jimace,
Since you have been through this can you speak a little bit about the issues of pain and pain management? How bad is the pain?
Well, I've been through laser treatment of my upper back (and parts of the front as a trial) after some comparison shopping as I've also had wax treatments by the waxing technican mentioned in the Montreal Mirror link that I provided. She doesn't do any laser treatments by the way (only waxing). I've never had it done on my private parts in either case although one laser place that I've gone to when I was shopping for it specifically mentioned that they don't do "bikini laser" for guys only for women even though I didn't ask.
If you're interested in the pain involved in getting your privates lasered, I have no idea. "C Dick" probably has an idea of this since according to his post, he did this before. I just have a feeling that some (or a lot of) places won't do it for guys considering that all the technicians are females, etc. I can only imagine how it will feel based on getting my upper back lasered (7 treatments and some touch-ups) and my front done (2 treatments just to thin it out).
With laser, I would compare the pain/discomfort during the process as having someone take an elastic band stretching it to as far as it can go without breaking it and then snapping/releasing it onto your skin. Imagine this happening each time the laser hits the hair follicle at the correct stage of growth necessary to kill the hair. This is the pain/discomfort that you will feel during the treatment. Having a lot of hair means feeling this discomfort/pain repeatedly in quick succession while the laser is passed over your body.
With waxing when it is done properly, it is a quick pull so the pain/discomfort is quick. For me, it was not like how "The 40 Year Old Virgin" made it out to be but then again, I don't have a lot of body hair to begin with anyways.
This is why I mentioned in an earlier post that I find waxing (when done properly) to be less painful than laser when the same body part is done both times. The laser technicians would seem to indicate otherwise. Another difference between laser and waxing is that with laser, you have to shave before your appointment. With waxing, you obviously shouldn't shave.
The "after" pain for laser is worst than with waxing. With waxing after a few hours, I didn't feel anything. With laser, the effects for me were felt for a few days (close to a week). I go swimming and cycle/jog which means my skin is exposed to a lot of sweat and chlorine. I don't recommend doing this after laser. My skin turned very red (like an allergic reaction). It was also very painful. Taking a bath or shower after waxing isn't a problem in terms of pain/discomfort. With laser, I don't recommend it for at least a few hours. Even after a day, taking a shower can still be a bit painful (I would compare this type of pain/discomfort to a bad sunburn).
The laser technicians normally recommend taking 2 aspirins or tylenols before showing up. I've taken nothing and 2 aspirins/tylenols (over the counter pain medication) and for me, the pain wasn't that different in either case so I normally don't take anything since I didn't see any benefit.
During my first laser treatment, I actually wasn't prepared for it and had scheduled to see a SP later in the day. This presented some issues. Now I know not to schedule a SP on the same day/week as a laser treatment.
