I had a visitor in from out of town about a week ago and he asked about Montreal smoked meat. I suggested that we go to the place most famous for its smoked meat, Schwartz. After a 10 min wait we got in and ordered 2 smoked meat sandwiches, 2 fries and 2 sodas total damage $37.00  I couldn't believe that the price had gone up so much. I looked at the bill and they charge $3.15 for a fry and $2.25 for a can of soda. It appears they have taken their lead from the Bell Center. Needless to say I will NEVER go back to this place. Abies in Pointe Claire ( on St Jean ) serves the same smoked meat and the price is far more reasonable. They have re-opened with a more expanded menu and as far as I'm concerned as good as or better than Schwartz

Yes, the queue outside schwartz's was huge. The take out store next door had no line and you could walk right in and order but the prices still seemed a bit high, even with the USD/CAD exchange rate.

Hence why i point out Le Roi Du Smoked Meatmore, 6705 Saint Hubert Street, Montreal, Quebec H2S 2M6, Canada

Also 3 blocks from Abandoned Spa...

No wonder the prices were jacked up: it's owned by Celine Dion and Rene Angelil.

I must admit that the prices you listed are indeed a bit high. I mean, it's just a fucking smoked meat sandwich! Junk food!!! Might as well save some money and go to a food court and eat basically the same crappy greasy junk food instead of paying $37.00 for a couple of smoked meat combos!

p.s. Check out the Montreal Pool Room across the famous Club Cleopatra. Or better yet, Decarie Hotdog.

As mentioned above people are lined up to pay the price. Why would they NOT charge? I'm surprised they don't jack the price! As long as people are prepared to pay it for whatever reason ( hype, value, taste, tradition) they will charge it.

I've been going to Montreal for just under 30 years and believe it or not, i've never been to Schwartz. Nor have i been on top of Mount Royal.

You pretty much need a car if you want to eat a Schwartz smoked meat sandwich since there is always a lineup and there isn't much room inside to sit down and eat. The way i see it, i'd drive there, wait in line, order a couple of smoked meats and get back in my car and eat them at my hotel. Last week was the first time i drove all the way to Mtl since 2006 and i didn't feel like driving all the way there (incl. take my car out of the underground parking garage) just to eat a fucking smoked meat. It's good, but it's also just junk food and a health hazard.

Therefore, my preference has always been to walk a couple of blocks downtown and if i want to eat a good smoked meat sandwich, my preference is to eat at Reuben's Deli (the one near Stanley, on Ste-Catherine). I find it's tasty, they ask you if your preference is lean, medium or regular....and it fills the spot. Again, it's a smoked meat sandwich....not filet mignon. No use going out of my way just to eat one which will also end up likely costing more. Plus i can't stand waiting in line outside. Bad back, low patience level.

Well, I recall when I was working downtown many years ago and was going to the famous BEN supposedly reknowned for their smoked meat but I found it really ordinary.
Actually, I found the smoked meat plate at GreenSpot better. I have not gone to greenspot since many years. I wonder if they still exist and if they still have their vintage little jukebox at each table.

Personally, I find smoked meat at La Belle Province really good.

But these days, I go at Patate Rouge in Ahuntsic for a great smoked meat plate and the best french fries in town: http://pataterouge.ca/

For best burgers, I love Five Guys but it's pricey.

For best hot dogs, I go at Costco, I take the Polish Sausage (Sometime the regular). Their hot dog is Real BIG (quarter pound) and Soda drink is included at only 1.50 $ +tax (1,75). Unbeatable.
I read somewhere that this price has not changed in 28+ years...

And for chicken, Benny's and Côte St-Luc BBQ. But again, for chicken that taste the best, it is Costco Rotisserie Chicken. Amazing taste and again, cheap.

I concur... Georges on St-Martin (Laval)... As I live in West-Island, I like Abies... medium with a beer... I have been to Schwartz in ages, but the no-beer... it is a show-stopper for me !!!
Hey what a coincidence....I also live in the West Island and enjoy Abie`s

While there was no line outside of schwartz's, I went back to try le Main across from Schwartz's. It was a nice day so I sat outside on their sidewalk deck. Service was great & friendly and the menu was extensive. I order the Matzo Ball soup and the smoked meat sandwich special which came with cole slaw, fries, a pickle and a beverage. Everything was very good and their menu options are also excellent. I'd suggest giving it a try if you are in the area.

I just learned recently that a lot of people like their smoked meat like cold cuts rather than thick slices and straight out of the smoker.

I think it's blasphemy

Smoked meat is all the same in supermarkets and restaurants. They all use injection brining. Many years ago, my brother got a job at this meat packing place on Maison St. His job was to open boxes of beef brisket from Alberta. The people would remove the excess fats, tenderized the meat, inject the meat with salt and chemicals and then smoked the meat. Overnight, you have smoked meat!! My brother job was to ship out the smoked meat to supermarkets and restaurants. To his great surprise, one of the restaurants who was ordering the smoked meat was the famous Schwartz restaurant! So there is no difference between the smoked meat you buy in Provigo and Schwartz restaurant.

Read this article in the Toronto Star about Caplansky restaurant in Toronto. He admits that nobody use dry bringing and everybody use injection brining.
