As I recall the really good places have about 5 styles of smoked meat, as follows, but none of you guys have commented on it:

"Lean": The lean and less flavourful end. Relatively healthful but dry.
"Medium" and "medium fat": The most popular cuts from the middle of the brisket. Occasionally, a sliced mix of lean and fat meats.
"Old-Fashioned": A cut between Medium and Fatty and often cut a bit thicker.
"Fat": From the fat end of the brisket. Fires the fat taste receptors, but may be an acquired taste.
"Speck": Consists solely of the spiced subcutaneous fat from the whole brisket without meat.

If you aren't being offered all 5 styles then they are dumbing it down too much and they are not true smoked meat purveyors.

I enjoy Le Roi Du Smoked Meatmore, 6705 Saint Hubert Street, Montreal, Quebec H2S 2M6, Canada
http://www.yelp.com/biz/le-roi-du-smoked-meat-montreal-2

It's also 2 blocks away from Abandoned spa.
http://abandonspas.com/coordinates.html

So massage first then a smoked meat sandwich after.

I do miss Ben's for a smoked meat in downtown.

Yeah, I was wondering about Le Roi Du Smoked Meat! Thanks for the FYI, will definitely give it a try next time...maybe not the spa but hey, who knows? hehehe

Thanks for all the tips...the reason I asked about Dunns, was that I remembered the original one and enjoyed going there a lot of times...just looking for the same...thanks

I often went to the one on St-Catherine street back in the 80's and early 90's.

When they re-opened on Metcalfe, i went there a couple of times and it wasn't the same. The smoked meat sandwhich was very average at best (and dry) and the fries way overcooked to my liking. I"ll never go there again.

Back in the late 80's, i'd always stop by Place Alexis Nihon when i'd go downtown shopping. The main reason for going to that mall (which used to be located across the street from the old Montreal Forum) was for lunch at the venue's restaurant. It was called something like Deli 90. I'd always have the smoked meat. I went back maybe 6 or 7 years ago and had the same thing. I can't remember if the restaurant had the same name. If i remember correctly, their smoked meat sandwich and fries were very good. But that was over 25 years ago.

I've never been to the casino, but the smoked meat (carrying the Lester's brand) served at the Bell Centre is quite atrocious.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it 'atrocious', but it's average at best. I watched a hockey game last year from one of the private booths and they served us that smoked meat sandwich. I found it so-so (but i was used to it), while my buddy Iggy absolutely loved it. He even called me in Toronto on the night of the NHL opener in October and started to reminisce about that night in Mtl....he kept on raving about the smoked meat sandwiches he ate at the game!

If the smoked meat sandwich i usually eat at Reubens is a 10, i'd rate the one at the Bell Centre a 6. I'd rate the one at Dunn's a 4.

No one mentionned 'La Belle Province'. I'd also rate it a 6.

roi du smoked meat is not bad. if you have a late night craving and don't feel like going all the way downtown, it does the job. i wouldn't go out of the way for it though unless you're in the neighborhood (either for a massage, living nearby or drinking around)

Guys like I said Schwartz's has the only smokehouse in Montreal so if you get your smoked meat anywhere else it's completely fake and injected with chemicals to mimic the actual process by which authentic smoked meat is made. If you accept substitutes and fakes then maybe you should get blow up dolls rather than escorts for sex. Fake smoked meat can be eaten after the fake sex. Reminds me of the Michael Rapaport character in the Arnold Schwarznegger movie The 6th Day. In this film he is obsessed with sex with holographic escorts which are not real escorts but a mere image of one. If you insist in eating fake smoked meat then you should watch the movie and see what level you can take the fakery to.

Keep it real guys.

Moe's

I sometimes have breakfast at Moe's when i'm at the airport. They used to have a restaurant near the Bell Centre, but it's now a Baton Rouge.

I once had a smoked meat sandwich there, which is supposed to be their specialty. If i remember correctly, i wasn't impressed. It was okay, but not more.

Anyone else try their smoked meat?

Schwartz's is number 1, the rest are cheap imputations.

Agree, but I would go farther and call the rest meat frauds because Schwartz's meat comes from a smokehouse and is not a result of injecting chemicals into the meat. The other purveyors don't have smokehouses and result on mad scientists injecting chemicals into meat to create flavor, much like Dr. Frankenstein used the brains and body parts of dead criminals to create a fake human being that was actually a monster. Although Frankenstein was indeed great as far as monsters go. But still he was not truly a human being. A cheap imitation of a human being.

Why Montreal smoked meat sandwiches are now 'luxuries'

Prices for smoked meats have almost doubled in recent months, all because of the rising cost of brisket.

A smoked meat sandwich at his deli cost just $6.75 at the beginning of the year; today, he has to charge $10.

The reason for the increase: beef prices have risen 30 per cent in recent months. And the price of brisket, the cut of beef that's turned into the smoked meat Montreal is so famous for, has gone up even more.

"That has gone up over 300 per cent," he told CTV Montreal. "We were paying $2.90 to $3.60 per kilo for the raw material and now we're paying just under $10 a kilo."
