If he signed the 3 for only two seasons,we could consider a genius but now we see the effect of those multi years contracts.

True. But he wouldn't have been able to sign Gionta & Cammallery for only two seasons. They would have signed with another team. Cammallery either with Toronto or Ottawa. He wanted to sign with his hometown team, the Leafs.....but he wasn't Burke's type of player & he wanted more $$ than Toronto was willing to give him.

Remember Doc, when we were telling "gohabsgo" and a few others on here that those 3 signings would come back to haunt Les Habitants within a year or 2 and beyond? How those 3 players would not only hurt the habs because they did not have the toughness and grit to compete against the bigger teams in the conference and the fact their long term deals would hamper the clubs ability to sign other players that would be needed to help build a contender? And also now these underperforming and "soft" players contracts could very well have an effect on signing Price, Subban and Georges? 3 players that MUST be re-signed, but there might not be enuf $ to sign all three, unless they unload the big contracts spoke of above for low draft picks, thus meaning the team will tank and enter another REBUILD. Yet you and i did not know a thing of what we were talking about, lol... remember that Doc? Well, i hate to say "i told ya so" but.......... anyways, Merry Christmas Everyone!

I agree. But it's funny. I don't know a single habs fan who didn't love those moves when they were made. They were calling Gainey a near-genius back then. Nearly two years later, he's now a bum & maybe the worst GM the habs ever had. Well, well, well.....:nono:

rebuild rebuild that is only way to explore

The problem is.....just like in Toronto.....the Montreal fans & the local media won't allow the team to just 'blow it up' and rebuild entirely. The pressure put upon management to always try to put a winning team on the ice is extreme.

Rebuilding usually means at least five years of ineptitude & winding up in the basement of the standings in order to constantly draft an elite player....a player among the top 3 picks of a draft. This is how the NY Islanders (late 70's), Pittsburgh Penguins (late 80's + present), Tampa Bay & Washington Capitals were able to do it. Of course, winding up at the bottom of the standings doesn't guarantee anything if the wrong people are running a team....take the N.Y. Islanders, for example. GM's like Mike Milbury have traded high draft picks in order to compete right away & got burned for it. At least GM Garth Snow has been a drastic improvement over Milbury and appears to be set on keeping the players he drafts.

As for the Habs.......well, players they've drafted since Carey Price haven't exactly lightened up the scoreboards in their respective hockey rinks. I'm still not positive that Louis Leblanc will amount to anything. A lot of people today say that the Habs missed out on Claude Giroux in the 2006 draft. Many teams did. However, there is no guarantee that Claude Giroux would have become the player he is if he would have been chosen by any other team than the Flyers. What if he would have been drafted by the Habs? Would he have been able to put up with all the pressure of playing in such a market? What if he would have been picked by the Islanders? Just looking at how ordinary John Tavares has been so far, i can't see a player like Giroux thriving with such an organization.

The best thing that ever happened to Claude Giroux was NOT getting picked by the Habs.

As for Tavares it looks like he'll have a decent career but nothing like what was expected - just one more in a long long line of highly-touted youthful phenoms who never quite lived up to expectations once they started playing with the big boys.

I totally agree. I'd be willing to bet that even the player himself may agree.

I agree. However, i'd be curious to see how he would have developped had he been picked by a different club, such as Tampa, etc.

one year without a goal and he still play on a regular line. After waiting one year the Gm will have take a decision soon, now Gomez est la risee de toute la ligue.

True. But the GM's options are limited. He can't trade him since nobody wants a player that can't score, especially if you consider the enormous salary they'd have to pay him. So what do you do? Send him to the minors or to the KHL in order to save the cap money? If so, i doubt the ownership would agree to this since the only reason Randy Cunneyworth & his assistant coaches are in their current position is due to the fact that ownership didn't want to spend money to go & get someone from the outside. You think that it was just a coincidence that one of the assistant coaches has never coached before until the day Jacques Martin got fired?

They went to get someone within the organization who was already being paid & who had a hockey background. Of course, i'm referring to Larry Carriere.

Logically, the only option left is to buy out Gomez' contract. It's more likely that this won't happen & that he'll once again be wearing the 'bleu-blanc-rouge' next season.

A memorable day indeed for Scotty. I hope he's enjoying his anniversary. My guess is that he's currently out celebrating at one of those supper clubs along St-Laurent....Buena Note, Le Globe, etc. The babes are probably lined up for him, as we speak.

Happy anniversary, Scotty! :thumb:
