Mine is, despite being a liberal, I've gotta side with the jesus freaks on this one. Adults make living wills if they wanted their wishes known. He husband lives with another woman, has a child with another woman, and thus would be divorced if Terri could do that. Her husband should lose any input on this becuase he's been cheating on his wife. Plus have feeding tubes removed and dying over a period of a week or two is really damn cruel. you'd at least shoot a horse in the head. Moral: make a living will.

Dying in dignity is a right

I've been following the Shiavo case for a while. It is a very sad story.

Several judges have recognized that Terri Schiavo had clearly expressed she didn't want to be kept alive artificially. She's only alive because Jeb Bush adopted a special law for her case, and that law has been struck down.

I've also visited her parents' website. It is very disturbing to see what they believe to be signs of life... Obviously the woman is close to brain dead, with only very primitive reflex functions. On top of it, the parents have sunk to incredible lows by accusing the husband of being a wife batterer or even a murderer...

This sad story is only still going on because it is supported morally (and probaby financially) some extreme right wingers.

In a rational perspective, keeping Terri Schiavo alive is a waste of ressources AND goes against what she told her own friends. Every public dollar spent on her is a dollar the state won't spend on helping underfed teenage mothers or on aids/heart attacks/cancer research.

Let's keep in mind that the woman has been brain dead for 15 years now... Are we really asking her husband to be a "grieving widower" for 15 years? She would have been dead 10 years ago if her parents had accepted reality.

I agree with you, a living will is the way to go.

I don't think any of that evidence is particularly good, it would be hearsay anyways because she's not techincally a party, so it wouldn't be an admission. Don't forget, her husband has financial interest in this, he's living with another woman, has had a child with that woman. her parents want her alive, her husband is cheating on her, I think one should side with the parents on this. If she really felt this way, and I'm sure the statements are false, she would have made a living will. Costs $75, along with having your will made.

Pulling her feeding tubes is incredibly cruel. If they're going to kill her, they might as well give her lethal injection, but wait, that would be murder. So if she's dead, can they really kill her? For someone who is "brain dead" she sure moves and smiles a lot.

Living will.

Edit: I also don't trust scientists too much these days. Remember the recent article that came out that "lobsters feel no pain when they're boiled"?? H ave you EVER heard the sounds that a lobster makes when it's boiled? IT's terrible! They surely feel pain, are those screams of joy? It's being boiled alive and is going through hell!

Maybe you can give a link to the article you are referring to. As for lobsters being dropped in boiling water, it is the oxygen escaping from beneath their carapace. From empirical observation, I've chopped off the claws and tails off of lobsters and they didn't make a sound.

I've heard them scream in agony. Come on, it's common sense, and people are trying to feel better about themselves. I'm sure they'll come out and say that boiling chickens alive doesn't cause pain either for the chicken. Whatever makes someone sleep better at night. Come on, it's being BOILED alive.

Yeah, I don't get it when they say brain dead here. Basically under that definition, every other form of life on earth would be considered "brain dead". Yes, she's not going to be writing any disserations ever again, but to say her brain isn't working other than keeping her organs working, is an outright lie, made to make people be able to sleep better at night.

Having worked in hospitals for decades, i've encountered numerous patients such as Terri Schiavo. Let me tell you, the first times that i've come face-to-face with patients in her situation, i must admit that it was pretty damn depressing. No quality of life, no chances of improvement, unproductive, confined for the rest of your life to a bed, and probably brain-dead or near-brain dead. I realized back then that animals are better treated in our society than human beings are. When an animal is in this type of situation, there are humanitarian ways to end their misery. For human beings, this is not tolerated in North American society. However, it is quite common in a country such as Holland.

Have you noticed that the video clips of Terri Schiavo are from several years ago?? Why aren't we shown recent video clips? The reason: her situation has deteriorated considerably since then.

Call it mercy killing or whatever, but i personally wouldn't be able to live with myself if a loved one would wind up in the same situation as hers.

Anyone see "Million Dollar Baby" recently?

Can't hand someone a gun like that, that would be assisted suicide.. But people aren't viewing it from her perspective now, only from what they think in a normal state. If anything, Terri Schiavo is probably the only non miserable human on earth right now. She's oblivious to the world, that would be great. The only person not going through this trauma is her, it sucks for the "living".. But if you're not aware, how bad could it be??

I think history will view starving her to death as incredibly cruel... If Michael Shiavo really "cared" for her, beyond the obvious cheating on her, then he would risk jail to overdose her with morphine...

From what I've read, she at this point has no brain, no central cortex. There is just a bunch of liquid matter where her brain used to be.

Her facial expressions, according to the nerve experts, are reflex actions. There is nothing going on there. The eyes occasionally move randomly around the room, the eyes open and close reflexively, but there is no thought, no pain, no reaction. It's a horrible state of affairs; her parents wanting her to be kept alive is about them, not about her.

Her husband started seeing other people, apparantly at the urging of Terri's parents, long after she was declared a hopeless case.

He moved on, so he shouldn't have the life or death say. If she's truly gone, then she's not suffering... If the parents want to deal with her, then let them. As I said previously, the only person not suffering from this is Terri...

From what I understand, he is by her bedside every day.

The other people who are suffering from this are the taxpayers who have spent millions and millions of dollars that could have gone to help the many other people in need with the chance for a better life. That chance passed for Terri many years ago. It is long since time for her to rest in peace. Her parents have stood in the way of that rest for years.

If that's true, then his current gf must think he's psycho. Imagine going out witha girl who constantly talked about, thought about his ex girlfriend??

I think a lot of the litigation funds for the parents has come from right to life groups... Mike Schaivo was paying for his costs out of the trust fund, and these fees cover court costs..

That it's been going on so long I say err on the side of caution and give custody to the parents.... History will view this as incredibly cruel, either that or they will legalize physician assisted suicide, but in her case, it will never be that. since she cannot participate, they'll have to make a mercy killing law... I still don't like the idea of euthanasia though. They'll start killing off people, downs syndrome, euthanizing babies because of birth defects...

Without a living will then she should be kept alive regardless of what someone says the other person wanted. If the husband has already started a family with someone else then he has moved on and should have no more say in the matter.

Just what we need, the government and judges deciding who lives and who dies. A pretty sad day if you ask me. :(

I agree 100%, unfortunately litigation isn't about truth, only what is likely to be truth.. In thise case, they should have used a higher standard than clear and convincing evidence.... At least it wasn't the preponderance standard... But still, life and death with something less than beyond a reasonable doubt.... That's scary..

What is scary? Lets celebrate and respect the humanity, and in this particular case yes, definetly this is not euthanasia (which should be applied for her own good0 hownver i agree with the idea if Mr.Husband would be so desperate he should risk to overdose morphine or any other tranquiliser to end hers sufffering

Its rare that I would side with George Bush, but I agreed when he said "We should err on the side of life". Other than that, I've got 2 problems with how things are going. First, is the husband has gone on and lived his life, got another woman and started a family as well is his right, BUT, I think it takes alot away from his credibility. If he divorced Teri he gets nothing, but when she finally dies, does he get some insurance money? We cannot be sure She really told him her wishes or not, and his situation makes me think he might have another motive than her welfare. The other problem is, the way they are killing her. If this were a merciful death, just give her a shot of poison and let her die immediately. Concious or not, she is being TORTURED TO DEATH with this slow dehydration/starvation.

1. Mike Schiavo did not start seeing other women until he was encouraged to do so by his wife's parents.

2. Terry Schiavo is not being tortured to death. She has no feelings. She can feel nothing. The part of her brain that was once capable of feeling pain is long gone.

Please show us the article that states that her parents encouraged him to move on. You seem so focused on this statement that I am sure you have proof?

The only people who suggest that this woman is not a total vegetable are a couple of physicians wheeled into the scene by the religious right. Every self-respecting neurosurgeon who has viewed her brain scans has concluded that her brain no longer exists. There is nothing but water between the ears.

On this side of the border, the polls are consistent. Over 80% of the populace, including a majority of evangelical Christians, believe it is time to let Terry Schiavo rest in peace. Those who believe she should be kept alive have been reduced to her parents, Randall Terry, the Bush brothers, and only the most hardcore of the anti-abortion crowd.

So you make a claim that I am 'hardcore anti-abortion'? You don't even know me. Watch it before making a generalized statement like that. I didn;t know I voted you supreme ruler....

Give Terri The Benefit Of Doubt, Live And Let live Please!

This is obvious a very tragic case. I vote for giving Terry the benefit of the doubt and keep her alive. Why?

First, the sanctity of life must be celebrated and honored especially on a weak and defenseless person such as Terri Schiavo. Without life, nothing matters.

Second, for those who wanted to pull the plug from Terri, let me ask how do you know Terri does not have a mind of her own which is capable of thinking and emotions despite of her apparent inability to communicate with us? How do you know she is not thinking now how much she is suffering from this incredible cruel and unusual punishment of being starved to death? How do you know that Terri is not silently crying out for help within her deteriorated body?

We wasted billions of dollars fighting some unjustifiable war in Iraq. How much it costs to keep Terri alive? Can you in good conscience tell me that Terri really wants to die this way?
