Many world records just keep getting beat every year, but some records are just never going to fall because of technology changing - and not necessarily because earlier record-holders are better.
The final expisode of M*A*S*H* garnered a huge audience. One that will now never be beat - not because it was the greatest show ever - but because now everyone has hundreds of channels to choose from and the audience is fragmented.
The CN Tower was and still is the tallest freestanding structure in the world. It seemed like only a matter of time before someone would build a higher tower, but now that communications rely on satellites instead of transmitters on tall structures, it seems unlikely anyone can ever justify building another such structure if there is no practical purpose other than beating a record.
A Diamond Award for selling X Million albums hasn't been awarded in a few years. With free downloading CD sales may never again reach those levels even though the music is (arguably) just as good.
