The numbers are expected to climb as law enforcement authorities investigate other incidents that the gunman left in his path, including the torching of homes & cottages. There are now 17 confirmed victims. This is the worse mass shooting in Canadian history and the worse since 1980 when Marc Lepine murdered 14 young women in 1989 in Montreal. I happened to be in the city at the time of that mass murder & my ex was taking classes in a nearby building.

The alleged murderer in the Nova Scotia killings was a denturologist. People who knew him described as a rather nice fellow and were shocked to learn that he's the suspected gunman. We're still very early into the investigation & there is no clear motive. But his ex girlfriend and her current boyfriend are among the victims so we can speculate what was initially behind his motivation to commit these atrocious acts but why did all those other innocent people have to be killed also? His actions seem to have been previously planned since he was dressed in an RCMP uniform & had prevously purchased two vehicles formerly used by the RCMP.

Canada is supposed to have gun control, no? So how did this happen? I remember all the Canadian posters in the American shooting threads who suggested that these shooting incidents were America's punishment for not having gun control. So what is this? Is gun control a waste of time?

EB just look at the numbers of death/hurt per year by pure gun accident/malfunction between the 2 country and you will have your answer.

Jalimon,

Your post reminded me of a kid who accidentally shot himself in the head while playing around with a gun owned by the kid's friend's father. The father, a local private investigator, was sued and the case settled for $1 million:

What many Canadians don't understand is that the civil tort system in the US is used to provide significant money damages in cases like this one. A poorly secured gun can be a very significant liability.

In the case of your Nova Scotia nutcase, it seems like he went ballistic but the question is why was he allowed to have guns.

Gun control is not about preventing such shooting. Gun control does not cure mentally deranged people. So no gun control will not prevent bandits and deranged to own one, although it's not legal.

EB I do not understand your point about the civil system. Who care about receiving 1 million if you lose a kid? Who cares about money in such situation?

The first thing you learn in law school in a 1st year Torts class is that the objective of tort law is to conform behavior to societal norms through the imposition of civil settlements and judgments. These serve as a deterrent on behaviors deemed to be dangerous to society. The answer to your question "who cares?" is the next person who attempts to buy a weapon or insure over its liability, post settlement or judgment. That's the whole point of tort law. It's to shift liability for accidents to those who cause them or could cause them. Beyond that, this settlement led to legislation in Connecticut on securing weapons and civil and criminal liability for failing to do so. Note that only the kid was criminally charged and not the father/gun owner.

You're not in court here, so you don't need to posture. Seatbelts and airbags don't prevent 100% of the injuries in car crashes. Does that mean that they are not worthwhile?

We have consistently had about 1/6 of the gun-related fatalities that the USA has [2 per annum vs. your 12 per annum (per 100K)]. We might even have fewer if it wasn't for the ease of obtaining guns in the US and smuggling them into our country.

These events are much less frequent in Canada and other developed countries then in the USA (but unfortunately it still happens sometimes).

It has nothing to do with the absurdity of owning guns and machines guns likes in the states. Gun control do saves many life every year.

Actually early when President he was for at least some gun control until he met with the NRA and as is often the case changed his mind. Probably because of the huge money support for his campaign. Sadly it is the money power of the NRA to help their gun manufacturers etc that trumps (pun) safety of the citizens.
