Does not hide your phone number and only good for call/sms between your own contacts, so not really good for the hobby. I am mistaken? What's app has encryption too.

encrypted, secure communication between users... WhatsApp works just between users as well. WhatsApp and Signal use the same protocol, but Signal is open-source, doesn't store any message meta-data, doesn't store your contact list or back up your message data. Just need to convince more people to use Signal...
