SPEEDOS, TRUNKS (BOARD SHORT) OR SUNGAS?
Finally, summertime is here. Blue sky, hot weather, blazing sun, cool drinks and swimming: things and activities that typically belong to summer time. I’m fortunate enough to be able to spend this time of the year away from my dusty and topsy-turvy office because I can work on my lectures and papers in my house. The implacable law of publish or perish…Even if you’re on vacation, you have always to work on something, to come up with something new.
This morning when I saw the sun in the sky, I said to myself: «No work today, I’ll spend the day beside the pool with a good book». Still in my pyjamas, I said to myself that I should look for more convenient apparel if I want to spend the day outside in my backyard. Rummaging through my drawers, I came across different type of beach wears beseeching me to take them outside in order that they can escape from their dark and gloomy confinement: Speedos, Rip Curl and Billabong board shorts, Vilebrequin green cabana «Moorea» swim trunk, a couple of sungas and…an old pair of cut-off jeans.
As I was alone in my backyard and my intention was to sunbathe, I didn’t hesitate to wear either a speedo or a sunga. I realize – to my great dismay – that speedos are almost spurned by all in North America. Why is it so? Or is it simply, once again, North American prudishness?
Finally I ended up wearing a sunga. I think it’s the ideal beach wear if you intent to sunbathe. They are more comfortable than speedos and have a different shape (but they are very short bathing suits). Naturally, I wouldn’t surf with them. Unfortunately this type of bathing suit is still uncommon in North America. Would your wear a sunga? Would you still wear them if you have a few extra pounds?
