that kills you the more but its the medication , its not just "tylenols" your taking , and only little years on this can cause kidneys , liver & heart failure. So protection always and if you just "met someone "go get tested both just to be at peace before any encounter <3

The 78% increase in HIV cases in Quebec in 2022, with 917 cases reported (including 422 new diagnoses), needs to be looked at with some context. Most of this rise is due to a backlog in testing after the pandemic and an influx of migrants, not necessarily a spike in new transmissions. The majority of cases are still among men who have sex with men. It’s also worth pointing out that HIV isn’t the easiest virus to catch—it usually requires specific conditions like exposure to someone with a high viral load who isn’t on medication. That said, using protection is still super important. But before we panic about the numbers, we need to understand what’s really behind them. Free access to PrEP, a daily pill that prevents HIV, could make a huge difference here since the cost is still a barrier for many people.
